  • In this video, we'll learn about the basics of HEC-HMS. And for that, we'll do Muskingum Routing Method.
    HEC=Hydrologic Engineering Center
    HMS=Hydrologic Modelling System
    1)Open HEC-HMS.
    2)Click on 'File' and then New'. And give suitable name and location path.
    3)BASIN MODEL MANAGER:
    i)Click on 'Components' -- 'Basin Model Manager' --'New'.
    ii)Click on 'Basin Model' and then on Basin that we just created.
    iii)Add source. For that, click on 'Source creation tool' and mark it on basin model.
    iv)Add reach. For that, click on reach creation tool and draw. The first point of line will be upstream.
    v)Click on arrow tool and then, select the source and right click. Then, click on connect to downstream and select the reach.
    4)METEOROLOGIC MODEL:
    i)Click on 'Components' -- 'Meteorologic Model Manager' --'New'.
    5)CONTROL SPECIFCATIONS MANAGER:
    i)Click on 'Components' -- 'Control Specifications Manager' --'New'.
    ii)Go to sidebar on left side of screen and click on control specifications and click on 'Control 1' and adjust the date, time and time interval according to your data. The program will only run the part of data within this date.
    6)TIME-SERIES DATA MANAGER:
    i)Click on 'Components'--'Time-Series Data Manager'--'Data Type=Discharge Gages'--New
    ii)Go to sidebar on left side of screen and click on 'Time Series Data'--'Discharge Gages'--'Gage 1'
    iii)And on lower pane, click on Time-series gage, select suitable method of data source (Manual entry for this case),units and time interval for the discharge.
    iv)In time window, adjust the date and time.
    v)In table(next to Time window), enter the discharge values. And a hydrograph will automatically generated.
    7)Go back to Basin Models and click on Source and select 'Discharge Gauge' as flow method.And select the Gage 1 as discharge gauge. Click on reach-1, select INITIAL TYPE:DISCHARGE=INFLOW and give the value of K and X. If you choose number of sub-reaches more than 1, the program will divide the reaches into parts and do the routing.
    8)Go back to Meteorologic Models. Click on Met 1. We're not using precipitation. So, set None to Precipitation.
    9)Click 'Compute' on toolbar and on 'Create Compute'--'Simulation Run'.
    10)Compute the run.
    The values I computed in excel and that generated from hec-hms matches well enough.
