I absolutely love this piece! Allen does a wonderful job arranging this for Big Band and I love how he has some of Clifford's original solo in there. Here is one of the best! Gotta love it!!!
Hi just wanted to introduce myself . I play many official and private functions at Aviano Air Force Base I often include this brilliant gem . I hope to have the good fortune to meet you some day. Keeping the jazz light lit is paramount in this high tech. but culturally dark time. Very nice Pax Wallace
Wow I've never ever ever heard Allen Vizzutti talk, man all this past months I though he was Italian or something, but wow he is American, and wow I'm in shock!!! FYI the preformance is great 1111
whatever....that last section where the flughel horn plays unison with the band is disgustingly on point... it's great, love the arrangement too...the sax player did for me in this rendition...
If Chris Botti took a solo over Joy Spring, it would sound something like this. Not a bad thing. Plus, that's no Wilton Felder on sax, but we already have a Wilton Felder, so give the guy some credit for sounding original. There's nothing wrong with experimenting with different individual styles within the jazz idiom.
Someone commented above that the trumpet player sounds too white. what the hell does that mean? dude, get out of the 1950s. In any case, this arrangement kicks ass.
yea, true. but i also love they way he'll shoot for notes he actually can't hit in front of an audience. wynton and some others great virtuosos won't. i really enjoy seeing that a lot.
@JazzTrumpetBlues Iranian isnt a race, U mean Persian, which encompasses Iran to afghanistan. Hindu is a religion, there are multiple super-tribes in Indian. And Italian is not a race, it is just mediterraenean white as opposed to albino white irish can be at times.
i think it's a matter of taste. He didn't really go outside of the harmonic structure to make it interesting but some people may like the arrangements over solo work.
Yeah, that kind of comment bugs me. By that yardstick, how do we account for all the Korean and Chinese musicians who play Mozart and Chopin so brilliantly? Maybe I'm getting off track a little, but the notion that you have to be born into a tradition to play it convincingly is nothing but romance. Another example is Rory Block, a white female guitarist and singer who plays the SHIT out of those old Robert Johnson songs.
Swinin hard. Allen killed those changes.. He just.. sounds too classical I guess. No doubt a great player though. Great arrangement. But no one can swing this like Brownie.
However, I understand the controversy about someone referring to him sounding "too white" I do not directly agree with this statement nor do I have ill feelings towards the individual who said this, as people of different ethnic backgrounds do in fact sound actively different in their improvisation, as well as the way they accent certain notes. And yes black people do have a very desired way about their improvisation that cannot be even closely imitated by any one of a different race. Look at the race of all of the famous and most influential Jazz musicians.
+Richard Salvucci Then play a better solo than him and have better tone than him and play with The Airmen of Note. THEN, and only then can you criticize him.
Richard Salvucci I played with some alumniof this band. All good, versatile, swingi ng players. 2 others before my time you may have heard of. Steve Gadd, Ray Gomez. So, yeah dawg, you gots to be somewhat qualified to play in this band, or at least you did in 1968.....on the other hand i have a cd of theirs, and i skimmed thru it once.. just the thought of it yawn .zzzzzzzz...it's at Oxfam in Frankfurt, Germany if you want to pick it up for 2 Euro. hee hee but, drummer did NOT turn the time around. what brand of caffeine are you on? cuz i want some and, shit , it's a TRUMPET, and you want it to swing? dreamers.... hee hee hee
That trombone player is one of the best Ive ever heard! He will be famous someday if he isn't already.

Allen Vizzuti"s tone is clear and pure, one of the most unique and enjoyable tones Ive ever heard, good work Mr.Vizzuti

it means he ain't swinging bud
Sax player wasn’t messing around
yea, true. but i also love they way he'll shoot for notes he actually can't hit in front of an audience. wynton and some others great virtuosos won't. i really enjoy seeing that a lot.
@JazzTrumpetBlues since when are Italians not white? R they their own race?
he's already done that with Woody Herman
I don't see a single airman in that band.Should be called Sargeants of Note.

@972driftking There are many different races African,Italian,Hindu,Indian,Iranian. Not everyone is born here accept it.

he could do lead in a big band, has the range and sound, just these guys swing like a computer. and cant play much bop, or cool licks.
Allan Vizzutti is an amazing trumpet player but not a jazz trumpet player, he plays his solo like a "Arban Etude"...

Haha, race does not matter.
When you say something like that you’re limiting the reach that this music truly has it goes beyond a such silly boundaries like race
Vizzuti's solo doesn't really swing. Drummer turns time around behind sax solo. Hate to say it, but lame
"good enough for government work"

+JeffnasticsPVP Aw. I criticized your hero. Sorry

My apologies. I can't count. Trumpet player
This is cool, but I would agree. Vizzutti plays this like a white boy.
