actually the best thing this movie did was making Toriyama hate it so much he went and helped make Battle of Gods which basically revived the whole series
@Angelo Bruno It was indeed revived. Before BotG, there's nothing. It has already ended to the eyes of many. Now because of those two movies (BotG & R:F) the series got a second life.
@Angelo Bruno Crunchyroll's servers went down when Super episodes 109-110 were released because of the massive online traffic it got, DBS Broly was a hit, and there's an upcoming movie again. I don't see why its' second life would be "cursed." Sure there are lots of better shounen anime series out there, and you could also say that DBS is only anchoring on nostalgia and the old fans who still love the series. But it def got a healthy second life.

This is, without a doubt, the worst anime movie adaptation ever made. It was so bad that Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, felt the need to come out of retirement and continue the series after seeing how bad this movie was.
I dont know how you guys did it. I came into the movie 30min late and the theater was empty. Only 6 people max and i still never knew why it was called dragon ball till this day.

On rewatch the stuff with yamcha pikkoro blooma and even most of roshi wasn't that awful....if only chi chi anx mai were not really in the film maybe 1 scene each and goku and gohan were better than that...it could of been saved a little from being god awful to just bad...still only would be a 4 but it's better than a 2
Yes , he definitely redeemed himself from that aweful role. Also it's worth to note that James Marsters is a huge DragonBall fan (which is why he auditioned for Zamasu in super) and when evolution was being worked on , he tried many times to have the director to change the script to actually make it faithful to the franchise but as a actor he couldn't do anything.

The worst part is that the kamehameha really is used for anything the story needs, Goku has used it as a cpr replacement, to fly spaceships, launch himself through enemies, and even to jump start someone else' energy technique, but this movie screwed up everything else so bad....

The race of the characters were never super important in DB because the countries and cities are not the same as the real world. Still, literally everything in this movie was done wrong.
I mean at the end of the day goke and Vegeta are as Asian as Superman is white. If they were gonna go with an Asian Gohan they probably should have just went with a Asian Goku(I know they aren't biologically related)
Honestly think it would be best to make the sayians Chinese considering toriyama's love of Chinese culture and the fact that he based a lot of outfits and other things around that culture. Make the saiyans Chinese and the earthlings Japanese.

"This guy's awful" He quite literally didn't give a fuck to deliver a good performance xD He was simply there for a paycheck and nothing else. Chow Yun-Fat is an amazing actor, appearing in movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow etc. He worked a lot with John Woo. But yea, while he was terrible in this movie (basically like everyone else xD) he really didn't care for his role. Funnily enough he was actually kind of "tricked" into joining the movie, same as James Marsters. They had told them it would be a 120 million dollar budget movie and that Steven Chow was producing (he did Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer). They get to Mexico to film and it turns out it's a 30 million dollar budget movie and Steven Chow was not attached at all.
The character of goku is written very poorly so he had no chance....the show version is a little bit better because he's ignorant but powerful and the combination is fun to watch

I felt bad for James Marsters because he respect and admire the anime show since he was a huge fan of it. That's why he tried his very best to look like piccolo with that makeup on and such. It took hours to do that. He's the only guy I felt bad cuz of his deep respect for the dbz anime
Just FYI: This was an adaptation of Dragonball, not Dragonball z. Meaning there is not supposed to be, Super Saiyans, no Vegita, no mention that Goku isn't human at all. That much the movie got right.... But that's about all it got right

I only watched it so that when I ranted about hating it I knew specifically everything that I hated about it. I personally believe this is legitimately the absolute worst movie that ever happened.
Facts, Gohan looks how he should, but for Goku & other members of the saiyan race, they should have a more ethnically ambiguous look to them, they shouldn’t just look like your everyday person Asian or not
I swear the only part in this whole movie where he even remotely felt like Goku was when he told Bulma to check the phonebook for "Master" and taught her to spell it while he was stuffing his face. Past that point this was 100% just Peter Parker preparing to fight The Green Goblin, doing so, then making a magic wish. And yes. I mean The Green Goblin. He's green, pointy eared, wearing purple, shows up on a flying machine and he has an evil lab.
Fun fact: Jamie Chung (the girl who plays Chi-Chi) was also Go-Go in Big Hero 6 Also Also, not ONLY did James Marsters (the guy who played Piccolo) go on to voice a DBS (Dragon Ball Super) villian BUT he was also Brainiac/Brainiac 5 i Smallville
I hope this opens the door for them to react to the Original Dragon Ball series Anime in english. Since that, is what this movie is "trying" to deliver. During this pandemic, i've seen a lot of youtubers reacting to it & it's a breath of fresh air. The show feels like a fun journey book with a lot of emotion & the great side quests in the show. I have a feeling they would be shocked by it. I also think it would be great content from them, rather watch reel rejects react OG DB than all of these other youtubers. Also they seem like casual Dragon Ball fans, so it would be all brand new to them. Or maybe i will fantasize about it , in my dreams lol.
I don't know how you two can sit through this without gouging your eyes out before the end. This movie ruined anything and everything Dragonball for me after I watched it.
Dragonball Evolution is so weird because it's like they misunderstood how the Ki works in Dragonball and mistook it as some kind of telekinesis... I didn't think the core plot was too bad of an adaptation, it was just scuffed in every other way lol
I know nothing about Dragonball but I've seen multiple reviews of this film so I know how embarrassing of a legacy it left after its release. Later I ended up watching it when it was airing on TV once and even with my lack of knowledge I could tell it was an insult to fans of the source material. It's an incredibly boring and pointless film with little to no entertainment value. I don't even think you can classify it as so bad it's good, it's just bad lol
*They could have made a decent movie (with zero CGI) just by following a basic story (ie a martial arts tournament).* Imagine if they just had teenage Goku, Krillin, Yamaha etc with the movie climax being a tournament. They could have made a decent movie. P.s. Goku is an alien (Saiyan) remember.

I rented it just to see how bad it was when it first released. Bad enough for my brain to say "no" and wipe all memory of it. I remember nothing about this movie, and it'll remain this way forever. Boys, ya should have tricked Stuckman into watching this too, just for the laughs. Seriously this movie is awful. How Emmy Rossum got a career outta this wreck is pretty impressive. No offense to others here like Jamie Chung but she took the ball and ran.
At the age Goku is in this film, He should already know about the dragon balls, who Balma and Chichi are... The whole thing is just a big mess. WHy! The one good thing about this is that the creator of Dragon Ball Hated the film sooo much that He jumped started the series again to make sure no one confused this movie with the real Manga or Anime giving us... Dragon Ball Super. :-)
In all fairness, the character Goku does not have an Asian lineage. He's a Saiyan. So for him being casted as white or any other race is not necessarily wrong since the Saiyan race is fictional. I agree being a Japanese anime at least cast him appropriately to honor the source.
Goku did looked a little Asian in the anime. They should've casted an actor who was half asian. The actor who played Jin in Tekken would've been a better cast for Goku.
Bro, you have to acknowledge the fact the fact that you have a double Standard in that regard. Superman and Supergirl are aliens. But does that stop them from being white or white adjacent? What is the difference between a human and a Saiyan visually aside from the tails? You are also dismissing the fact that Gine, Cabba, Kale and Caulifla all have more explicit Asian features. Or do they still look like Aliens to you? Goku wasn't even intended to be an Alien until over hundreds of chapters later.
@@kenshix7902 I'm not arguing that the casting could have been more accurate to the source. I'm merely acknowledging the liberties that studios take. Kind of like casting Michael Clark Duncan as the Kingpin. As far as Caba, Kale etc., YES I agree they are depicted as being far more in line with a Japanese lineage visually. The drawn styles between universe 6 and 7 vary in those regards. Universe 7 characters generally have a more heavy eyebrow line with a more rounded eye (when not scowling). Universe 6 has a pin line eyebrow and more football shaped elongated eye. I see the differences in styles.

Here this is the only live action for DB and In the TV show he could be confused as asian or caucasian in the anime I mean he can change his hair color to blonde and his eyes can turn blue. I agree that he'd probably still be white even if he looked more asian in the anime because it's Hollywood after all but it's not a fact that he's fully asian since he's a alien. I think a half asian and caucasian actor would've been perfect for the role. Chatwin was miscast badly
I know I'm well over a year late here, but everyone missed one result of this movie: this movie was so bad that the actor who played Piccolo (James Marsters, who also played Spike in Buffy) got with the voice directors of Dragon Ball Super and voiced Zamasu for free to make up for it
After seeing One Piece live action, i checked this out again and I realize how goddam good OP live action is. This is so bad that it breaks the bad meter and entered the good category.
I clicked on the video, turned the volume down, turned my phone off and let TH-cam Premium do the rest. Then I put my phone in a box, the box in my closet, then drove to the Atlantic Ocean, and sat in a corner of the remains of the Titanic. That's how much I, and every Dragon Ball fan, feel about this movie.
I remember seeing this with my friend and he walked out halfway through, i begrudgingly sat through it an never watched it again. Even watching this reaction was painful as a huge DB fan
If it hadn't been for Dee Bee Eee, Akira Toriyama wouldn't have continued the Dragon Ball Z story on and became just as successful as its predecessors. So in a way, this cinematic excrement was a necessary evil and a case study of what NOT to create.
37:47 I wouldn't say that they were childhood friends. Chichi suckered Gokuu and the two were betrothed--he was was too stupid to know what had happened. IIRC, Gokuu was 14 years old at the time and the two wouldn't meet again until the Tenkaiichi Budokai when Gokuu was 20. Gokuu had forgotten about her and didn't recognize her at the tournament and she of course was pissed. The ended up marrying after the tournament and the story picks up again 4 or 5 years later with Gokuu being a dad and we meet Gohan and eventually the rest of the Saiyans, beginning the Superman arc of he Dragon Ball story. Thank you for reacting to this movie. I watched this disaster of a movie for the first time with you. Man was this bad--and I got to watch the cutdown version! You guys are the real heroes here, lol. I still can't believe Akira Toriyama signed off on this, but I guess the millions he got was worth it. There are a number of fan films on TH-cam that had no where near the budget this film had and they are more true to Dragon Ball's story, have way better action and acting! WTF?! Did this movie end careers for some of these people? If not, how didn't it? John, I disagree with your assessment of the film getting the Dragon Ball's right. Touching the dragon balls doesn't trigger memories. The ones on Earth grant a single wish, that's it. Please react to Fist of the North Star. It's different, but a hell of a lot better than this! There actually are live action adaptations that are pretty much 1:1 to the original anime (e.g. the Erased and Kakegurui live action), but that actually makes them pretty boring because it's the same story but less visually entertaining.
I watched it as a kid, and I don't know why I liked it back then...after many rewatches (I'll never get that time back), I realised how unbearably shit it was. You know...this movie would've worked better if the protagonist was Gohan, and if the love interest was Videl. Hell...even their designs in this movie are more reminiscent of Gohan and Videl. The villain wouldn't be Piccolo though, because Gohan loves Piccolo, and he wouldn't fight against him, maybe Super Buu would work though, but he shouldn't have a side kick. Mai and Piccolo don't even work together in the anime or manga lmao, why are they working together in the movie XD. Edit: The biggest offender of this movie however, is no Krillen. The movie automatically gets -♾ points for that.
Man seeing how this movie is really makes me think of the Halo tv series. Almost same type of thing. Boring drama, no source material was used, core characters arc is falling in love, barely any action

As much as I hate to say it. I think Goku and Chichi had better relationship building in this movie than in the show. In the show they met when they were kids and Chichi fell in love and said she was going to marry him one day, cut forward to years later when they grow up they fight at the world Martial arts tournament and Chichi gets mad that he doesn't remember. Then she forces him into marriage after. That's pretty much how it happened. So I guess I'll give this movie A Plus for making that relationship a little bit better. I hate dragon Ball Z Chichi anyway, so any portrayal of her in any movie is better than that character.

Facts, Gohan looks how he should, but for Goku & other members of the saiyan race, they should have a more ethnically ambiguous look to them, they shouldn’t just look like your everyday person Asian or not
I swear the only part in this whole movie where he even remotely felt like Goku was when he told Bulma to check the phonebook for "Master" and taught her to spell it while he was stuffing his face. Past that point this was 100% just Peter Parker preparing to fight The Green Goblin, doing so, then making a magic wish. And yes. I mean The Green Goblin. He's green, pointy eared, wearing purple, shows up on a flying machine and he has an evil lab.
Fun fact: Jamie Chung (the girl who plays Chi-Chi) was also Go-Go in Big Hero 6

I hope this opens the door for them to react to the Original Dragon Ball series Anime in english. Since that, is what this movie is "trying" to deliver. During this pandemic, i've seen a lot of youtubers reacting to it & it's a breath of fresh air. The show feels like a fun journey book with a lot of emotion & the great side quests in the show. I have a feeling they would be shocked by it. I also think it would be great content from them, rather watch reel rejects react OG DB than all of these other youtubers. Also they seem like casual Dragon Ball fans, so it would be all brand new to them. Or maybe i will fantasize about it , in my dreams lol.

Dragonball Evolution is so weird because it's like they misunderstood how the Ki works in Dragonball and mistook it as some kind of telekinesis...
I didn't think the core plot was too bad of an adaptation, it was just scuffed in every other way lol
I know nothing about Dragonball but I've seen multiple reviews of this film so I know how embarrassing of a legacy it left after its release. Later I ended up watching it when it was airing on TV once and even with my lack of knowledge I could tell it was an insult to fans of the source material. It's an incredibly boring and pointless film with little to no entertainment value. I don't even think you can classify it as so bad it's good, it's just bad lol

I rented it just to see how bad it was when it first released.

At the age Goku is in this film, He should already know about the dragon balls, who Balma and Chichi are... The whole thing is just a big mess. WHy! The one good thing about this is that the creator of Dragon Ball Hated the film sooo much that He jumped started the series again to make sure no one confused this movie with the real Manga or Anime giving us... Dragon Ball Super. :-)
In all fairness, the character Goku does not have an Asian lineage. He's a Saiyan. So for him being casted as white or any other race is not necessarily wrong since the Saiyan race is fictional. I agree being a Japanese anime at least cast him appropriately to honor the source.
Goku did looked a little Asian in the anime. They should've casted an actor who was half asian. The actor who played Jin in Tekken would've been a better cast for Goku.
Bro, you have to acknowledge the fact the fact that you have a double Standard in that regard. Superman and Supergirl are aliens. But does that stop them from being white or white adjacent? What is the difference between a human and a Saiyan visually aside from the tails? You are also dismissing the fact that Gine, Cabba, Kale and Caulifla all have more explicit Asian features. Or do they still look like Aliens to you? Goku wasn't even intended to be an Alien until over hundreds of chapters later.

Kind of like casting Michael Clark Duncan as the Kingpin. As far as Caba, Kale etc., YES I agree they are depicted as being far more in line with a Japanese lineage visually. The drawn styles between universe 6 and 7 vary in those regards. Universe 7 characters generally have a more heavy eyebrow line with a more rounded eye (when not scowling). Universe 6 has a pin line eyebrow and more football shaped elongated eye. I see the differences in styles.

Here this is the only live action for DB and In the TV show he could be confused as asian or caucasian in the anime I mean he can change his hair color to blonde and his eyes can turn blue. I agree that he'd probably still be white even if he looked more asian in the anime because it's Hollywood after all but it's not a fact that he's fully asian since he's a alien. I think a half asian and caucasian actor would've been perfect for the role. Chatwin was miscast badly

I know I'm well over a year late here, but everyone missed one result of this movie: this movie was so bad that the actor who played Piccolo (James Marsters, who also played Spike in Buffy) got with the voice directors of Dragon Ball Super and voiced Zamasu for free to make up for it

I remember seeing this with my friend and he walked out halfway through, i begrudgingly sat through it an never watched it again. Even watching this reaction was painful as a huge DB fan
Even the english voice actors of Dragonball Z hated this movie.
If it hadn't been for Dee Bee Eee, Akira Toriyama wouldn't have continued the Dragon Ball Z story on and became just as successful as its predecessors. So in a way, this cinematic excrement was a necessary evil and a case study of what NOT to create.
37:47 I wouldn't say that they were childhood friends. Chichi suckered Gokuu and the two were betrothed--he was was too stupid to know what had happened. IIRC, Gokuu was 14 years old at the time and the two wouldn't meet again until the Tenkaiichi Budokai when Gokuu was 20. Gokuu had forgotten about her and didn't recognize her at the tournament and she of course was pissed. The ended up marrying after the tournament and the story picks up again 4 or 5 years later with Gokuu being a dad and we meet Gohan and eventually the rest of the Saiyans, beginning the Superman arc of he Dragon Ball story.

There are definitely some decent ones out there, even if they're not 1:1 copies of the anime (which is good imo anyways)
I liked the Bleach movie!
There actually are live action adaptations that are pretty much 1:1 to the original anime (e.g. the Erased and Kakegurui live action), but that actually makes them pretty boring because it's the same story but less visually entertaining.

I watched it as a kid, and I don't know why I liked it back then...after many rewatches (I'll never get that time back), I realised how unbearably shit it was. You know...this movie would've worked better if the protagonist was Gohan, and if the love interest was Videl. Hell...even their designs in this movie are more reminiscent of Gohan and Videl. The villain wouldn't be Piccolo though, because Gohan loves Piccolo, and he wouldn't fight against him, maybe Super Buu would work though, but he shouldn't have a side kick. Mai and Piccolo don't even work together in the anime or manga lmao, why are they working together in the movie XD.
Edit: The biggest offender of this movie however, is no Krillen. The movie automatically gets -♾ points for that.

That movie is completely forbidden in the Dragon Ball community. One of the worst live action adaptions they've done, along with The Last Airbender.
As much as I hate to say it. I think Goku and Chichi had better relationship building in this movie than in the show. In the show they met when they were kids and Chichi fell in love and said she was going to marry him one day, cut forward to years later when they grow up they fight at the world Martial arts tournament and Chichi gets mad that he doesn't remember. Then she forces him into marriage after. That's pretty much how it happened. So I guess I'll give this movie A Plus for making that relationship a little bit better. I hate dragon Ball Z Chichi anyway, so any portrayal of her in any movie is better than that character.

And Goku cares about her in the movie at least.
