    We have a huge ace hardware in our little town. It's locally owned and has just about everything you need. I haven't noticed food items but I'll look next time I'm there. They aren't the cheapest place to shop but they have saved the day for me plenty of times.

      That’s why we are lucky to have them. They have harder to find stuff that isn’t really cheap quality. Unless you want to drive and pay more in gas jugs to find a harbor freight, etc.

    My local Ace isn’t full of convenient store stuff. Lots of odds and ends and hardware. You might pay a bit more but if you don’t know we exactly what you’re doing, they offer a lot of help. They usually take me down and help me find the items. I figure I’m paying a little extra for their knowledge.

    I think that skriggit (?) is a really good find . I have been looking for something that would be less damaging then a metal scraper and stronger than a thin plastic scraper for house cleaning tasks and that might be just what I want.
    To me, the beauty of Ace Hardware is the fact that as far as I understand each owner can specialize it in the way that he or she wants to do. And I think that makes for some really unique finds.

    I think the pencil shaped chisel was the thing, I'd buy off this list.

      I bought a set of those punches/chisels...
      Overall very good, but the punches are easy to beat out with a generic nail set.

    I enjoy this series and was hoping you'd go to an Ace or True Value. Doesn't surprise me what you found there. I grew up in rural Illinois where stores like Ace Hardware and True Value carried everything to keep someone from having to travel a ways for everyday items, like tools, hunting gear, small lawn equipment, small home appliances and electronics, personal grooming and basic electronics, and even some home & garden decor. If the local hardware store didn't have it, you probably didn't need it anyway. 😀 If you wanted large appliances and equipment, you drove to the city and shopped at Sears. 😀 Today, we think of convenience as cheaply made items, but that wasn't the case back then. I'm in my late-50's, by the way.

    Ace Hardware is an interesting place, every store has a proprietary owner, and because of this, they all stock different things 😂 what they stock is also very interesting. I suspect you will find tools under $10 for your BugOut bag or emergency kits, but you’re right about the majority of the tools, (they are pricy). I’m excited you found the rods… you should take a closer look at the hardware, it’s interesting what you’ll find in those drawers you mentioned… I suspect you’ll find screwdriver bits for cheap there! Also, if they have a workstation at your store where they work on window rescreens or 🔑 key cutting, you should ask what other services they offer. Mine sharpens knives (for really cheap!)

    Ace is a real hardware chain - you can find all the nuts and bolts and wire and tools to build things besides a house. Not just fix stuff you bought. And because the big box stores are selling so cheap, they had to diversify some. As someone else pointed out, they are able to stock what is useful locally and suits the owner. The employees are knowledgeable and treated better than a big box store.

    Menards would be a good one if you have one in your area.
    Pretty fun video though, even if its light on the EDC. I have a cold forge chisel that I carry with me often, but I am looking at 1/4" ones online now... that size seems reasonable as a sub to a pry tool for EDC.
    And Lemon flavored anything is underrated, I am tempted to see if I can find that candy at my local AH. Cheers!

    Olight I3E about $10 for black $13 for other colors.
    I3T EOS AROUND $20 depending on color.
    Both use single AAA and work great with Eneloop batteries.

    I love variety of products at Ace Hardware, but the prices... yeah. I try to be understanding for places that are more conveniently located. Even considering that, I can't justify their markup except on things I can only get there.

  • @onfarm6521
    @onfarm6521 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the reason they are normally more expensive is they are locally owned. Meaning they don't get the price breaks the other bid stores get by ordering quantity. That's just my guess could be completely wrong.

      @rafaeltorre1643 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are a franchise. They pay a percentage of all sales to ACE Hardware Corporation. Thats why. McDonald’s is also but still kind of cheap because of the huge amount of sales!

    A Maglite Solitaire is usually available at most stores, beats out that energizer flashlight. 1 AAA battery gets you a lot of run time, something small, lightweight, compact, and so easy to use on a keychain.

    I shop at Ace regularly. Mine has everything from horse gear to a small post office to a lumber yard. They cost more. They just do. *But* they also pay their workers more, and those folk know their stuff. And I can actually find an employee, unlike in the big box stores. I wouldn't pay more without a reason, and my reason is that they are locally owned. If you want American jobs to be available, you gotta pay folk who are making and doing here in America. Feels like a fair trade to me for the prices.

    The bully kids had that bat where I grew up. Remember the other fatter bat? That one was fun for sword fighting and didn't hurt all that much. Although some of the funniest times were when that 3-4 year old boy got ahold of that skinny bat and would swing wildly at us while we ran around just outside the swing radius 😂

    I like Ace for what it is - convenient. The nearest Ace is about a mile from my house vs. about 6 miles to HD. Yes, Ace is pricey and sometimes I find what I'm looking for. But for me, it's about driving a mile to (hopefully) find what I need when I'm in the middle of a job and I need that whatever item right away. Beats sitting in traffic to go to HD and killing a hour.

    I had one of those football-shaped coin purses when I was in college. I kept quarters in it so that I could grab it when I took a basket of laundry to my dorm’s laundry room. (The washers and dryers were all coin-operated in those days.)

    Great video Dominic, I have this flexible Keysmart, and prefer it over the metal ones. I was using an older Key Ninja but found it a bit short for most keys, but liked the flashlight on it. Definitely like the idea of the 1/4 " cold chisel as a prybar. Cheers 🇨🇦

    Our local ace here was not that great. As another person mentioned I think the owners of the individual Ace store can choose what they stock. That work both good and bad as the one here stocked waaaay off brand stuff then charged more than name brand stuff.
    I bought white paint from there once and no amount of shaking or stirred kept it from applying like milk. I can only imagine it sat there since the doors opened no telling how many decades ago.
    So I was not impressed the reason why I would go there and I think is the real strategy of Ace is that it was close to home and I think they put it closer to the communities than Home depot. So it's convience I'd guess. Anyways I don't go there anymore due to the fact a 10 wheeler dump truck literally drove through the front door 8-10 months ago.

    Around here all Ace hardwares carry LED Maglite flashlights, including my locally owned small town Ace.
    They also carry Nebo which isn't the best, but they have some not so terrible useful lights.
    I like the NEBO slim for the money, $18 for a compact thin simple rechargeable light with a decent output.
    Btw when it comes to tools, Home Depot no longer sells real hammers which kind of kills them in my book.
    All they sell now are crappy Chinese imports which I consider worthless hammer shaped objects that I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole.
    They dropped Vaughan & Bushnell ( they own / make Dasco pro too ) almost 2 years ago, dropped Estwing not too long ago.
    Yes Ace hardware prices are more expensive, but the big Ace hardwares do sometimes have a better selection of hand tools than Home Depot.
    That being said I have recently discovered that Home Depot isn't really that great.
    Living in a small rural town I have to go to the city for any major shopping and the city I usually go to has a HD, but the other city I go to less often happens to have a Lowes as well which I discovered is much better when I had to go there for an item that was out of stock at the home depot.

    • @maxlvledc
      @maxlvledc  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't bring myself to buy a Maglite. I can't patronize a company that refuses to update technology and carry the exact same flawed design for 30 years.

    • @TylerSnyder305
      @TylerSnyder305 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maxlvledc I thought you really liked the AAA led minimag for the $14 price because the LED has a fairly high intensity ?
      Personally I really like Maglite for toolbox, workshop, and nightstand duty.
      Their only model that really fits my size preferences for EDC is the LED Solitaire but It ended up in a toolbox as well because I can't put a clip on it that won't slide off.
      I understand the lacking technology but their lights still get the job done, and they've managed to stay in their expected price bracket while continuing to pay Americans to make their products under good working conditions.
      I definitely get it and no longer choose Maglite for EDC because of these reasons, but I'm still a fan and buyer of their products for other uses.
