hello, I have noticed in your video you listen to some translation podcast. If you haven’t already, can you make a video about translation podcasts or other online resources about translation in the future?
Localization is a completely different skillset to straight translation. After decades of translation, my brain just isn't wired for it. I've been asked to a few times, but my mental "Making crap up! Making crap up!" alarms immediately start going off. It's best left to a second person or team, but ONLY with the input of the translator to check their work and warn them if they're straying too far afield.
I don't think you can stray off "too far" when localizing. If you manage to convey a message that hits the target audience, that is all thats needed. Furthermore, I personally am convinced that a lot of translators will be doing good localizations for areas they are really familiar in (locally), not so much for areas they might just have moved to.
