    That must be quite gratifying, to hear the inspector’s recognition of the incredible amount of work you have done AND his acknowledgement that you have done the work correctly, Flying Coney is worth the work, and if she could talk, she would thank you.

    .... Noooooooo. It is never a good time to finish your videos, never. I always hope they would last "just one more minute, please".
    Haha.

    Great one again!

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually we were half way through the port waterline at the survey day. That's why Daniels face is so dirty. Well, the mentioning of sandblasting continues until learning improves. Honestly, blasting and repainting are one of the biggest necessary steps in the entire refit. Choosing a blasting method, the right coating system, the right color. Can we do it before laying down a new deck. Should we blast inside and outside on the same day. Since we're planning the next shipyard time we're thinking about all that quite often.
      And, it's a running gag 😂

    I have enjoyed all your videos with your journey. My partner and I bought a 60 year 0ld Dutch North Sea beam trawler that had been converted for pleasure vessel. It had been sitting in a harbour being neglected of essential maintenance for many years and the previous owner had basically made it unfit for sea as he was turning it into a residential apartment. That was 6 years ago, we bought a rusting steel trawler that was floating and livable. Needless to say we have had a similar journey to yourselves and when we finally saved up enough money to have our ship out of the water, I made it sea worthy and sailed it to a floating dock. We had discussed sand blasting as this was a concept I had experienced decades ago and understood, but the dock owner assured me it was much better to hydro blast as it would acheive the same result with far less mess and waste (also considerably cheaper). Much easier to clean up the residue and put into recycle waste stream. I trusted him. He was right. We also trusted him to spray the five coats of two pack paints. Then the tie coat to allow the antifoul paint to adhere. That was one year ago. We also had our hull surveyed and had a few puddle welds done. Much other welding of Gunwhale stantions, some deck plating and other sundry welding was undertaken. This last two weeks we invested in upgrading our electrics to have two solar arrays and completely stripped out the old charger, inverter and associated wiring for completely new Victron system professionally installed. We hope this will get us off marina electric (horredously expensive) so that once we have paid for it, we will be saving money by generating our own power 24/7. We are not finished with getting the ship fit for our adventures yet, but we hope to be ready in one or two years. It is not easy doing a project like this with just two regular salaries coming in. Keep producing your journey videos, it proves we are not the only mad ones who love the challenge of old steel vessels 🙂

    Its so nice to see the expert happy with the results of all the work. At least you can take your time and get the frame ends prepared ready to fix later. Hydro blasting sounds a good option, it might be worth getting quotes for that and sand blasting to get an idea how much its going to cost (later) great update 2x👍

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Allan, when we were back at the hard we wanted to get a quote on sandblasting and Jan spoke for us with a company. But this company refused to do it because of the risk of potentially damaging the hull. Since hydrojet blasting (It's similar to water jet cutting) only uses water and no extra material, well I actually don't think it's more expensive than sandblasting. But it's not only about the blasting itself, we also need a closed dry dock or a shed to put a two component paint on. Maybe we want to go down the copper coat route, that's also expensive. So a lot of things to consider.

    • @dcallan812
      @dcallan812 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FlyingConey Thats a surprise they wouldn't do a quote, at least you are not paying yard fees and have the time to plan the next move. Copper would be nice but as you say its expensive and only going up in cost currently. Congratulations to you both for getting the old lady back in the water.

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The people in Urk know each other very well and are proud about their craftsmanship and about their fishing heritage. So if Jan asks the sandblasting guy he's not just asking a random bloke. They do honest toil and they don't do something just for the money. But that doesn't mean it's impossible to sandblast just that this one company prefers not to because of the rivets. An other company maybe knows a way to do it.

      We want to sail all over the world and with people from all over the world. Sailing always had connected people and we always wanted to honor that tradition. I love to listen to books about the age of sail and find it fascinating how many nationalities sailed a ship together. Another example are shanties that sometimes include a mix of different languages.

      It wasn't easy and it was last minute to rescue the boat. Now we have a good sound hull and soon we'll have the structure repaired. Then the fun part begins! Thanks for watching and following the journey.

    how do you think one of those laser beam rust removers would work on your boat?

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a great option but without the "survey" factor of media or water jet blasting. Finding all the weak spots and repairing them will improve the safety of the hull. On the other hand the laser could be the perfect way to remove the bitumen like coating on the inside. BUT a 2000 watt machine is 6650€ per week! Without an operator.

    I'm still donating on Patreon, but noticed my name is no longer being shown... Are you still receiving it?
    Just wondering - maybe changes were made that I'm not aware of...
    No biggie, love the videos...

      Hi Robert, we are still receiving your donations and tank you for your generosity! Tomorrow is an exclusive group chat on Discord and it would be great if you find the time to join.
      We welcome every new Patreon in the videos and the name stays in the list for at least a month or for four videos. We think that's a good way to show how much we appreciate each and every Patreon. From the "Bosun" rank onwards the name is shown on the "Officers" board in each and every video.
      Hope to see you tomorrow and I hope that explains it a bit.

    Your Vessel looks like an old.. "" BEAM TRAWLER ""... I've worked on one, it was built in 1928 all ribbit, the forward for peak ,was a crew quarter with crew quarters back aft below the wheelhouse, she had this engine twas a locomotive engine, she would burn 8 gallon an hr.she actually had a book with all the old crew members names and it read what they would leave to there relatives if the vessel were torpedoed and someone got killed as she was fishing off the
    "" Grand Banks "" off of Canada and New England USA, I just loved working on her, But there was one thing I did not like, if she were in force 10 with heavy seas, if the boat was broadside to huge waves, her whole port or starboard side was totally under the waves, she even had variable pitch props, too, My boss put 1 hundred thousand to make her beautiful and she was..well you guy's will have a proper boat for sure when Comey is finished.

    He's a great surveyor, most surveyors I've seen are doom sayers, real downers, everything is too much of a job, too much work, or it's not worth the effort/money etc etc. refreshing to see a surveyor who is a bit more upbeat and positive

      The CVO certification is a relatively new thing here in the Netherlands and the surveyors do know that owning and running a ship this size isn't easy for private persons. Ships like Flying Coney are part of the dutch heritage and we often talked with old fishermen who recognized the boat from back when she was fishing. Jurgen also loves these old ships and tries to help us to bring it back to live but also made sure that the vessel is safe.

      The whole story is that pet rabbits always played an important role in our lives. So we were a bit cheeky and sneeked it in with the older word "coney". Some even say the word has some bawdiness to it, what is very much appropriate for a ship. The "Flying" comes from our past in the foiling Nacra 17 class. And the name would look great on a bottle of rum. Are you from Ireland?

    Your videos need to be much longer with more video and less talking. You have been making videos since the boat has been out of water which according to your videos that we’ve been watching has been 7 months or so. In todays video Jurgen mentioned that it has only been a month since you started your work. With that information it seems that you guys are really stretching out your content. I’ve been saying for months that you need to put more content into your videos. Now this is only my opinion and I’m really curious how others feel about this. PLEASE don’t take this message as me being nasty or a troll, I really like your channel, I love what you are doing I would just love to see more content during each video. Thank you and congratulations on passing your inspection. ❤❤
