I worked in several luxury stores, I wanted to say all the stores I worked it emphasized that we have to wait on everybody, no one was judged the way they were dressed, that’s a thing of the past, a lot of our clients came in their running outfits, they never dressed up, we were there to build a clientele, we had client books and we called our clients, a lot of them did not come into the store, we shipped everything out to them, I put so much attention to someone that was younger and they were not big spenders, once they made it they were loyal to you. That was yrs ago when a lot women worked in retail to buy outfits, and certainly they would look at you and think he can’t afford this.
So true. I still remember the stores/brand that were snobby towards me when I was younger/a teenager. It’s not like I hold a grudge really but I am just not really drawn to them for that exact reason.
A few years back I participated in a Louis Vuitton focus group. I felt nervous because I wasn’t a VIP, but the interviewer was really nice and I didn’t feel judged because I didn’t buy 10k a year and normally purchased online. LV sent me a full sized bottle of perfume as a gift and assigned me a CA. The next time I went to a store, I was treated very well, had a full tour of the store, wasn’t rushed and it was a truly awesome experience. My aunt was with me and she was blown away by the luxury experience.
This is such an insightful video, Autumn, thank you for it. I’ve only received poor service in one luxury boutique. I’ve shopped all over the globe, but this happened here in the U.S. It was the Hermes store on Madison Ave in NYC. I’ll never forget it. It was my first time going into Hermes and I was looking for a particular item (not a bag) and the SA was rude, condescending and dismissive. Anyway, after feeling uncomfortable and “less than”, I left. After my husband came back to the hotel from a day of meetings, I told him what had happened. The next day, as a surprise, he went into the same store, saw the same SA and purchased the item. I returned it that afternoon. Looking at it (jewelry) brought back all the bad feelings that I had during my experience at the shop. Now, I know that it was one SA, and perhaps she was having a bad day, but I continue to hold a grudge. They lost what could have been an excellent customer and I will not support them. I know they don’t care, but I do. Honestly, retailers should view every customer and interaction as valuable and treat human beings with respect. No one should feel judged, period.
So we just returned from Paris, France on Feb 28th. I wanted to make a trip to the flagship Dior store but , frankly, wasn’t comfortable going’s until our last day. We had such an amazing experience! Our SA was incredible. I asked for the leather embroidery lady Dior bags and the printed leather lady Dior and we’re brought all sorts of bags from the back that weren’t on shelves or the website yet. There were so many great options that I left with two and it was at this point, we were offered drinks of our choice. Hubby chose champagne. A couple of twilly’s for the handles and onto the shoes led to a bevy of SA’s coming up to offer us limited edition perfume bottles, jewelry, items exclusive to the PARIS flagship store -it felt like a movie. The entire experience was spectacular and the museum is a must for any lover of fashion. We were even offered a booking in the Dior suite that apparently is within the building, but unfortunately we’re flying out the next morning.-ended up drinking 4 flutes of champagne each (oops!). Highly recommend! I’ve had worse treatment at the Columbus ohio Louis Vuitton store.
Dior really does treat their clients well. Glad you had a great experience. I’m from ohio lol live 45 minutes from that LV store . Too many negative experiences there to count. Agreed
“Screamy shouty bags” now added to my vocabulary 😂 love your video!! Purchasing brands no matter how expensive or inexpensive is all about preference. My family thinks I’m crazy for buying “expensive” bags but it’s something I have a passion for. There are certain things I see people Spending money on that I think it’s wasteful. But luckily we’re all allowed to be different 😊
Yes , aren’t we evolved past the days of stereotyping : sexuality ,race , gender , class , weight , age anyway … we should all be evolved past that narrow minded way of thinking . ❤ I got called a snob at work and it felt pretty bad , but when I asked why she said because of the way I dress and carry myself and that was so mean 😪 … I’m anything but a snob( we’ll maybe a bag snob 😂) .
So many misconceptions! My first visit to an LV store was not pleasant. However looking back the store was extremely busy that day. Every subsequent visit has brought me excellent service (all Hawaii shops), including a recent visit to request a repair on a strap. LV canvas is durable and good for every day use. I’ve loaded up a vintage Neverfull GM with heavy items, like multiple pieces of pottery (being transported for sale). A bag shaper on the bottom helped keep everything stacked and in order but no issues noted after carrying that heavy load. I am a Coach fan too and to me Coach is just as recognizable including the non monogram items. Both the style and the beautiful brass hardware are giveaways. Also assuming customers are buying status is not accurate. Some may be but others may just like the item and don’t care what anyone else thinks about it. I’m in the latter group and will also say Damier Ebene is a very elegant bag. LV monogram is too especially when the trim is not vachetta, which feels more casual than black leather trim, IMO. No one should judge someone for carrying a luxury bag. It’s just as bad as judging one for carrying a non-luxury bag.
I have to agree. The older I get the more I realize that nobody has ever been thinking about me. Secondly judging someone or thinking yourself superior to someone is fundamentally low brow so pay no mind to anyone doing it. xoxo
Interesting discussion. Personal style is just that…personal and we all approach it differently. The goal is to buy and wear what makes you feel and look good and aligns with your personality. I don’t wear red lipstick but I love to see it on others. Only you can represent you. Thanks Autumn for you unique and thoughtful perspective. I enjoy your content. 😊
Another lady and I walked in a luxury store at the same time. I was immediately waited on she was not which was surprising because she was carrying they're brand my bag was from Target and I realize It was all about the look and how you carry yourself and if you fit the part they assume. SAD BUT TRUE
Lv Portland is the best! They are so kind, they let my son whom is 8 try on man bags while I was looking and purchasing. They even have him and I perfume and cologne. Love that store
Full disclosure, I am a recent former Louis Vuitton Client Advisor. And, I will just say, sales people are actually not hiding bags they want in the back, it's just that many entry level customers, just so happen to only be interested in the cheapest bags, and corporate, will expressly limit production of certain items which they feel are over saturated. Secondly, Client Advisors basically get nearly no commission from Canvas Bags/Wallets. The company has incentivized pushing higher end/quality leather versions, as well as the classic hard sided luggage. LV is not interested in catering to only entry level key pouch and nano speedy customers. They want to continue to attract more elite shoppers, and do this by limiting production of certain lower price items, and focusing on their VIC's. (very important clients).
I agree! They don't want to be the "gateway" luxury company anymore. Chanel has also raised their prices so much that you can buy a "basic" Birkin for the same price as a large flap bag. Corporate greed is rampant and these companies have seen revenues rise by as much as 30% since the beginning of the Pandemic, much of which has been fueled by price increases, not by an increase in sales. And, the rich keep getting richer...
Omg!!! I can relate so much with your video. When i was a kid my parents struggled sosososo much!!! My sister and I shared clothes. Now as a adult and married, we work hard for what we have. We are not rich. We save yearly for vacations. I had the privilege to go to Europe and that was my first time ever in a LV store and they treated me sosos good. i felt scared at first and intimidating before entering, but it's true it was all in my head!!!!!! They treated me amazing and days after the associate emailed me, saying it was a pleasure meeting me... i hope that if i ever have a second chance to go in a LV again here in the USA they treat me same!!!!....thank you....
Hey there, Autumn. Your commenter and you both have made excellent points about branding and perception. My nephew is a big lover and consumer of Nike sneakers and he also likes Gucci belts, LV and other name brands. I remember him a couple years ago getting depressed because some of his friends and acquaintances seem to be doing better financially than him. He lived in Atlanta, GA and although it was very expensive than his hometown, he felt he had to stay there. Eventually he decided to move back home because his daughter was growing up fast and he felt like he was missing out. I’m being long-winded, but my point is that he stopped worrying about his friends/acquaintances (for all he knew, they could have been in major debt. He still loves Nike, LV, Gucci etc but he works hard to afford those things because of him and not keeping up with the Joneses. I started watching luxury channels because I was doing research for a character I write about who starts seeing someone who’s wealthy. I wanted to learn about high end luxury and now I’m hooked, lol. I can’t afford most of these brands but I sometimes feel some of what your commenter spoke about. I know that you are right that we shouldn’t care about what other people (strangers) think of us. It’s a struggle. Thank you for addressing this issue and sharing a video on it. I’m sure it will put some of your subscribers at ease, fingers crossed.
I have been into LV many times, always buying smaller items only. I have always been treated courteously. The mini-pochette is notoriously hard to get and once when the boutique here had only one, they sold it to me. They could surely have kept it for one of the big spenders! But I don't blame them if they keep items for big spenders. I would do the same thing given that the SAs income relies on commissions. I also like LV coated canvas. It is stunning. I agree, that they don't care who gives them the money. They just want our cash! Thank you for the video! Great ideas!
I like the points you touched in this video. And I agree with most people that sometimes a snobby or rude employee can leave a bad impression on the brand. Something similar happened to me. I really wanted to buy a chanel card wallet. So I found a higher end department store that had smaller shops of the brands inside. So they had a chanel, ysl,and Prada. They also had other handbags. Anyways I knew what I wanted and went straight to the chanel booth, which was small and they had a few items to look at. The employee didn't even acknowledge me and my friend when we walked in, no hello, or a welcome, or how can I help. So my friend and I were browsing and couldn't find we're the wallets were, so I saw a case and there was maybe 2 but no card wallets. So I said to the man, "hello, are these all the wallets that you have?" He didn't even look at me and said a short yes as if I was bothering him. So I asked do you know if your getting any card wallets or were I could find one? He replied with a no, and walked away. I was so disappointed and upset I went to browse around the other brands which the employees were very friendly. Then we were looking at there other handbags and the lady in the makeup booth asked if we needed help. I told her our encounter with the man and she said oh yeah, he's like that with everyone. And went above and beyond to get me the chanel manager who was awesome! She informed me of there inventory, she got my number and said she would message me as soon as one came in. Sure enough a week later I get a text message from her saying they had one come in, and that she could hold it for me!!! I finally got my wallet!!! I didn't allow this one person from stopping me from obtaining something that not only did I want but that I knew I could afford. And the manager was the total opposite of what he was. So I understand for those that won't go back. Lucky for me they were able to make my bad experience into a good one.
Very interesting conversation Autumn. I, like you, grew up poor and was in high school during the 1980’s. I remember some girls walking behind me in high school say “look she didn’t even get new clothes for Christmas”. Did it hurt. Yes, to a certain extent. But, I knew I was smarter than they were, so I felt like that was a win. I also, every Saturday watched the fashion show that aired on CNN and absolutely loved it because I love beautiful things and I also considered many of these things works of art. As an adult I did covet designer handbags and shoes, but I couldn’t fathom spending that much money in part because I didn’t feel I deserved nice things and in part because I couldn’t imagine the quality would be better than the handbags you could buy at Kohl’s. But now since I have been binge watching you and several other luxury You Tubers I have learned quite a bit and do believe the quality from some of these houses is very good, even the LV canvas. All of this being said I ended up watching 2 videos yesterday of some ladies experience shopping in Hermes in Paris during the Christmas season. All of the trouble they had to go through to get a leather appointment and then they were told there were no handbags available, they both asked several sales associates over many days the same question. I’m sorry, but if I were in Paris I would not expend that much effort into shopping. I will be at the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, walking around looking at the beautiful architecture, and going to Versailles. After all of that, if there is time, I would go to Louis Vuitton and to Chanel.
Great video. I’m an one of those average people who buys luxury bags, mostly pre-owned but I have bought a handful of new items and except for one time, I’ve been treated well. I have told my daughter that regardless of the store and what it sells, walk in like you belong there because you do. The zeros in your bank account or lack there off don’t represent your value or lack of. I buy what I like, fashion and trends doesn’t come into it for me but everyone is different. I used to work with someone who would comment on how many bags I had, how can you spend so much etc etc. this person owned THIRTY fishing rods - buy what you love be it bags or fishing rods!
This is a great video in response to this person’s comment! First, they have very valid concerns/feelings but I must say I was surprised as I hear more of this in response to Chanel and Hermes rather than LV. Of the top three luxury brands I find LV to be the most welcoming and easy to engage with. And I agree, when you initially move into luxury shopping it can be intimidating or unnerving even. I hope your response has put this person at ease and honestly no one should take luxury that seriously. This is all meant to be enjoyment of fashion, quality and design. Not some ridiculous pecking order. The people who view it that way are ruining it for all of us honestly. I’m hopeful this person’s friend legitimately enjoys the brand now that she is in a position to afford it. Because if anything luxury is personal and should fulfill our needs, not the needs of those who perceive us. I’m looking forward to the next video!
I recently bought my first luxury bag (LV Speedy), which I love. I was very nervous and intimidated going into the store for the first time. My SA was very nice and it was a great experience. My advice would be to do your research before you go; have an idea of what you want to look at or buy. Having that information will make you more confident and you can engage the SA with prepared questions and have a better discussion about the brand. I know now it was silly to feel the way I did about luxury shopping. You should be respectful of an SA's time and just be yourself and enjoy the experience.
Well said. You should be doing a TED talk on this. The comment was good. Your reply was great! I agree with everything you said and the way you explain things, really made me think of why I am an LV girl! My self esteem isn’t the greatest. However, I had an Aunt buy me my first bag at a low time in my life. I had just given my baby up for adoption. I was 16. I learned in therapy that, that is why I like my bags so much. It brought me joy at a very hard, sad time in my life. I don’t see my bags as status, and would be upset if I was making someone feel less than. I just really like them. I think you really are an incredibly classy person with a healthy way of thinking. You also have a gift for explaining yourself. I am sure you are giving a voice to so many that just didn’t know how to articulate what is going on. Going into a store to look around should never make anyone uncomfortable. Same as owning a luxury bag should not make anyone uncomfortable. At the end of the day, it is just a bag! Just a bag I happen to love. Thank you Autumn. This was a great video!❤️❤️❤️
I disagree with point 1. I’ve always had great treatment at Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Fendi and YSL and I don’t fit the brand. I’m 50, overweight and nothing I wear (clothing wise) is luxury. I think it’s more about how you are than an SA is. I’m always friendly, polite and appreciative and get great service in return. I like the screamy loud bags. I’ve carried solid color bags by whole life. Now they bore me. I think LV monogram, Gucci web, Dior oblique and Fendi Zucca are beautiful. That’s why I buy them. I hope people think I’m carrying fakes so they leave me alone.
Excellent video Autumn. One of my favourite quotes is Perception is reality, and it is fir all of us. But your perception is not always someone else’s reality. Loved all your points.
Some people carry bags with logos and brand names on them that they really don't care too much about! They have purchased the bag for other reasons, quality, shape, size, material or colour. They like everything else about it. That could be me! As far as the associates, you get positive or negative people in every company! People are people.
Hi Autumn Beckman… I love your point on these. I do feel too that people judge me for having luxury bags but not have luxury lifestyle. I just love the design and logo but people think I am trying to upstage them in life or to show off when all I want is to shop with my Louis Vuitton bag, is that so bad??? I think people just hate people in general. Some people feel inferior when they compare themselves to others…
This person’s comments were very thought provoking and I have to say they make total sense and I do agree somewhat. Autumn made excellent points as well. I once went to pick up my bag at LV Naples when wearing a cheap bag and converse. I was totally ignored until I had to speak up and say I was there to pick up a bag. I usually deal with an SA directly from LV client services and have had better service. She just mails me what I want. Regarding canvas, I love it. I’m not feeling all leather bags. Excellent video.
I some what agree with your viewer, however, at one time I was the Manager over fine diamonds in a high end department store. When high end jewelry brands were going to have a sale or bring in new items, the store mandated that I personally call each person who purchased said brand and offer them a personal viewing of the sale and new items. This certainly drove sales, because the customers enjoyed the extra attention. We really shouldn’t place blame on the CSA, the stockholders want growth and the stores want to please the stockholders in order to stay in business. This takes place all the way down to the Lancome counter. Nobody’s to blame really; making money is what makes the world go around.
I love this!!!!! Also, I love that you don’t care about the “internet hero’s” negative comments. Great discussion. Thank you for sharing. All the best ❤
I don’t think that is why her friend collects LV ( insecurities) … most ppl I know collect them and other bags because we love them , they’re addictive and beautiful!!!! I love the canvas bags from LV , Goyard, Prada’s nylon is so fun and Fendi has some beautiful cloth bags so it doesn’t have to be leather . But I have those too .Actually canvas lasts longer and is said to be tougher than leather ( durability) .I don’t just collect a level of designer tho , if I liked a target bag enough I would buy it ,but after having a lot of luxury there is definitely a level of quality that you can not get with cheaper bags and they don’t have the designs so therefore we end up becoming bag snobs right 🤷🏻♀️ 😂 I mean don’t get me wrong , in most cases I don’t see the “quality “as worth $3000 + because Coach leather is actually nicer than some higher priced brands leathers , but they lack in the design creativity dept and seem to just copy the higher designers when it comes to their look …. I do not care what anyone thinks and I don’t carry or dress for others , but if I look at my bag and it makes me happy then it’s worth it ❤. Any lady that LVOES the bags knows that feeling you get when you look at that pretty bag or shoes ❤
We all have choices. Thats hers- isn’t it great that we can all buy what we love and be responsible for our own choices? We can shop where we feel comfortable and support those businesses. The points are valid for her but not everyones experience- if someone makes you feel less than - then you need to see why their opinion matters… great video.
When I first started looking to purchase Louis Vuitton I stalked the website. I familiarized myself with their stock and wrote down the names of purses that spoke to me. First time at a Louis Vuitton store I asked to see the bags I picked. Some of them were bigger than I realized and some did not appeal to me once I saw them. Never bought a bag that first time but it helped me to concentrate on things in bags that are important to me. Btw…love canvas bags because they are not too heavy. Good for people who have back problems! Love your channel Autumn 😊
This was a great topic to cover. You both made some really good points. Autumn you said the exact term I was thinking, perception. Interesting how we perceive certain behaviors and begin to tell ourselves stories. Not that these behaviors don’t happen because sometimes they do but we as normal human nature tend to tell ourselves stories or perceive behaviors a certain way.
Thanks for this video, Autumn. I agree with your take that so much of this comes down to our own perception. At the end of the day we need to be true to ourselves. Buy what you love, and don't worry about what other people think/say. My tip for 1st time shoppers: do some research so you have an idea of what you might want to purchase, but be open to seeing what the brand has. My best purchases have come from SA suggestions. Be confident in yourself. Be friendly and kind to your SA.
Aren’t their commissions based on selling certain bags? I saw on a video that they don’t get commission for everything they sell and that’s why they have to push certain ones.
Hi, I think her comment was well thought out and very much on target. I think times have changed. When I was in my teens and 20s only the rich and/or famous sported luxury bags. Even Coach and Dooney were considered high end. Now it seems that the middle class has just as much access to these luxuries and I think the designer houses want to weed out their clientele and go back to only the elite having their products. But this is just my opinion 😊 TFS.
Excellent commentary! Just visited the LV Dallas store and had a wonderful experience & I didn’t buy anything as of yet.😉 I have to admit. Before going in the store, I went to another store to build up the nerve and courage to walk in LV. I don’t know why it’s like that.😆 But as you said, it was all in my head. But the store experience & learning more about the history of the brand, the collections & the artistry behind the products, I’m definitely buying LV. It aligns with my travel lifestyle & my love and appreciation of art & creativity.
I love the last few minutes of this video most. During the video, all I could think was if there are sa’s treating customers badly, that’s on them and not necessarily the company execs and philosophy. We all have certain goals of things we want, either to own or achieve, and it varies from person to person. For some handbags, others cars or watches, owning a home vs renting, having x amount of money in the bank, or stocks, or retirement account etc. what may be important to me may not matter much to the next person. But that doesn’t make my wants better or more important or valuable than others. We have to be careful when we slide down this slope of exclusion/ exclusivity to not put our opinions on those who have different wants or needs than ours. Because if we’re not careful, we can become the shamers who think the people carrying or wearing these brands are also being snobby or exclusionary, when all they’ve done is attempted to do what we all want, and that’s live our best life.
I think the shaming comes from your peers, not the sales associates. We still "keeping up with the Jones", even though we think & know better. With social media, luxury is constantly being shown to us.
There is not one word you’ve said that I don’t agree with: this is why I watch Autumn!! It’s all our own perceptions: And THANKS for the Dooney coupon code. I’ve been waiting for a good coupon to replace my Florentine satchel I lost during a move. I finally pulled the trigger today with your link! Honestly I love my Dooney and Coach leathers more than my LV ones or even my Hermes.
I love LV bags and accessories and I admit part of that is probably from wanting things like that when I was young. It felt like all the successful people had it! It’s a funny dichotomy because I really really like the canvas bags but I also feel embarrassed wearing it sometimes, like I shouldn’t have it? Or I’m silly for spending that money on it? And I don’t want to look like an entitled person. It’s a weird combination of emotions! I enjoyed this video!
I love the canvas bags too; actually they're the only bags I like because they're classic. I think people who slam the canvas bags don't realize that's how LV started over a 100 years ago, by inventing a process to coat canvas so it wears like leather. I love visiting the LV Maison stores that have displays of trunks and bags that are still in great condition dating back to the early 1900's. Tell me how a bag is low quality and be a 100 years old..LOL 🥰
Kudos to you, I agree 100% . Love your input and videos. Can you please touch upon Mens luxury items example wallets. Im a guy and am starting to collect, I own Prada, Gucci, Coach and LV wallets and would like some further info on theses and other brands. Thank you in advance. Your big fan .
I am from NZ and outside Auckland one would be hard pressed to find an overseas luxury store. So I find discussions like this interesting but curious and representing a worldview that is not common everywhere. One does not often see luxury bags in daily use here. What is more common is ubiquitous local brands like Deadly Ponies. Frankly except for certain professional or social groups if you carry a luxury brand bag ( not mid level like Coach or Marc Jacobs or UK Brands like Mulberry)many people are going to assume it is a fake.
I’d agree to have an idea of what you are looking for before going into the store. Also being realistic based on your lifestyle and not trying to buy something because you saw it all over SM.
great video as always🌞 if people are new to luxury handbags my advice would be: If you like your bag pristine, avoid vachetta😂❤ & black goes with everything😂❤
So I don't fit the ideal with brands if you base it on advertising, I don't mind going into the store but I don't choose too, I buy it 2nd hand or online. I live to far away to build a relationship with an SA.
SPOT ON Autumn! LV's target customer is the average or middle class person who aspires to a luxury lifestyle. An LV bag is, in the consumers mind a relatively affordable piece of that lifestyle. Exclusivity is part of that smart marketing design.
Totally agree with you about LV’s target customer. It is reverse psychology for the reasons you explained. Not the point of your video but it does seem they are pricing out their target customer. I’ve been doing a little research for a future video and noticed there are several items that are available on the website when previously not available.
I've been very lucky. I never experienced snobbery, shaming, or any other negative experiences from the sales people. Gucci used to have a reputation of the sales people being rude to customers. My cousin, who also loves luxury, believed that if the salespeople are rude, the customer should be rude right back.
The canvas on LV will outlast the leather vachetta. I'm a witness to that. And you can always have the vachetta replaced by LV. So yes, it is canvas but the type is extraordinarily excellent.
Luxury stores seem to imbue SA with the power to choose who to sell to. Some are genuinely nice and some are downright rude. They must be told to do this..
What about the company's customer service culture? And does that mean that we enable these exclusionary "unfriendly" (for lack of a better word) cultures by continuing to purchase?
So many really interesting and well articulated points, as always! It has me thinking about the spate of price increases at LV and what that means for the brand. I don't know if it's true, but I keep hearing that LV is moving away from canvas and toward a line predominated by increasingly high priced leather products. While it could be that's just a ploy to sell more canvas in the short term due to FOMO, it seems like the longterm objective of these two trends is to be more exclusionary and thereby increase the perception of exclusivity of the brand. I don't think this is because the LVMH execs or its board of directors are motivated by snobbery though, I think it's just a business decision. I believe they want the brand to be perceived as less attainable, as is the case with Chanel and Hermes, but more than that, it's just dollars and cents: if you can sell fewer products at a much higher price per unit, production costs are reduced and profits are increased. This is still consistent with your argument that the company doesn't care who buys their products, they just care about the bottom line.
Hey autumn. Great video! We couldn’t go to your beach house bc they won’t take dogs. Sadly. Still on the hunt for this years fave week at the beach. Can’t wait for you to be an Oregonian like me. :0
So I have branded and unbranded items, I like all of them, if someone likes my bag I will tell them who made it. I want to promote the designers that make my bag. My favorite totes are lands end they are not expensive and I don't have any issue with showing the brand. I do feel priced out of lv boutique. I had friends that didn't like walking into a lux store. I told the friend these people work here, we are her to shop here. It's all about perspective, I just don't like having to ask to see things or waiting in lines. I just like the thing and buy it. I don't really care about the packaging or dustbag. I don't buy anything to sell it on, I buy it because I like it. I also wear a ton of Disney branding if you know me you know I love mickey and nobody has really said how elite of you. Lol 😆 I do get you should wear a better brand.
In 2019 i jumped through fire and hoops to get my hands on the Favorite bag in monogram. I never want to go through that again. I wish it was as simple as going into the store, picking up the bag and paying for it. Why do we need to establish a relationship, a history or simply be lucky on the day?
I've never gone into a luxury retail store because it's so intimidating, and I also want to look at items and think about things for days (or weeks) before making a purchase. When you go into these stores and this is your position, do you just tell them that?
Yes, you can just tell them that. When I go in just to look and am assigned an SA (only happens at some stores) I do it to see specific items and I try to be quick about it so I don't use up too much of their time that they could spend with people who plan to buy. At LV I have an associate who I've known for years (knew her from a different store before she worked at LV). I almost never buy things or if I do it's something small like a bandeau or perfume. When I ask if I can go in to look at something I tell her I won't take up much of her time so she can get to her paying customers but we get to talking and she usually keeps me there for an hour or so, showing me all kinds of things that she knows I won't buy (can't afford) like exotic capucines bags but that she knows I'll appreciate.
I've never been treated poorly in a luxury store. I am also upfront with my intentions so I don't waste their time. I'm an unapologetic Coach Outlet girl. I do have LV luggage and recently bought my first LV purse. It's my experience that the outlet/fake bag carriers tend to be the ones who care who is carrying what. At the end of the day we're all just trying to literally and figuratively carry our stuff in this world.
Yup, I agree with everything you said. I don’t care what anyone thinks about my bags. I know what they are, that’s all I care about. And I hope that my bag obsession passes more sooner than later 😂. I know that CA’s can’t afford what they’re selling on their salaries and I can’t blame them for offering rare items to someone who they think will buy. But I would never think that a sales associate would not give me the opportunity to buy an item they have if it’s available. That makes no sense. Unless it’s Hermes, and that all is fairly nonsensical to me.
I agree. We also can speak on code switching in that you would or would not dress or speak a certain way. As one of my grandmothers would say, "You can be poor, but not dirty." When I worked in Washington D.C., I met and worked with Joe Kennedy, Jr. ( I was taken by surprise by the way he appeared so slip shod in his dress.) If you saw him on the street, you would realize who he was. It's a perception and impression.
I understand these arguments, but I also feel like the big hole in these arguments is the ability to purchase directly from LV, Dior, even Hermes (non quota) online. No one is excluding who can/cannot purchase online. That makes me think that those brands are more interested in $$ than exclusion. There are exceptions to that - Chanel & Goyard - but luxury goods, in general, are widely accessible to anyone with internet and a PayPal credit account.
PS: The first time I went to Paris, I remember standing outside a boutique (it was YSL for me in those days), yearning to go inside and not doing so because I thought (quite literally!) that you had to have a bank balance like an Onassis heir to be allowed through the door! These days, my only qualification is that I won't go into a boutique if I am carrying a duplicate! (I have no fakes, but I do enjoy my dupes!) Thank you again for the video!
My philosophy is "if you don't like it, don't buy it. But don't shame others for their choices".
How do you feel with browsers? Can we say we're browsing and be able to be alone to look?
Actually this happened to me in Paris recently. I do not belive it is a thing of the past at all.
That’s so cool. How did that opportunity arise?
@@makeupnmedicine They sent me an email asking if I wanted to participate.
Autumn, you addressed this perfectly. I don’t know how you manage to remember everything and still address each point in a rational and eloquent way ❤
So we just returned from Paris, France on Feb 28th.
WOW! That sounds incredible! What a dream!
There are certain things I see people
Spending money on that I think it’s wasteful. But luckily we’re all allowed to be different 😊
Pretty sure I stole that phrase from Cassie Thorpe. ❤️
Oh darlin they were jealous. Plain and simple.
Luxury is aspirational. Their market is the middle class. - Autumn Beckman 👏
I was immediately waited on she was not
which was surprising because she was carrying they're brand my bag was from Target and I realize It was all
about the look and how you carry yourself and if you fit the part they assume. SAD BUT TRUE
Lv Portland is the best! They are so kind, they let my son whom is 8 try on man bags while I was looking and purchasing. They even have him and I perfume and cologne. Love that store
Yes I agree. I ordered something over the phone from LV Portland. Very nice
What did you get from LV that day ???? ❤ I love this story
The true way to be free is to not judge anyone for what they wear and buy. Be it from Goodwill, Walmart, Target, LV, kate spade, or Coach.
Great video Autumn I really enjoyed it - perception is everything, especially reality!
Hi Autumn Beckman…
I love your point on these.
Yess. I’m seeing this a lot now could have to do with the global economy. People aren’t happy for others anymore. Now they are super jealous.
I love the respectful discourse on both sides here!
Great video!! I have felt intimidated at Saks 5th also and you are correct. It is all in my head!
Always a thoughtful and intelligent video. I always appreciate your point of view and the way you present information.
I remember that LV ad. it was so beautiful.
I was so impressed when Mikhail Gorbachov was in an ad for LV luggage. LVMH are very good at creating a mood and having wide appeal.
What an excellent video, Autumn. You articulated your thoughts so well and they reflected so much of what I feel too. Well done.
This is my first video w you and u r so smart and calming. Love what u have to say!❤
Just visited the LV Dallas store and had a wonderful experience & I didn’t buy anything as of yet.😉
I have to admit. Before going in the store, I went to another store to build up the nerve and courage to walk in LV. I don’t know why it’s like that.😆
But as you said, it was all in my head.
“Do my work for me please” 🤣 you are so funny 💛 love your videos.
I think the shaming comes from your peers, not the sales associates. We still "keeping up with the Jones", even though we think & know better. With social media, luxury is constantly being shown to us.
I enjoyed your video and response to this comment. I absolutely am a huge fan of the canvas myself ❤
Gewr topic and points thanks for sharing.
Yay so excited for this video. Hope you’re doing well
Coated canvas is not just durable it's lightweight. I don't want to be weighed down by a bag before its got anything of mine in it...
Love the video! I agree with everything you said! So good! That was a great comment!!!! 😊
This was a fantastic video,I really appreciated it Autumn…thank you.🙏🏻🥰
Very well said, I really enjoyed this video!
There is not one word you’ve said that I don’t agree with: this is why I watch Autumn!! It’s all our own perceptions:
And THANKS for the Dooney coupon code.
Wear that logo loud and proud that’s what I say. Then again they can say what they want. Yes I’m that secure.
Thank you for explaining for point of view!
Autumn, great video. Thank you for doing this one.
I’d agree to have an idea of what you are looking for before going into the store. Also being realistic based on your lifestyle and not trying to buy something because you saw it all over SM.
thank you this Autumn LV Burberry Coach is for everything thank you so much
great video as always🌞 if people are new to luxury handbags my advice would be: If you like your bag pristine, avoid vachetta😂❤ & black goes with everything😂❤
I agree and LVMH knows this and are cashing in.
Super interesting discussion, I have nothing to add!
Totally agree with you about LV’s target customer. It is reverse psychology for the reasons you explained. Not the point of your video but it does seem they are pricing out their target customer. I’ve been doing a little research for a future video and noticed there are several items that are available on the website when previously not available.
Great response to a thoughtful comment.
I've been very lucky. I never experienced snobbery, shaming, or any other negative experiences from the sales people. Gucci used to have a reputation of the sales people being rude to customers. My cousin, who also loves luxury, believed that if the salespeople are rude, the customer should be rude right back.
Fantastic conversation! Very interesting!
The canvas on LV will outlast the leather vachetta. I'm a witness to that. And you can always have the vachetta replaced by LV. So yes, it is canvas but the type is extraordinarily excellent.
Always insightful and great response
Excellent video Autumn…thank you🥰
Luxury stores seem to imbue SA with the power to choose who to sell to. Some are genuinely nice and some are downright rude. They must be told to do this..
Not related to this .... can I know how do you remove odor from your lv bags please?
What about the company's customer service culture? And does that mean that we enable these exclusionary "unfriendly" (for lack of a better word) cultures by continuing to purchase?
Tip1 don’t be afraid to say what your willing to spend

Great video and topic
Excellent responses. I’m about to make a video and some of these ideas are going to be discussed.
@@AutumnBeckmanAwesome, this is good to know. I still need to work up the nerve to walk in, haha! Thank you!
Excellent video!
Great video as always Autumn😊😊
Great video!
PS Autumn, is that a Boetie? I’m thinking of getting one. Thoughts?
Excellent video
Any thoughts on Fuere le Page?
I understand these arguments, but I also feel like the big hole in these arguments is the ability to purchase directly from LV, Dior, even Hermes (non quota) online. No one is excluding who can/cannot purchase online. That makes me think that those brands are more interested in $$ than exclusion. There are exceptions to that - Chanel & Goyard - but luxury goods, in general, are widely accessible to anyone with internet and a PayPal credit account.
That was a good Q&A 👏
PS: The first time I went to Paris, I remember standing outside a boutique (it was YSL for me in those days), yearning to go inside and not doing so because I thought (quite literally!) that you had to have a bank balance like an Onassis heir to be allowed through the door! These days, my only qualification is that I won't go into a boutique if I am carrying a duplicate! (I have no fakes, but I do enjoy my dupes!) Thank you again for the video!
