I recorded this over the holidays and decided to upload it as a bonus video this week. I will have another real time tutorial ready for Friday :)

Just an FYI: The FC graphite aquarelle pencils also come in a tin instead of a blister pack but without a brush if you were interested in that set instead.

I recognize that you reviewed the Derwent WSG pencils with wood, not the woodless ones, so these comments may not be totally relevant. I have the Derwent woodless water soluble graphite pencils set of 3 which I don't use for a number of reasons. There is little variation between the light, medium and dark pencils. The pencils don't sharpen to an exact point, so I can only get thick lines from them, not the fine lines I prefer for my style of detailed work. I find it extremely difficult to control the shape of the drawing once water is applied because the graphite bleeds beyond the area it's applied to. It dries quickly and when dry, it can no longer be moved around. You cannot lift it and you cannot erase it, therefore, the only way to correct a drawing is to keep applying more and more graphite, hoping you can get it to work. It usually doesn't. Additionally, I keep breaking the pencils when I apply a slight bit of pressure, so I now have a bunch of small hard to use pencil pieces. This is one of those are supply purchases I regret.
On the other hand, I totally love the FC WSG pencils. I usually work on Bristol paper. I have much more control over the line quality because these pencils can be sharpened to an exact point. The graphite applies in a predictable way with clear definition between the various hardnesses. They react with water in a consistent and controllable way. Because FC WSG is not permanent when dry, it's easy to move the graphite around to achieve the exact shade desired, or you can lift it if you find you applied too much. Although not completely erasable after water has been applied, you can lighten areas with a standard eraser. I don't have issues with FC WSG bleeding beyond the edges of my drawing. Additionally, I really love combining them with watercolor and colored pencils to add a bit of subtle color to my drawings. The only drawback I find is that because these can be reactivated, they do interact with watercolor and cause the wc to gray out a bit.
In my opinion there's no comparison. FC makes the best product - hands down.

Love the quick comparison. I only have that faber castell set. I think they’re pretty cool, they definitely stay true to the grade. Water soluble graphite is an interesting concept, I’m curious to see if you create an entire piece with the faber castells. I’ve contemplated trying some derwent colored pencils, but it’s confusing because they offer so many different lines😂

I originally wanted then to sketch under my watercolor painting (but I keep forgetting to use them lol) but I may have to do a small piece with them to see how I like them. Maybe it will ease me into using graphite 😃

@@NaomiCoutureArt I think that's a good plan. Some of the darker grades from FC might smear too much into the other colors of a watercolor painting, but the lighter grades would probably work for that. you'll have to let us know how it goes!

I think I’ll have to test them out as you say. If it turns out good I’ll even make it into a tutorial 😃

Nice video! Keep up the good work! I have the faber castell’s they are very nice! If you use them on wet paper they get very dark wich is interesting.. a thing to note though; you cant erase them, the hb a little bit but the rest won’t come off.. even before adding water.

Oh that’s interesting. I hadn’t tried erasing them but that’s really good to know if I’m using them for sketch. Thanks! 😃

O I wish I had seen this before , I just received my Derwent the other day , I think I had checked Derwent was 18$ and $ Faber 30.00 CAD, that is why I choose Derwent . CAD Amazon prices for ART supplies are many times over priced! I just checked the Canson XL watercolor 9x12 it is 17.14 and at Des Serres local Arts store it is 9.99 $ many many things likes single pencils , pan pastels much more then local store . I have discovered Wyndham art supplies from Ontario, I ordered from them onces pan pastels and single pens 10 $ delivery in 2 days ,but much lower price than Amazon . So we need to check thing carefully! Anyway Thank you so much for this video!

I do agree that things can be over priced on Amazon! Normally if I’m looking at something I add it to my wish list and just keep checking to see when it goes on sale lol. I also get a lot of my supplies from Delta Art even though I’m in the maritimes. I got my luminance set of pencils from Des Serres as they were on sale for 50% off! I really like the faber castel ones as they blend out smoother and actually have a gradient within the colors. I think I got them for about 15-20 on Amazon so keep checking 😃

Thank you! I'm just testing the Faber-Castell Graphite Aquarelle, but I was curious about the performance and range of graduations of the Derwent watercolor pencils. Have a nice day Naomic Art.
P.S. There is a presentation in a metal case of the Faber Aquarelle. It contains the 5 graduations, but not the brush.

I'm glad this was useful to you! I have to say I think I prefer the Faber Castell Aquarelle over the Derwent ones. They blend out so smoothly and there is a clear gradation between them. Also I didn't know they came in a tin, so that's a bonus too :)
