- Bhogi Pallu is a traditional ritual celebrated in South India, particularly during the festival of Sankranti. It is observed on the day before the main festival and involves the practice of throwing old items (such as worn-out clothes, old utensils, and unwanted things) into a bonfire. This symbolizes the removal of old and negative things to welcome new and positive ones.
In some regions, especially in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, people also decorate a tree branch (usually from a neem tree) with flowers and fruits and offer it to the bonfire as part of the Bhogi Pallu ritual. The event is also marked by gatherings of family members and the sharing of traditional sweets like 'puran poli' and 'tilgul'.
It's seen as a time of renewal and preparation for the harvest season.
