Sand is still used for traction today on every locomotive. Even on the lastest, state of the art, 7000+ horsepower computer controlled monsters, a tablespoon's worth sand is still needed to improve metal on metal traction.
Wonderful Video ! The Panels in the front of the Boiler on the left and right are actual wind guide planels. Their purpos is to guide the wind aspecialy at higher Sspeeds over 80 km/ houre to prevent that the exaust fumes of the locomotiv are pushed down on the drivers compartement ans taking away the Engineers sight.
Great build, Sim! Did I miss an episode ? I don't remember you building the cab or the boiler. ??? I've got something to share with you. Back in the early 50's, I was a small boy and my Grandpa was the Railway Express agent. His office was in an 1890's railroad station. When I played cowboys and Indians I played there and the office still had it's Wells Fargo marked cabinets. But I digress, what I just wanted to give a basis for my advice. When you paint the wheels, only the flat part of the wheel that touched the rail was bright fading to grunge covered rust on it's inside. A military train would be kept in top condition and clean and bright. Feright cars wheels would be rust fading from the edges to the center. And covered with a black/brown grunge. I'd recommend using my method for doing the worn metal of the wheels. I have used a product called Rub-n-Buff, a thick paint. You can use a Q-tip to apply it or a finger tip. I'd top this with some graphite for the metallic look.
Ennis you miss one th-cam.com/video/lG9wpaanIq0/w-d-xo.html I have a similar product from AK called true metal you can put this on and then buffet afterwards almost to a shine but I'll give it a go and see it goes and thank you for the advice many thanks Sim

Your eccentric crank on the left side is in the wrong position. Looks strange to my eye, and in real life it would prevent the locomotive from running properly.
Smoke deflectors - at high speed they create and updraft to carry the smoke up and over the locomotive cab. Fitting them or not is up to you. I know there are a couple of people who go on rants about them not being on wartime locos, but there is no proof that none of them were fitted.
The deflectors are there to prevent smoke getting into the passenger carriages being pulled by the engine, so they were used in wartime but only on passenger trains, cargo or munition trains didn`t need them.
The deflectors work only by higher velocity. There is more then 60 km/h (=37 miles per hour) needed. Goods trains rarely reached this velocity. Therefor the deflectors are not necessary. But if the loco runs without any wagon, the driver and fireman missed them. In days after WW II the engines all get deflectors called "Witte-Leitbleche".
There is a mistake on the left side. Look to the wheels. The excenter must show to the big balance. On the right side it is ok. Sorry i dont't know the correct technical names.

Did you buy any upgrade resin parts for this?
