    I think the generalized question of "can you make a cat tutorial" is more so "can you make a tutorial showing how to convert correct anatomy into an art style that's easy to replicate"? With animation I know most animators aren't drawing every muscle on the cat body but certain key shapes can make animals read as they are without overdetailing everything!
    This is still a super helpful video!! I've been dying to see a character sheet breakdown for a long time!

    • @TennelleFlowers
      @TennelleFlowers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Oh yeah, I mean, that's the problem. I love making videos answering people's art questions, but they need to be more specific than: How do you draw x? Like, the anatomy question you pose here is a good one! Something I could probably actually make a video about. But unfortunately, I'm often left guessing what actual advice people need.

    Since this talks a lot about keeping the purpose of the character sheet in mind, I'll add that Peach's unposed turnaround was PERFECT for sculpting! It let me translate her proportions into 3D nice and easily. A posed turnaround like Pool's would have required me to make more inferences about things like how far forward his hair reaches in a neutral side view, if his cheek tufts angle forward or backward at all, and the effect of perspective on the length of his neck in your drawings. Those little decisions add up and don't always match the designer's vision

    I know I'm late, but holy heck this is informative!
    Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm working on designs for a story I want to do myself, inspired by warriors and your story Clouded Moon. I am changing it of course, lol. But I'm taking inspiration from both to create my own storylines. If that makes sense.
    This is an extremely useful video because I was clueless on how to handle character sheets in the past. I didn't exactly realise how difficult it would be to make one until I tried earlier having this video on repeat to listen to in the background. But, as you said, it's fun and satisfying to see the work pay off! ^w^
    I really enjoy this series, and I am so happy this was made into a drawing a blank. I remember you saying in the video where you spoke about unused concepts for the series that you were going to do one on how to host a MAP. The first part would have been about character sheets and designs. I was like "I would love to see that! Knowing what details topic in a ref sheet would be very helpful. But I understand why it got cut." And this morning I woke up to this being in my notifications!
    I know this is long, but.. if you took the time to read this Tennelle, thank you for inspiring people with all you do and giving useful tips and advice :3

    this is very useful and going straight into my save tag playlist! I've been working on making references for a variety of character designs, and I was pleasantly surprised to find I had already done some of the things you're recommending. my references consist of a side view of the entire body and a headshot (angled depending on whether I need to show asymmetry in the design) and I have notes on asymmetry where necessary. also I have notes about how some of them tie together bc I didn't bother with, for example, drawing a pair of twins when the main difference is that one has more floof than the other (I just drew the floofy twin and made a note that the other isn't as floofy). of course, these are only for personal use and I wouldn't dare ask anyone to animate the designs just from those sheets, haha

    You said to avoid adding non-design related information to the ref sheet, and while for the most part I agree with that, there are situations where this info CAN be useful.
    For example, art trades and Art Fight- generally situations where the other person has a lot of freedom in drawing your characters. All of my ref sheets have a very brief summary of what the characters are about, even though I could use the description or make a google doc. But most people don't want to read the whole backstory and lore behind every single one of my OCs. Summarizing a character in 5 points or less is great for making others interested in (or maybe even inspired by) your character, without overwhelming them with ALL of the information at once.

    • @TennelleFlowers
      @TennelleFlowers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For sure! Every situation is different, and my “rules” are merely well-educated suggestions. At the end of the day, you’ll know what’s best for your refs. 👍

    Hi Tennelle! Sorry I’m late to this video - I have a question for you, if you have the time to answer! 🥰
    I’ve started digital art recently and I use an iPad and Apple Pencil and Procreate. I’m finding drawing on a smooth screen pretty different to drawing on paper (I mean, obviously, since they’re quite different!) and I’ve heard of a Paperlike screen protector which is supposed to make the screen feel like you’re drawing on paper. Do you know if this is any good? I might try it out but am not sure what it’s like. ☺️💜

  • @PandaFoxArtist
    @PandaFoxArtist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Another thing to note for learning artists, it's OK to trace if you are first learning the subject. In order to draw the way you want to, you have to first learn /how/ to actually draw it. What draws the line, however, is not giving credit. By all means, trace as much as you want, especially if you aren't posting anything, but the moment you do post, ALWAYS give credit. Even if it's something like, "inspired by xx art style."

    • @testerwulf3357
      @testerwulf3357 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    honestly I find the idea of "tutorials" kinda dumb when it comes to complex things like cats, because at that point people shouldnt be telling people how to do that, you should be finding your own style to draw things. art is self expression so whats the point of people telling you how to do it?

      It's not so much telling people what to do but giving them inspiration to create their own version..tutorials can help with minor things like layout, anatomy, ect while it's up to the listener to take creative liberty on their own part to create something unique. Starting out with copying stuff isn't horrible, it gives you the basics on how to draw things before you stylize it yourself and create your own style of doing things
