He told me when we were having a beer that he and another friend went out for dinner with him a few nights before. I couldn’t believe it . They didn’t know I was a fan so didn’t ask me to join them. I’m sick to my stomach that I never had a chance to meet Joe even though I had seen him in concert. I would’ve loved to have met him snd introduced him to my wife. He was such a lovely man. Also, obviously ridiculously talented. Such a frigging loss. So talented

The theatre on the North Pier here in Blackpool is named after him. He was immense. He was so ill so often yet kept fighting and he was not only badly-treated by the press, who for years made their nasty insinuations about his private life (nobody's business by the way) and also tv was often strangely absent from his career. He should have been primetime Saturday night. Bless him.
