  • Welcome to Episode 3 of Mind the Game with LeBron James and JJ Redick. In this episode, JJ and LeBron talk about adapting and evolving with the game of basketball. Each of them discuss lessons they learned in high school that helped shape the rest of their careers. Next the guys talk about college basketball and whether LeBron ever wishes he could've played in the NCAA tournament / March Madness. Then the guys move on to talk about LeBron's first NBA basket and the way the game has changed from way back then to today. JJ goes on to discuss the impact of the 2009 Orlando Magic and why Stan Van Gundy's offense was revolutionary at the time. The rest of the conversation centers around LeBron's time with Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the Miami Heat. They talk through how the team recovered from the 2011 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks and Coach Erik Spoelstra's innovation that led to NBA championships and how Chris Bosh had to sacrifice for the good of the team. Then we take a beat to appreciate how Chris Bosh influenced many of today's big men like Bam Adebayo, Nikola Jokic and Chet Holmgren. This is such a fun episode so let's get to it.

      I admit now I've had the wrong impression of Lebron for years. Seems everything he does on the court is to win, with the clock running or after the whistle it's not straight-up unadulterated ego, it all serves a purpose. I didn't realize how many head-games are going on all at once for 4 quarters. I mean, mf'ers go off and do wild shit occasionally but the amount of games decided by a couple plays one way or the other makes all the little pieces essential, even sometimes pulling comedy faces arguing with refs on some straight forward call. • @HVBRSoF
      @HVBRSoF หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      honestly, I'd have used the letter "D" instead of O's so the kids can really avoid being confused and used O for offense. so D and O's instead of X and O's. and I'd be writing D1, D2, D3, etc to denote which defender, and O1, O2, O3 etc. to denote which offensive player.

    • @jaywinger79
      @jaywinger79 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think that that would be even more confusing because capital Ds often can look close to being Os, especially if they are drawn rapidly. So I think you need to have two contrasting letter forms that aren't remotely close to each other. Just my opinion. @@HVBRSoF

    Love this podcast. So much more info than I thought I needed to love basketball more. As someone who didn't play basketball, it really helped. I just wish though, there were several example of each play action snippets of actual games. The snippets that were shown were gold. But even more examples bring the point home. Even to have LBJ and JJ watch the examples as they talk about it... even more so would be mind blowing. Keep these podcasts coming.

    Like so many folks have said, this is the best basketball podcast out there. This is a reminder of when you were in the gym as a kid, barely able to even get the ball to a regulation rim. Trying to understand the rules, the tactics, the strategy of the game. The effort, the complexity, the beauty, that made you love it. You guys clearly love it, in the same way. Thank you for helping even those of us who have been basketball nerds for a long time be able to learn about the game in the same way we did when we were young.

Dirk under Rick Carlisle at spurts but they have Chandler or Dampier on the low black baseline (dunker spot) probably in 85% of their lineups. D'Antoni's Suns utilized Amare around the nail but he was never a 3pt shooter so they had space & pace but not w/ the corner 3's like Spo had Bosh sniping from the weak side.

It makes perfect sense why the international players are able to adapt to the NBA so much faster as they have these foundational principles that have been taught to them at a young age. I suppose it starts with things like this, so I appreciate the work you are putting in to share your knowledge with us. The way they emphasized the sacrifices that spacing bigs like Chris Bosh had made to revolutionize the game, and their basketball IQs to make plays (like Draymond), is genuinely astonishing. The sacrifices and IQ of spacing bigs, or super role players who compliment the team perfectly, are so often overlooked during this era where everyone thrives for the “bag” in 1v1 basketball. Just like Luka emphasized in JJ’podcast that better players are actually better at games of 5v5, not the “bag”. Credit to Bron and JJ for making this podcast so genuine and wholesome. @@Habib-I Also check out the Dunker Spot if you haven't. Way more X's and O's heavy but it's a must listen in the playoffs.
      To me if you listen to Thinking Basketball, Dunker Spot, JJ's pods with other players, and Simmons/Russillo (but only when they are together) it's like the four food groups of following basketball because each looks at the game through a different lens.
      - Analytics & big picture
      - Schemes & strategy
      - Insights and player perspective
      - Analyst perspective + all of Bill's theories and insights from watching games courtside
      Also Legler does a podcast with Adam Mares that is good.

    I love how JJ explains the different types of plays at the start of each episode..I was surprised how one type of play (e.g. pick-n-roll) has several different variations and which teams uses it. Then when I go watch a game, I suddenly recall what JJ was talking about..
