    Question of the Day: Have you ever experienced a natural disaster?
    My answer: From these nine examples of natural disasters I have only ever experienced earthquakes. I lived in Japan teaching English from 2009 - 2013 and there were quite a few minor earthquakes during that time. The huge earthquake in March 2011 (magnitude 9.1) was very scary, but luckily the area where I was living was about 270km away and is a completely landlocked prefecture so there was no danger of a tsunami. There were rotating power outages for several weeks, but the Japanese government did a good job of scheduling the power outages and providing the essential information to everyone, including translating it into English for foreigners living in the affected areas. The aftershocks were also rather frightening, but I am so grateful that both my friends in Japan and I were all safe following the disaster. How about you?

      There are quite a lot of Earthquakes in California because it lies on the San Andreas Fault. In English faults are areas where two tectonic plates come together. I didn't mention the word fault in the video, but it is also a good word connected to earthquakes.
      You're absolutely right that earthquake is a compound noun, good job! And tsunami is an example of a loanword from Japanese. It actually means 'harbour wave' rather than tidal wave, and tidal waves are actually not the same as tsunamis. In Japanese 津 means harbour or port, and 波 means wave.

    Thank you for your excellent 授業. I've never experienced these natural disasters luckily. I was not affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake directly. I lived in a place where the seismic intensity was about 4.
    But Japan in which natural disasters occurred anywhere every year, that's why I think I'm going to experience a natural disaster someday.
    I took an hour to write this sentences. Writing is so hard.

I am glad to hear that you haven't really experienced any natural disasters, other than earthquakes. I am also glad to hear that you weren't affected by the huge earthquake back in 2011. Although Japan has a lot of earthquakes, I feel like the buildings are built strong and that Japanese people are even stronger😉. Take care ✨.

    The common natural disasters in Iran are earthquakes, drought, flood, and I experience earthquakes three times in my life, there were horrifying, especially after an earthquake you don't know whether the earthquake was the main earthquake or the main earthquake is on the way. 😳
    Homes and apartments build strong enough for small earthquakes but a big earthquake in the capital Tehran cloud destroys the entire city and cause many deaths, new homes and apartments can resist floods and strong winds because their structures are built using reinforced cement or steel, I'm wondering in the USA, and Canada some of the homes still build using wood which is vulnerable to wind and fire. 😑

    I live in the city called Kryvyi Rih which is in Ukraine. And I've seen a disaster once. It was on the 2nd of July, 2019. Then we saw the real tornado. It was so horrible I just have no words to describe it. I saw how the trees were falling and destroying the fences and the roofs of the neighboring houses. I was afraid that some of those trees would get in our windows and destroy them, but, thanks God, it didn't happen. That tornado also destroyed electric cables, so we had been lost electricity for almost three days.

    Jen! Thanks a lot. I am very impressed by this lesson. For me, you are awesome teacher. I could extend my vocab to prepare for IESTS. I still need your help to improve my learning process. I had earthquake experience. Please correct grammatical error if I made in writing sentences here.

    • @JeNsJyugyou
      @JeNsJyugyou  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your nice comment. ☺️ I appreciate your compliments.
      I will rewrite your sentences with minor corrections:
      "For me, you are an awesome teacher. I could expand my vocab to prepare for IELTS. I still need your help to improve my learning process. I have experienced an earthquake. Please correct any grammatical errors if I made them in writing sentences here."
      It sounds even more natural if the last sentence is "If I made any grammar errors in my writing, please correct them."
      As you can see, there were very few mistakes in your sentences. 👍🏻 You should try to be careful of articles (a, an, the) and plural vs singular nouns with quantifiers, but overall great sentences. 🙂

    Jen, a magnificent lesson that you teach, not only with a super outstanding English vocabulary, but also how these natural phenomena develop, properly called natural disasters. It is a very didactic lesson in both ways, in the English that you teach and how well you explain the way they crop up in nature. I`ll watch this video several times. I, thank God, never found myself in a disaster, but I was in a place of Thailand where a terrible Tsunami occurred a few days after I had been there. In Madrid, very long ago, I remember the condominium where I lived, move due to a tremor. You are an impressive teacher full of wisdom. Always looking forward for your next one.🌹👍✨

      Thanks Santiago, your comment really brightened my day and has encouraged me greatly. I really appreciate your kindness and am inspired by your message. ❤️
      I am extremely glad to hear that you have never experienced a natural disaster, and that you were able to avoid both a tsunami and an earthquake. If the condo that you used to live in actually moved, that must have been a rather high magnitude earthquake!

    • @santiepful
      @santiepful 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JeNsJyugyou In the building we just noticed the lamps swinging. That happened in others buildings in the city as well, but not more than that.😉But in some village in the south part of the country there was an earthquake that caused the breakdown of some buildings a few years ago. Has it happened some kind of earthquake in Canada?🍁

    • @JeNsJyugyou
      @JeNsJyugyou  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@santiepful That is a good question. Canada doesn't usually suffer from earthquakes, but I know that they sometimes experience mild tremors out in the west coast (like in BC). To my knowledge, I think I learned in school that Canada had a it's biggest earthquake in the 1930's, but the area where it happened is up north and very remote so I don't believe it caused any damage. Out of all the natural disasters on this list I think landslides / snow slides are the most common. When I was in elementary school though, in addition to fire drills we also had tornado drills.

    I discovered your channel 3 days ago and i loved your videos so much! Thank you for your effort! ❤️ I have a question. İs writing these words or phrasal verbs important while we are studying English or is watching enough? Sometimes i feel so tired when i try to write everything that i ‘ve learned.

    • @JeNsJyugyou
      @JeNsJyugyou  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Merve ☺️ Thanks for you kind comment. I am so happy to hear that you enjoy my lessons. 🙂
      As for your question, writing things down is a good way to be able to review them again later. However, in terms of actually learning by writing it depends on your learning style. I personally think that writing what you learn is the best way to study, but there are three main ways that people learn, and many people have a learning style that is a combination of more than one way.
      1. Visual: by seeing something it helps them to remember new information.
      2. Audio: some people can only learn by hearing new information.
      3. Tactile: some people learn best of physically doing something to help then remember new information. Some people write, some draw, some speak / repeat, some create movements that will help them to recall the information later.
      By writing you are using both visual (because you see what you wrote) and tactile (you're physically doing the writing). Due to the fact that writing down what you learn uses 2/3 learning styles, most people (including me) find it an effective way to study. However, if you're more of an audio learner, then it may not be as effective for you. If taking notes isn't working for you, try experimenting with other ways of learning / remembering and find what works best for you.
      *It is also important to remember though, that whichever style of learner you are, the only way to truly learn something is to practice what you've learned! 😉
      Sorry for the long response, but I hope this will help you. 🙂

    Hey Jen.
    Thankfully here in Brazil we don't have the most devastanting ones of these natural disasters. I only can wonder how disconcerting and unstable is to live in some place where one or more of these are real threats.
    Here we have basically two, that cause a lot of damage, though. The floods and the landside. When they happen, the situation gets pretty ugly, and more than once we've been on international media because of it.
    Thanks for the lesson.

      Hi Matheus, I am glad to hear that in Brazil you are safe from the majority of these natural disasters.(I thought Brazil suffered from hurricanes, but I guess I was wrong.) Canada is usually pretty safe as well, but surprising this week there was a small tornado in my province! It only caused minor damage though and no on was injured. Anyways, I hope you're continuing to stay safe and healthy. 🌸

    • @JeNsJyugyou
      @JeNsJyugyou  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha😆! I was kind of young at the time so I only vaguely remember that, but I do think it was ridiculous. There was only about a metre of snow that had accumulated over a few days! I didn't include blizzard in the video because compared to the other disasters, they don't cause that much destruction, they're more of an inconvenience. ❄️
      Also, when I think of Mel Lastman now I can only picture him yelling "Nobody" trying to sell furniture. 😅
