- A walk in the North Western Lake District up to two of the lower Wainwright Fells Ling Fell (373m) & Sale Fell (359m)
The walk starts from the parking area at Brumston Bridge near the village of Wythop Mill which is next to Bassenthwaite Lake.
The parking area is an ideal start point as it is between Ling Fell & Sale Fell.
From the parking area we cross the bridge and walk up the road for a short distance until we come to a gate on the left hand side of the road. This gate gives access to Ling Fell.
We walk through the gate and follow the path straight ahead. This path is known as the Corpse Road.
We follow the Corpse Road until we come to a fork in the path. We then take the path on the left which heads up to Ling Fell summit. This is an easy path to follow and heads to the trig point on the summit. From Ling Fell we follow the path over the summit and down the other side of the fell . We then retrace our steps back to the bridge where the car is parked.
We turn right at the bridge and walk towards a gate which gives access to a track.
We follow this track which runs along the base of Sale Fell. We then turn left off the track and follow the path which leads to the summit of Sale Fell. The path climbs steadily until it reaches the summit of Sale Fell. The summit of Sale Fell has no cairn or trig point and is identified by a section of bare rock amongst the grassy top. We continue walking over the summit of Sale Fell towards the large cairn on Rivings. We then take the path down to the right and through Chapel Wood where we walk past the ruins of Old Wythop Church. From the old church we then follow the track back to Brumston Bridge where the car is parked.
Distance is around 6 miles
Lovely hike on two of my favourite fells!👍👍
Hi Anthony, it was a really nice walk on two of the lower fells. We both had a great day, although we didn't get our usual weather on Ling Fell, thankfully it did improve as we headed to Sale Fell. Thanks again for watching & commenting, it is appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
First time I think I’ve ever seen a raincloud in your videos Eddie! But still great views, particularly from the top of Sale Fell with the dark moody fells in the background and the foreground lit up in bright sunlight. Lovely! Thanks and all the best to you both 👍
Hi Peter, we were disappointed with the weather as we neared the summit of Ling Fell, but thankfully the weather did improve as we headed over to Sale Fell. This was a nice walk on two of the lower fells and we both enjoyed the day. Thanks again for watching & commenting, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Hi Eddie great video must be 10years ago that we done these two fells brought back good memories cheers Eddie
Hi Brian, thanks. It was a nice walk doing the two fells together. A quiet part of the Lakes, we hardly saw anyone all day! Pleased it brought back some good memories for you. Thanks again for watching & commenting, it is appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
I did these last year and they were a lovely walk. Super walks
First I have seen clouds in your videos!
Hi, It was a nice walk on two of the lower fells. We were disappointed the weather changed as we got near the summit of Ling Fell but thankfully it did improve as we headed to Sale Fell. Thanks again for watching & commenting, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
A brilliant look, as always, at a couple of 'gentle' fells. Bringing back very happy memories of that route up Sale Fell with my late wife and even taking a photo of her at the exact spot near the start where you look back down the track. Glad the weather cleared up and returned to the normal Eddie and Carol sunshine. Hope you have some special celebrations when you complete the 214!
Hi Martin, thanks. It was a nice walk on two of the lower fells. Pleased it brought back some happy memories of when you went up Sale Fell with your late wife. We were disappointed in the weather as we approached the summit of Ling Fell but thankfully it improved as we headed over to Sale Fell and we got our usual nice weather back! Thanks again for watching & commenting, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Hi guys. I did these as part of a longer walk earlier this summer parking near Scawgill bridge, Whinlatter. I have to say the mile between Graystones & Ling Fell was probably the wettest I've known anywhere. These 2 fells were great & probably best done from your start point. Sale Fell in particular being so grassy is a local dogwalker's dream. The views from both were fabulous as you captured. Another great video, Eddie. Cheers.
Hi Michael, sounds like a good walk you did there. I remember when we did Graystones, it was fairly steep heading up. This walk up Ling Fell & Sale Fell was fairly straight forward and as you have mentioned, nice grassy paths. The parking area & start point was ideal as it was in between the two fells. Thanks again for watching & for the positive comments, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Nicely vlogged Eddie as always, two great small fells that probably no one would visit if they weren’t wainwrights. Atb Karl 👍
Hi Karl, thanks. This was a nice walk on two of the lower fells with some nice views. We hardly saw anyone on the walk, like you have mentioned, very few people must visit these fells. Thanks again for watching & commenting, it is appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Been a few years since I did these 2. (I think quite early on in my 214).
So lovely to see them again.
I recall them as lovely, easy fells but maybe a little plain compared to others.
A great video as always and a delight to watch.
Have a wonderful Xmas when it arrives and a lovely New Year to both you and Carol.
Hi Alan, thanks. It was a really nice walk on two of the lower fells. We had done Sale Fell a few years prior to this walk but for some reason missed out Ling Fell, so we decided to do them both to make a day of it. We both enjoyed the day, despite the weather changing a bit on Ling Fell. Have a nice Christmas & Best Wishes for the New Year. Thanks for continuing to watch the videos and taking the time to leave comments, it is appreciated. Take care & all the best from Carol & myself.
They are nice fells to do as a pair. Interesting the route you took up Sale Fell. I go left immediately after the gate but it is steep though! Your route back from the top of Sale fell was lovely. Thank you for your great video.
Hi Geoff. Yes I agree, it was a nice walk doing the two fells together. The parking area next to the bridge is spot on as it is right between Ling & Sale Fell. We might try going left immediately after the gate the next time we do these fells as it would cut out walking along the narrow road. We really enjoyed the route back from Sale Fell heading through the woods past the old chapel. Thanks again for watching & commenting, it is appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Morning Eddie, Carol, when the wind and the rain started I was getting concerned, do the weather gods not know who you are! 🤣
Obviously a stern look up to them though and they thought better of it and it came nice again. Some stunning views are to be had from the hills in the northern fells. Those two have yet to do and funny enough I have had that route plotted for ages in OS maps but I never seem to get round to doing them. Maybe over the course of the winter.
All the best guys
Dave
Morning Dave, yes we were gutted when the rain and wind started on Ling Fell, but as you say, the weather gods changed it for us and it turned out a nice day, although still windy! It was a really nice route and the parking area is perfect as it is right between the two fells. Another nice walk on two of the lower fells. Thanks again for watching & commenting. it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Nice one as usual Eddie atb
Hi Pete, thanks. This was another nice walk on two of the lower fells. It was really good doing the two fells together with the car parked between Ling & Sale Fell. Thanks again for watching & commenting, it is appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Been up these 2 fells 3 times and yet to get a view . There's 7 that owe me views. Nice to see the view on your video .
Hi Ian. We didn't think we would get a view as we got near the top of Ling Fell as the weather changed to wind and rain
( yes you heard that right, wind & rain, ha!) but thankfully the weather improved a bit as we headed over to Sale Fell. A nice walk on two of the lower fells. Thanks again for watching & commenting, it is appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
