      It was an awesome day! Those smallies really like hiding under the grassy banks on this river. It's a blast fishing them out of those spots too when you can just drop the jig in front of the grass and you see a nice smallie dart out and slam it! I did pretty well on this trip but the fishing will only get better for the next 4-6 weeks. I can't wait to hit this spot again in September when they're in fall feeding mode!

    none of the rivers i wade would be good in a kayak or boat but i sure like the consistent size of your fish,,chunky smallies up your way,,we gotta do alot sneaking to get in on big smallies but they can be monsters coming up out of slot limit protected Dale hollow lake you never know what you might hook into if their over 6 or so its usully downstream freight train and hope your hooks dont bend,,but im ultralight everyday,,getting too old to wade these dangerous rivers or fast fall areas,, and its hard for two to get in close unless the water is perfect like 10 minutes into a thunderstorm,,that can be great and a bit dangerous in the right river.

      It’s a St Croix Legend Tournament bass rod, but I believe they quit making that short one a couple years ago. I’m not thrilled with their current LT lineup, they did away with the three 6’8” casting rods I’ve always used which two need to be replaced after years of river abuse but I don’t want to send them in when they don’t make anything under 7’ any more.

    Hi NDYakAngler. Another impressive video!! That stream smallie was amazing. I hope I can trouble you with a few questions. This spring I am buying a kayak. I narrowed it down to an Old Town Predator or a Tarpon 120. I have decided on the Tarpon 120 because it is much lighter and sleeker and I don’t plan to stand much to fish.
    My question is about paddling upriver as you have described in your videos. I like that idea because it avoids the need for a shuttle. I live in southwestern Ontario and the river I fish the most looks quite similar to the one in this video. It has some areas with class 1 and 2 rapids. I have been wade fishing the river for 3 years and I have never seen anyone paddle upstream-everyone seems to drift downstream.
    I was wonder how difficult paddling upstream is in the rivers you fish? How often do you have to get out and pull your kayak along the shore? What distance are you able to paddle upstream and in what sort of time? I am just trying to get an idea if this would work in my local river. Thanks! Sorry for the long comment.

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cruising speed for me in my kayak is about 4.5mph. The rivers I fish the most flow at 1.5-2mph so if I'm just paddling upstream I can cover 2.5-3 miles in an hour. I stop and fish a lot though so really I could spend all day working my way 5-6 miles upstream. I think the farthest I've ever paddled upstream was about 8 miles. I don't have any experience with paddling upstream against any real rapids but I'd imagine you'd probably have to get out and pull the kayak through some of those spots. The areas I have to hop out and pull the kayak through are spots where the current speed picks up because it gets really shallow and rocky. The main problem I have is that it's too shallow to get a good paddle stroke in without smacking rocks with my paddle. I'd recommend bringing a 4-5ft piece of rope or anchor line you can pull through the front handle with a carabiner on the other end you can attach to your belt, it makes pulling the kayak through those spots so much easier.

    • @misol123s9
      @misol123s9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will definitely get a pull rope and carabiner. It will take some time to figure out how best to fish the river in a kayak but it will be a lot of fun. Looking forward to it! Thanks for the info.

I run Abu Revo MGX reels on all the spinning rods and Quantum Smoke SL100HPT reels with aftermarket carbon fiber handles on all the casting rods.

  • @JohnVC
    @JohnVC 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome video! Reminds me of wade fishing for shoalies down here in Georgia. How are you capturing audio while wading? Are you using your zoom H1 mic? I like GoPro with head mount for wading but audio is awful, as I'm sure you know.

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Scott! I use an ATR-3350 lapel mic mounted on top of the GoPro and run that to the H1 to record audio. The Hero 5 I've been using this year has much improved audio quality over the previous generations of GoPros but the lapel mic still does a little better job.

      NDYakAngler
      That's helpful to know, thanks! One other question if you don't mind. What is your approach to synching audio and video tracks in editing? Premier Pro? Plural Eyes? Manual?

    • @ndyakangler
      @ndyakangler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use the multi track editor in Adobe Audition to sync and trim the audio clips manually. I'll make a copy of the final video with the stock GoPro audio and strip the audio from that video to use while making the replacement audio track so I have something to visually line up all the H1 clips. Once I have the replacement track done I'll go back and mute all the GoPro audio in my video editor, toss in the new audio track, then I'm ready to export a finished copy of the video.

They have been my favorite fish since I was a kid though, they're just so wild. I've learned some new techniques as well watching your vids, your clear heat shrink trick on the Senko is the bomb. Thanks man! Chasing river smallies is my favorite way to spend a day! I seem to get a better hook up ratio with those EWG hooks. The Gamakatsu hooks I use are made with some pretty thin gauge wire and don't have too big of a barb so they're great for getting a good hook set with the 10lb mono I have on most of my reels.

    Wow those are some chunks! I can only wish I had water like that to fish. I guess ya just gotta adapt to what's around you. Thanks for sharing it.

    You are truly unreal, mate... LOL At the 9:50 mark, I said to myself "If he pulls something out of that shallow water, I'll eat my boots." LOL Guess it's leather for dinner tonight. Well done; nothing but love for this channel...!!! 😎

    Picking the one out of the fallen trees at about 12 minutes. Killer way to hunt him up! 🎣

      By the way i use to live in fargo and moorhead back when i was 18yrs old my first boy was born in Fargo.is this river around that area?

      Thanks Randy! I'm from Fargo too, this spot is a quick drive into Minnesota lakes country. The MGX reels are great, I've been running a few of them for the last couple seasons and haven't had to do much maintenance to them to keep them working like new. The only thing I'd recommend keeping an eye on is the allen screw that holds the body of the reel to the stem, I've had them loosen up a couple times.

    Many, many summers ago, in a 6 week period in Northern Wisconsin I was able to perfect this same pin-point casting accuracy w/my Mitchell 300 & St. Croix rod. On the day I arrived @ camp, I found an Arbogast Frog-Jitterbug sunk in the shore mud. I dug it out & it was my go-to lure the whole 6 weeks! Under an osprey nest I was lucky enough to tie into a few nice largemouth, but only 2 years ago did I ever catch my 1st smallie....I'll be 76 in Feb.

Lol u opened my eyes man, i see and learned there are a lot more places i need to be lookin into and casting towards! U earned another subscriber brother! Respect ✊🏼💯
