Good motivational video. Having come back to MA 2 years ago after a 35 year break, I can relate.
I think what you say about consistency is key. 5 times a week is great, but at a minimum, a beginning student of MA should be training twice a week, and an intermediate to advanced student, 3 times a week. If you can do it more, that is great, but less than twice a week is, IMO, not enough to get better. This is because most MA classes these days are just an hour or less, rather than the 90 minutes to 2 hours we did back in the day, there really isn't enough time to practice the entire curriculum plus warm ups and physical fitness. I have seen this at my school. We have 5 things we do in my style of TKD. Basics, sparring combos (practiced against a heavy bag, paddles, or as partner drills), one steps, forms, and free sparring. The once a week, or once in a blue moon person might not practice one steps or free sparring more than once every couple of months, which is not enough repetition to get even minimally proficient. The worst case scenario are people who start to forget their lower belt forms because they haven't practiced them enough to maintain muscle memory. (and you had better believe our instructor will include at least one or two lower belt forms at higher belt tests just to see how well the student has retained the curriculum. Or worse, make the student do the lower belt form either blindfolded or "to the right" (most of our forms start with the first move to the left).
I see a lot of folks struggling to maintain consistency in their training. You see them for awhile, then suddenly they disappear for 2 or 3 months. Or they only show up maybe once a week, until a belt test is just a couple of weeks away then they are there 4 or 5 days a week trying to cram months of curriculum into a couple of weeks. Or they are all in for 6 months, suddenly not at all, then you hear so and so is " taking a break" because (insert excuse here). I think for some, it is a matter of not instantly achieving their goals, then quitting when they realize what it will actually take to get really good at MA.
One of the benefits of traditional martial arts and the whole belt system is, the curriculum is broken into bite sized chunks, so you don't have to guess what you need to work on. But one of the challenges I see is, after they pass a belt test, there is a tendency to slack off for awhile, not coming to class as often, or not at all, then suddenly realizing another belt test is around the corner and not only have they not learned the new belt material, but have actually regressed because they haven't kept up with their training.

i fall out of training for a while because med school, it was hard coming back to training but it was actually pretty good, i dont regret falling out of training because i learned medicine, i became a phisics nerd etc,.... once i got back i understood better what i was doing, my technique good way better, etc... it was hard at first, my kicks werent as powerfull, as fast, my defenses were awfull, etc etc... but as my knuckle conditioning i took it slow, and started training more and more, now i understand how i kick, my moves, other people moves, i sometimes cross spar with friends etc.
falling out of training doesnt mean you stop being a martial artist, as long as you learn smth in life it can help your art too, and viceversa.
take your time and enjoy what you do

Every Week, I do 1 Stretching session, 1 Abs, 1 upper body weights, 1 lower body weights, and 4 to 5 Striking Sessions. It is good to have Training Blocks, like Mr. Dan says. That way, even if you have to miss a day for family/work reasons, you still know which training block you need to perform next..

This is great advice about that martial art life!
    I do Kung fu!
And I recently had an awakening about the styles we practice!
I used to think we did Northern styles, but then a guy who also trains in Kung fu, said I did some Southern stuff!
And for a while I was shaken, but now I realize that Kung fu is Kung fu, no matter where it came from!
And now I want to add some other arts to it!
I could even make up new animals or just say "This is MMA Kung Fu or Taekwondo Kung fu" or something!

This past September I went back to training after about 15 years out. I used to run a dojo, before starting a different career. Everything you just said is correct. ESPECIALLY about how your body is not going to be the same as when you were younger. My advice to anyone, take it slow, get the rhythm down. You're not going to be the person you were when you left, but you'll get there. My 15 year break from karate and reasons for disillusionment with my school...
I was unable to attend a grading event and was subsequently held back until the next grading... which was fine but when I had another conflicting schedule event that meant that I would be held back again maybe a year later, as my school offered no opportunity to grade independently from the "grading days" that they held and so being held back 2 kyu grades to someone I had trained with since day 1, trained exactly the same and was just as proficient in our art... it upset me and I decided I wanted time away or to find a new school... that never happened.
But back at it now!! Amazing the muscle memory you retain!?

I had a really bad back injury shortly after I got my black belt (entirely unrelated to training).. and then we had some kids. 10 years later, I started to get back into it as I had my (then) little girl training. I had also gained a lot of weight and lost any of the little flexibility I might have had. It took me over two years before I had enough shape to dare to attend the black belt class - never mind trying to remember the forms. It was just like re-starting. Slowly, surely - and more painfully slowly, I eventually got my material back and earned a 2nd degree. I am approaching 50 and am in better shape both physically and mentally than I was at 40 (though that bar was quite low... ). I’m writing this with sore arms and legs from a long bb workout yesterday and a happy spirit.

Great video! I stoped training martial arts since last February and strength an conditioning because of my work schedule. I try to read about the subjects and do some mental imagery once in a while. I do just one cardio session a week, usually a 3km run. Its a temporary situtation. My goal this year is not lose muscle mass, increase my stamina to where it was a year ago and keep reading and visualizing. Its probably gonna take me more than a year to start training gradually like I want to (martial arts, parkour and strength and conditioning), because of more important goals that require me to work more to make the money that I need. I hope I dont have to stop training so long again, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices.

Heading back tomorrow night after a few years out. Thanks for the perspectives. I left due to a summer long trip and some drama happening while I was out of state that caused rifts down the school. School took over and college right after. It went very well. The class was a good size and the instructor was extremely involved in everything. Hes actually on the USA national team for poomsae. It was pretty obvious just from talking to other students that he was really putting the class through the ringer last night, and we were all joking about it being my fault. After my trail he invited me to join his school and then surprised me by giving me rank again. I wasn't expecting anything because every time I have started over I was given a white belt but he gave me red. I had achieved a black belt in Taekwondo before and he asked about my background before class which is why I suspect he really pushed everyone last night. I have a lot to relearn and tweak more to his style but I'm very excited to be back and make sure I re-earn that belt he offered.

Hello Sensei Dan what a great way to commence the year of 2020, with such a great video. New Year resolutions as you mentioned, are a great motivation and inspiration, to aspire to. However as you said we need to be sensible, logical, wise and realistic about them.
We need to take into account our academic studies, work, family and personal responsibilities, into account to see if we can dedicate our time to our training. Not to mention as you have already stated, our age, our physical abilities, injuries, as well as how long we might have been a was away from our training, be it months or years.
Indeed as we age into the more senior, as well as the more advanced years of our lives, we do not have the endless amounts of energy of our youth, to be throwing infinite, acrobatic kicks and so forth. So like you said we need to be more grounded, conserve our energy, be more economical, as well as use better and wiser strategies, that can get the job done with a single or fewer strikes, when sparring with our younger opponents.
The older you become, the less quickly our bodies recover from fatigue and injuries, compared to our teenage, twenties and thirties years. So indeed we need to be more acute and in tune with our bodies, capabilities and limitations. If one is getting back into the martial arts, as a new year resolution, it is wise to research, try and shop around, to be able to find a martial arts style, suitable to our individual needs. It is also important to find a great school, with an excellent group of students, as well as an equally, formidably, outstanding master. I myself have come across rude and abusive masters, as well as their equally obnoxious students.
For me personally a very strict, traditional, stern and yet humble, caring and respectful master, is what suits me best. Along with equally dedicated, highly disciplined, yet benevolent and friendly students, is the preferred dojo. Excellent advice as always Sensei Dan, all the best to you and all of your Art of One Dojo subscribers. Happy New Year and the utmost best for this 2020, Osu!🇦🇺🇲🇽🥋👍✌😊👊
