  • Between September 5 and 6, Amazon removed 20,000 fake positive reviews from its platform, but it is fake one star reviews that are now thought to be the new front of feedback forgery. Subscribe to our channel here: goo.gl/31Q53F
Amazon's marketplace is being abused by independent sellers using one-star reviews to harm rivals, Newsnight has been told.
Newsnight spoke to a number of those affected who believe their sales have suffered as a consequence.
Every year £23bn of online shopping sales in the UK are said to be influenced by reviews - which makes them and people’s trust in them all the more important.
Over the weekend Amazon removed 20,000 fake positive from its platform. But it’s not just positive reviews that are being manipulated - false one star reviews are now thought to be the new front of feedback forgery.
How is it affecting businesses on the platform? And how straightforward is it to remove fake reviews?
    James Clayton reports.

How difficult is it for Amazon to only allow a product review from an account that has actually bought the product! I've just checked and I can write a review on any product I like. That's crazy.

They do that on certain items such as Harry the royal's book which had attracted far right tabloid style hate reviews. Now you only can if you have a verified purchase. This should be the default for every product.

you can leave a review on a product that you havent bought, but if you have bought it, it puts verified purchase under the review.

TheHomeOfCreation I like this feature and consistently use it to filter reviews. I don’t think all the VP reviews are legit though. I‘m sure there are friends and/or competitors who buy up multiples of a product just so they can leave fake verified reviews. The cost would be negligible in comparison to traditional forms of marketing. 😕

Why have competition watch dog's not asked why Amazon do not display their own feedback? I actually blame the courier companies for allowing this as most seller negative feedbacks are for shipping related problems

Amazon should change the settings so that only people who have purchased an item from a particular seller are able to write a review. Simple!

    • @matthewyabsley
      @matthewyabsley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

It's not. If you are only getting reviews from a small pool of people who purchaded from your marketplace it won't get that many reviews. They do it to artifically look like mass amounts of people are buying the products from Amazon since they include anyone.

Surely removing the scoring is the best approach.

They should investigate eBay .. can’t leave a negative review it just refers u to seller then there’s the blatant counterfeit items and false descriptions....

I have put one star reviews a few times but I always explain why. If there are one star reviews without explaination then there is a chance that it might be fake.

"Some sellers believe there's a new tactic in town. Targeting competitors with fake negative reviews.."
New???? Jesus christ, BBC. Yes, it's called "sock-puppet reviews" and it's been around for the last decade, AT LEAST! How you're considered a serious broadcaster is beyond me. And that's not a fake review. You're crap! One star!

.It’s clear that Amazon should take some of it’s huge earnings and use it to fully police online reviews. And make it simple, any companies caught using such dreadful tactics are banned. Amazon do realise that good reviews reduce returns and thus increase profit. Reviews are the new shop assistant. Amazon needs to invest in its protection. Amazon have a lot of good people working for them so hopefully this will be improved. I rate this You Tube video at. *****. Not a fake score. Lol
