That is the message. The message to me is that I really want to show them how much I accomplished but my parents don't see it and try push me to do what they want me to do where I don't have enough time to do what I want and I never want to ever continue what I do ever again and that I'm gonna just follow what they want me to be instead of what I want to be. I always just do everything to hear the 5 words from both of them, "I'm proud of you son." It's the one thing I want to hear before they die.

Fun fact ok orchestra ( the album my play goes into) is themed around like the instruments are the ones singing.... Which is what you hear in the very beginning

This song (like you theorized) is about divorce- specifically a child wanting to show their parents their play as a way to move on from the idea of them splitting up. “It’s gonna get really really really really bad before it’s ok [referencing the divorce process] but maybe you’ll forget it all while you’re watching my play.”
I highly recommend listening to Turning Out! (it’s by AJR from the click album) It’s another great one and has spectacular production

Personally i dont just see this song as a kid creating something and wanting to show both parent but there seperated and its not the same the second time. I see it as a metaphore for things like birthdays and christmas which are big for a kid and with divorced parents, you have to do it all twice, and i can say from personal experience that it kind of is like doing things twice. For example, half way through christmas going to the other parents house after lunch and its like it all starts again, another roast and more presents, or most like the day is happening again and sometimes it does feel like your putting on a play the second time, because youve already done it earlier that same day and then you do it all over again. But yeah, idk if thats what they were going for but that what i get from this song

  • @ashleethompson9787

awesome!! thanks for reacting! here’s some suggestions for the future!
if you like more upbeat sounding songs: burn the house down, karma, finale, sober up
for slower songs: turning out, normal !!

  • @AJRxTaylor

I personally think that the vocal effects in this song (like where they say “I just really really really really really wanna show you my play) reflects jacks voice being behind a wall, like him trying to get his parents attention, trying to distract them from divorce. It sounds muffled and full of emotion. That’s just what I’m getting from this song
