Hi DIY divas!
I'm very excited about today's DIY Summer sewing tutorial as it's the first time I succeeded to sew pants without the weird lines around my crouch. Managing to sew pants have been my biggest challenge so far and even though I dreamed of sewing many pants in the colors of the rainbow there was always one obstacle until I found a trick that worked for me.
Instead of sewing 4 pieces which is how you usually sew pants I cut it in two large pieces and sew them that way. And it worked! So today I'm happy to present my DIY Palazzo pants tutorial. Palazzo pants are one of the hottest fashion trends at this moment and the flowiness of the fabric makes it perfect for the Summer. On the beach, in the city or at a party with a cropped top, I know I will be wearing mine lots and sew many more!
What you'll need:
- 1 yard of stretch fabric (I used lycra fabric)
- pair of wide legged pants for the 'pattern'
- thread
- pins
- fabric scissors
- wide elastic band
- sewing machine

This is a great video!. I work as a manger in the trucking industry. I'm pretty small and have had so much trouble finding work pants that are durable, business casual and flared at the bottom so they will go over my steel toe boots. I modified your idea in this video to make pants with a slimmer leg but still boot cut. I'm a novice with a sewing machine so it was essential that the pants were simple and easy to make. They turned out wonderful and now I make all my own work pants with whatever fabric I want. Great job! The instructions are clear and easy to follow
Joyce, I can't thank you enough for helping me break out of my sewing disappointments! I am very new and have a wonderful machine and have poorly made things with a pattern because its hard to understand how to lay patterns out. Just watching you get these pants done and beautifully inspired me to try your awesome easy technique of no pattern! I literally made 3 pairs of Pants for my family and myself in one day!!! That's with the time I took selecting my fabric at Joann's! I actually had zero anxiety about what fabric I needed! I am making clothes for when we move to Guam. It is so hot there and I really wanted to make beautiful island boutique looking outfits and the Palazzo pants came out fabulous and chic!! I'm struggling a little on the waistband with the elastic. I've been looking for a good tutorial on making this type of pants for a very long time and I to have trouble sewing pants. I love my clothes comfy and colorful and being on the heavy side it's hard to find clothing to suit my style and pocket. Many thanks for taking the time to share your talent with us.

I just found your page yesterday and I have already made my first pair of palazzo pants! I love them. My legs are wide just like I like them and they feel great. I did run into an issue with the waist band, but finally figured it out. I loved doing this without the frenzy that the patterns causes me. Thank you!

I just googled how to make these, and your video came up. My goodness, you make it look sooo easy!!! My mom has been sewing for a living for 40+ years, and she's still in the mindset that you need to buy a pattern for everything. I'm going to show her this video!! I'm plus sized, and in England, there's not much to choose from clothes wise, and the good stuff is too expensive. So going to make a couple of pairs of these for our holiday! Thanks sooooo much for posting this!!! :-D
Emma Peach Omg that's amazing! I rarely buy clothes now because sewing is so much cheaper! And if you're plus size you can create fab clothes for yourself. I often times find plus size less sexy than other clothes :(

Love these pants back in the 70's. Wish they would sale them in petite too. I don't know anything about sewing,my mom did all that when I was a kid. Oh well.

My daughter always wants a pair of palazzo pants but she's in between sizes (she's thin with long legs) so we can never find any that fit one way or another. I'm so glad I found this tutorial now I can make her a bunch of them that fit her like a dream!

I think zigzag stitch would be better for the belly band. Great tutorial !
+Iris G. Yeah but if you stretch the fabric the straight stitch basically becomes the zig-zag stitch and if someone has a piece of crap machine that breaks needles unless you use a simple stitch, this is a great trick.

I followed this video and the result was impressive! I am still fairly new at sewing and I was a bit frustrated that I was eye-balling it with no actual measurements. Thanks! I learned this in sewing class. When you place them horizontally you can sew over them. Makes sewing so much easier!

I have several polyester stretchy pants very similar to that in a variety of prints, and I ABSOLUTELY love them. One pants fits me especially well, so I will be looking for a seamstress to copy it in several colors, using the same type of fabric.
