You can shoot 4k w/ a $400 GoPro 3. But you are right the cameras right now are expense but hopefully with all these 4K Tvs coming out this year cheaper camera solutions will as well.

You can see the quality difference at lower resolution. I see on 1680x1050. Get the BS/MS degree in CS , or read some books on theory of information (enthropy coding/decoding), and numerical mathematics (interpolation) and then you will understand why... Have a nice day

The physical size of the screen doesn't affect the resolution. For example I could have a 42" 4K screen and it would look better than a 42" 1080p screen. Although physical screen size does affect pixel density, so for instance a 480p video would look better on a 5" screen than it would on a 55" screen. This also depends on how far you are away from the screen.

The video is 4096x2304. It may say 2048x1536 depending on your displays resolution. If you keepvid video you get the full resolution.

Plays fine on 'Original' with 6Gb/s SSD on Retina Macbook Pro.
Original is roughly 4000, I don't know the exact resolution, but it is a higher resolution than 1080.
