I just got these yesterday. I am amazed at the stereo separation and clarity. As for I Am The Walrus. The ending bit was nuts! I'm hearing stuff I've never heard before So, yeah I loved it! . I am really impressed with Ringo's drums on both sets.
Old Brown Shoe's bass was played by George. In a 1987 interview for Creem magazine, however, Harrison recalled that he was the bass guitarist on the track, rather than McCartney. When the interviewer, J. Kordosh, suggested that the bass part "sounds like McCartney was going nuts again", Harrison replied: "That was me going nuts.
I love the extended versions my only complaint probably would be on the Red Album would’ve replaced George’s cover of “Roll Over Beethoven” with his own first song he wrote “Don’t Bother Me” and i strongly feel we could’ve used another song from “Beatles For Sale” instead just having “8 Days a Week”, i wouldve added “No Reply” or “I’ll Follow the Sun”.. it bugs me a little how “Beatles For Sale” is regarded as one of thier worst albums…🤷 i love it! BTW.. don’t you mean the “WALRUS in the room”? 😄
Really enjoyed your commentary on the Red and Blue remixes. The one thing that always bothered me about the early songs of the Beatles was that Ringo's drums were low in the mix. It's one of the reasons he was underappreciated as a drummer. The remix on the Red Album corrects that. Listen to a Hard Day's Night, or Eight Days a Week. His drumming on these songs is phenomenal. And his drum work on Nowhere Man is exquisite and surprising, especially on the fills and kickdrum. It turns out he has quite a musical foot on some of the patterns he played. Ginger Baker eat your heart out. Ringo had so much more finesse, creativity, and power behind the drum kit than most people realize or give him credit for. Just an absolutely incredible song drummer of which he has no equal.
I wish I was born 10 years earlier to be able to experience music (& life!) in the 60s as a kid,to be able to listen to The Beatles as they progressing, and 70s as teen with the disco stuff!
The bit I miss the most right at the end of 'I am the Walrus' and why I'll always like the original is that the BBC radio 4 fade out (which is what it is) features a radio play of King Lear and you clearly hear the actor saying 'Ohh an untimely death!' which I see as the fitting the end of the song. The new version has taken that away😮💨
The red and the blue albums for me were the introduction to all the Beatles music after I’ve heard them on the radio for several years I have been a Beatles fan since I was 11 years old and I just kept buying all the Beatles albums which were great I did get some of the Beatles albums in their catalog. I remember buying the ring issued red and blue albums from 1993 a few years after I came out at Fred Meyer‘s and I got a chance to buy it again at Music Millennium I can’t wait to buy the remix expanded versions which will be great.
Same. Christmas 1975. Got the Red set for Christmas and a few days later, I bought the Blue set with the money I got from Aunts and Uncles etc. Life changing. Thanks for this clip. Cool.
CORRECTION: "I Am The Walrus" was remixed before - on the "Love" record. Do yourself a favor and listen to it with headphones. It is faithful to the original, but is greatly enhanced. IMHO, it is so much better than the Blue version. Also, regarding "Hey Bulldog", check out the updated "Yellow Submarine" Soundtrack version. As a matter of fact, that soundtrack has got great versions of a lot of the tunes.
I am the Walrus was also remixed for the first DVD version of the Magical Mystery Tour film. They obtained a tape of the King Lear broadcast from the BBC for the remix, but the quotes are "off time" from the original mix. Also: Yesterday was remixed for the Yellow Submarine Songtrack, and sounds similar to what we have here. The multi track stage tapes of the string quartet and the multitrack of McCartneys' voice and guitar still exist, so all they had to do was synch up the strings with McCartney.
I have to admit, I did not like the remix of "I Am The Walrus". After repeated listens, however, I've come to appreciate it more and more. Then I did something I never do - I listened to it through headphones...........and IT BLEW ME AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely amazing new mix!!!!!!
I think that overall it was a great job. Among the highlights new mixes : I saw her standing there, From me to you, Yesterday, Day tripper, Magical mistery tour, Girl, The fool on the hill, .. The low moments : She loves you ( muddy, lifeless, treble sound arecgone) . This is really clear when i listen it after From me to you (songtrack order) , Old brown shoe(weird mix, bass over mixed, George's voice too lox...) and I am the walrus ( horrible mix, from the bridge it becomes in mono and they destroyed the ending)
The snap at the beginning of "You Can't Do That" had me going crazy! I can't believe how they separated Ringo's drums. These mixes are worth the listen...
Still have the Red 1963-1966 copy I bought at Woolworth on Warwick Blvd. in Newport News VA in 1973. I only had money for the one at that time. Why I picked the Red one, I don’t remember. I had already had the "Hey Jude" and "Magical Mystery Tour" albums at that time. So I had a lot of the the songs on the Blue one already. It must’ve been an economic decision. Since I have them already, as well as, red vinyl Japanese pressing, and a German blue vinyl pressing, I haven’t decided if I want the vinyl on this. Perhaps the CDs.
i would’ve subbed out rain for you really got a hold on me, but other than that i’m so impressed by these collections. the new mix of i am the walrus is absolutely my highlight - the drums and vocals absolutely MURDER, and i adore how loud they cranked the radio sample sound collage at the end!! it’s like a mini revolution 9, which i can understand might turn some ppl off lmao. this song has never sounded more experimental and bizarre, and i love it
It’s crap. Can’t even hear the bass. Those things that are highlighted weren’t meant to be highlighted. You’ll see, in time it will sound like shit to you, I’m sure.
No, there was a stereo remix of Walrus for the MMT DVD (also for Love, I think). I am really shocked by the new Walrus mix. In the past, Giles Martin said that he was basing things on the original mono mixes. This pulls in a lot of sounds from somewhere else. I suppose that these sounds were somewhere on the original tapes.
I love your reviews and comments and can't wait for the other albums to be remixed. But I'm getting nervous that with the box sets we're looking forward to will we also get the singles as they have now been included on these albums?
The Red & Blue albums were how I first heard their music in 1981 then 1982, but was only after John Lennon’s death. I only heard “Ain’t She Sweet”, the summer before and that was off a Polydor album that had the Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers tracks on it. Listening to these remixed sets, I was totally blown away. It was as if I never heard their music before!
I’m just, now, watching the video, here, jumping between the chat on the iPad and playing the tracks being mentioned on the phone (have already blasted it out at home). Totally diggin’ the remix work. I expected an interesting and new stereo balance, was not prepared for being able to hear the musicianship so clearly. Great stuff. One thing I wanted to point out, if it wasn’t already, that the James Bond intro at the start of Help, was only included on the American release, originally, not the UK versions. That’s for both the Red album and the Help lp. Cheers, all.
John Lennon was quoted on The Blue Album 1973 mix saying they turned Revolution into a piece of ice cream and after this new 2023 mix I think he would feel the same way. I don’t think it’s bad but I don’t think it beat out the mono 45 even with this effort.
Re: Help! The Vic Flick James Bond lick wasn't put on the Brit version of the original Red album either. Weirdly enough, on the US Albums box, they grafted it to the "86 CD master. and the Mono mix thereby creating two more variations of the song.
The James Bond intro should never have been put on there in the first place. It has nothing to do with what The Beatles originally recorded for the single and album so it's little wonder that it wasn't on the original Red album either.
I like all the songs except Within You without You, as I have never shared George's interest in Indian music. But I agree that Paul's bass was the best thing about the remixes. I go way back with the Beatles, I actually recorded the Ed Sullivan appearances on a Sony reel-to-reel in 1964, and listened to them probably 1000 times before they were ever available on CD. And from the first song on the first appearance, All My Loving, the bass just jumped out of my Emerson 19-inch black & white TV. Most TV shows just had singers lip-syncing to the record, so hearing the Beatles actually singing and playing live, and being GREAT at it, was amazing to my 15-year-old ears. To hear great bass on these remixes really brings a smile to my face. The only other comments I have is that She Loves You was disappointing, I'll stick with the original mono version for in-your-face vocals; and A Hard Day's Night opening chord was somehow diminished on the remix. it just doesn't have the power of the original. I remember seeing A Hard Day's Night in the theater for the first time, and the opening chord just about knocked us out of our seats....
TJ my Beatles experience mirrors yours. My mom was big band, Frank Sinatra era. That was my music growing up. My older cousins liked the Beatles but all I really remember are the huge ones like She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand. Fast forward to 1980. John is assassinated. For Christmas my cousins give me the Blue album. The vast majority of the songs were brand new to me. My birthday is in February and I bought myself the Red album. I was a junior at the university of Pittsburgh and there was a used record store on campus. Over the next few years I got the entire catalog on vinyl, many of it on Apple, and most of all their solo albums too. I no longer have a turntable so I won't be buying these but if I did I would buy them on colored vinyl. TJ, you are my favorite music content creator and I love everything you do. Keep up the great work you are the absolute best. Your fan, Mike Zinza
For the most part, I really loved the new stereo mixes on the Red album & the few new stereo mixes from the Blue (mainly Magical Mystery Tour period) "Hey Jude" &" Revolution." It was a new listening experience as you heard things you didn't hear before. The mixes didn't work for every song like "I Am the Walrus." The vinyl packaging is shoddy stuffing two records in one sleeve. They should have added "If I Fell" & "Rain" and omitted one of the cover songs. If you have the 2014 analog pressings of the Red & Blue, I would still keep those.
I look at this remix of I Am the Walrus the same way I think of I Want You (She's So Heavy). On the latter, the white noise eventually overpowers the music, and it was done deliberately. That was something John wanted. He remarked that Paul must have thought it was Revolution #9 all over again. I think Giles Martin went for the same effect on I Am the Walrus. Disappointed with Old Brown Shoe. Where's George's guitar? The mixes of All You Need Is Love and Hey Bulldog from the Yellow Submarine Soundtrack are superior to what's on the new Blue album. As for the Red album, where is Rain?
Meet The Beatles was my first.... than the White Album...1967-1970... were my first Beatles..... My Dad said the same....Big Band Music and Sinatra was his music 🎵🎶....i believe he was pulling everyones leg!!!
The James Bond intro was only available on the Capitol version of the Red album. It also had the added reverb on I Feel Fine. I think Capitol used all the US mixes on their Red album? I remember the US versions even had Red and Blue Capitol labels.
Great video guys. My experience was pretty much like Roberts. I was 5 when The Beatles were on Ed Sullivan and had 4 screaming older sisters. So we had all the music that was on the Red Album but almost none from the Blue. The Blue album was my 1st official Beatles album as a birthday gift in 1973.
On A Limited Budget - Red Or Blue For Now. For those of you who want to pick up both Red or Blue albums in CD or Vinyl format but a limited budget means you have you cannot purchase both at once here is something to consider in choosing the first purchased. As for myself I am going with Red because out of the 38 songs on it, 30 of them are 2023 remixes. The rest are the 2022 Remix from the Revolver album that is on this collection. The Blue album has only 5 2023 remixes. The rest are remixed selections from the more recent anniversaries reissues of their albums. If you do not own any of the anniversaries reissues and like their later period music more than the earlier years then you might want to go with blue. If you do have those reissues albums as I do then Red is the bigger gang for the buck for more recent remixes. I hope this has been helpful. Cheers everyone. :)
Wow, your hitting exactly the songs I singled out ! Yes DAY TRIPPER is really improved and the drums really benefit the most on all the early ones…and I AM THE WALRUS is the one after first listen I DON’t like, I feel it was a BIG mistake to do the ending like that and Harrison’s rhythm guitar is buried even more than before throughout.
I am the Walrus, best mix ever, in my opinion. Let's not forget If I Needed Someone and Old Brown Shoe, which are Rock Songs now !!! Every song a 5 star Winner in my opinion.
Great job, guys! Ive ordered them but haven’t yet received them . I know you didn’t go track by track but was wondering your thoughts on the mixes of the very early Beatles, ie, You Can’t Do That, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, I Feel Fine, I Saw Her Standing There, etc
Have an update on She Loves You and Old Brown Shoe. She Loves You in Dolby Atmos doesn’t seem to suffer from the distortion (quality) like the CD and regular HD version on streaming. I actually find the Atmos version to be an enjoyable listen. Also, Old Brown Shoe in Dolby Atmos doesn’t suffer (as much) the absence of the guitar feeder at the 30 to 40 second mark like the CD and HD streaming versions. This is very bizarre. Therefore, for a proper mix listen to those two songs in Dolby Atmos only. That being said we need better quality control here…
I think the new mixes are great except for a few - "She Loves You" is a bit messy. I have a demixed stereo version from the internet that sounds so much better. I think the drums on "Day Tripper" seem to be lost in the middle. "I Am The Walrus" is a disaster, mainly the second half. The best remix of Walrus was done for the blu-ray release of the movie. The 2015 remix of "Get Back" is used here and that also buries the drums.
Thanks again Robert and TJR. In general, I love the Giles Martin reissues (especially Let It Be and Abbey Road) but sometimes I don't (Revolver and The White Album). In this case most of the older remixes are a revelation that is intriguing to listen to. Especially the Rubber Soul, Help and A Hard Days Night material, really shines. I think most Beatles fans are now even more looking out for the upcoming reissues of older albums. I also wonder if this kind of new technology will play a part in the Mind Games box set, that is said be released in june 2024. Can it for instance better the highly praised 2002 Mind Games remix? At first, the new I'm The Walrus remix was a shock and I didn't like it. But the more I listen to it, each time it's getting better. From the blue album, the Magical Mystery Tour stands out for me, besides the Pepper, Let It Be and Abbey road songs. I still highly prefer the 2009 stereo White album remaster. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the White album mono mix is not for everyone and the Giles Martin remix is more based on that format then the original stereo version. That is kind of the red line I guess: if you like the mono mix of a certain album, the chance is there that like the Giles Martin versions, because the balance is somehow going to the mono side, instead of stereo. Some people claim that Abbey Road did not need a remix at all. I disagree: listen to songs like Oh Darling and Maxwell Silver Hammer and you'll hear that those songs are brought to another level. To this day, I still think that Abbey Road is the biggest improvement. It's hard to improve an allready good sounding record to a mindblowing level. Giles Martin did this. I personally can't wait what he and Peter Jackson are up to, because they obviously handle the Beatles legacy in the best way possible. And if someone does not love as much as I do, there are still the older remasters and Yellow Submarine Songtrack. We can choose and pick what we want (to hear). ~Marjet
The Yellow Submarine LP has a different version ( intro) of All You Need is Love. There is a studio version of " Nothings Gonna Change My World originally avail on a Various Artists LP ( later on Past Masters CD) why can't these be included? I have all the Beatles LPs and singles so in 1973 I felt I didn't need the Red and Blue album. ( hey- they have a red, white and blue album!!)
Great hearing your thoughts. Overall I'm loving the new mixes, BUT I had gotten so accustomed to the 2015 stereo remixes (from 1/1+) that a few tracks actually felt jarringly drum and bass heavy this time around, stuff like "Help!", "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out". I think they will grow on me with time though! The 2015 mixes feel more "v-shaped". Think I'll compare three versions of Walrus on streaming: 2009 stereo, 2023 stereo and 2023 Atmos (Even if your device can't play back proper Atmos I think they may actually play with a bit more dynamic range? At least according to Parlogram. Should be interesting either way though).
Like yourselves I really like the Red album remixes, especially all the Rubber Soul tracks. But its the clarity and the separation that makes these tracks stand out and, now we have true stereo mixes without so much panning from left to right. Over here in the UK I have found over the almost fifty years of being a Beatles fan that on the early Beatles singles and albums that the drums and the bass seemed to be buried a little in the mix, whether that was because of compression and only having between two to four tracks to record on, and that they were only recording in Mono back in the day, but now we have clarity and sharpness in the Fab Four's rhythm section, especially on a track like Day Tripper. My only gripe with the Red was the omission of Rain, but that's just my personal choice. The blue has always been my favourite of the two sets, that being that I have always been a fan of the later period stuff, but I like this edition of the album and I have loved this mix of I am The Walrus from the get go, the moment I heard it I just thought wow. I cite the original mix from '67 as The Beatles leading the way again and being the first band to use sampling on a record with the radio broadcasts they tuned into the mix, the BBC radio broadcast of King Lear in particular. And that guitar on MMT. I swear I'd never heard that before, but it must've always been there. Hey Bulldog sounds great, not entirely sure why Within You Without you is on here, I like the song but didn't really think it fits on here, I'd have preferred to have It's all too much with the extra verse at the end that was on the Yellow Submarine movie. But these are albums that I'm going to be listening to for quite some time to come. My early impression is that we now have The Beatles in HD Musically speaking.
i don’t see why they just couldn’t let “Back In The USSR” just sync into “Dear Prudence” on the CD since they were both on there. Seems like a waste to me. Yes, give it a clean start on the vinyl record but on the CD🤷 you might as well keep “Back In The USSR” and “Dear Prudence” together.
@@derekroberts6654 I like it better with clean intro if I only want to hear that song. That way if you want to put together a CD of mixed songs the option to add Dear Prudence with the clean intro is there, instead of the faded in version with the airplane sound.
I don't think the James Bond opening has ever been included on any UK release. At least I've never heard it and because of that Guess that I'd have the reaction you have to it being left off, but if it had been added on. If that makes sense...
I agree the Red was mixed amazingly for the most part. I felt She Loves You needed a lot more treble and is muddled compared to the original mono version. That being said every other song on Red was incredible. I Saw Her Standing there the guitar solo could have been louder due to Ringo Starr’s drums being so loud in the mix. Other than that the Red was pure bliss. Now, onto the Blue. Thank God the prior Deluxe mixes were used and only a few tracks were used for the d mixing process for the Blue. The later tracks can be remixed without the d mixing process and only 1966 and older should be d mixed. I Am The Walrus is a mess. John’s voice and the ending are questionable. Also Old Brown Shoe unfortunately highlights the guitar flaws now in greater detail especially with headphones. At the 30 second mark the guitar drops off. Quality control 🤔😢. I’ve always loved the remixes because to me they sounded better. I can’t say that about She Loves You or I Am The Walrus or Old Brown Shoe. Usually Giles is spot on. I guess they all can’t be winners 🤷🏻♂️. But Giles could have done a regular remix on these later songs. Lastly we did get a I Am The Walrus remix on Love in 2006. Although part of the song was actually changed. Listen to John Lennon’s voice on that. It’s pure bliss.
Spot on. Walrus was trashed, for sure. I was thinking the same on Old Brown Shoe as well. And did Giles add even more reverb to George’s solo on I Saw Her Standing There? It sound thin and distant.
@@HoneyPie18319 I liked I Saw Her Standing There, but felt the guitar solo should have been louder due to Ringo’s drums so in your face. That being said I still feel it’s better than the original. I Am The Walrus/Old Brown Shoe aren’t. She Loves You could have been had the treble/vocals been pushed more to the forefront. Thank God Giles didn’t remix the other remixes using the d mixing process.
Only dissapointed about the muddy and distorted sounding vocals of She Loves You that were already much clearer in the 2015 1 mono mix. The squeaking door sound in Yesterday also made a comeback that was also already removed in the 2015 1 mix.
I am the Walrus...is best on the 2009 mix.is great....i want more stereo effect....so when U play it though a surround sound system....on the new one it is not there
My CDs are supposed to be here any time now. I listened to a few songs here on youtube, I Am the Walrus, being one on the Blue Album I was the most interested in. I was looking forward to a clean new stereo mix. This had to be the one Giles decided to experiment with. I did not like it.
Guys, i agree about some of the later tracks on the "Red". Some ARE a revelation. But the earlier songs - the 2 track recordings before 1964 - are a MAJOR disappointment for the most part !! Songs that are muffled, poor EQ, have next to no separation, narrow stereo, no elements in one channel, glitches, distortion. The Beatles deserved better.
The D Mixing technology should only be used when necessary for pre 1966 songs they can’t remix. There is no reason to not do a regular remix like the deluxe box sets (Sgt Pepper, White, Abbey, Let It Be). Those deluxe box sets sounded FANTASTIC remixed. If this had occurred I Am The Walrus, Old Brown Should wouldn’t have come out quirky. Thoughts? Listen to the guitar on Old Brown Shoe (30 seconds in) 2023 Mix, it’s a mess compared to the original. Giles could have done a regular remix for this instead of the d mixing. Anything past 1967 does not need d mixing. Use headphones and you’ll realize what a train wreck it is. That being said these days all I listen to is the newer mixes so this is really disappointing.
The 2 cover songs on the red album is perplexing..rain and no reply would have been better imo and I don’t get why they used muffed lyric version in please please me for stereo remix but I’m not complaining..just an observation
The Red Album is very impressive. The only dud on it is "Eight Days A Week", the song really lost its punch. I would have swapped out Roll Over Beethoven and You Really Got A Hold On Me with I Wanna Be Your Man and possibly Baby's In Black or I'll Follow The Sun. The omission of Rain was perplexing as well ( I would have swapped I'm Only Sleeping with Rain)
As a 67 year old who grew up with The Beatles, I though The Red album was amazing all the way through. My only complaint is the omission of "Rain". Why left that off is a real head scratcher. As for the Blue album there are only 2 things that really bothered me. First being "Revolution" & not separating John & George's guitar's in stereo. Second is "I am the Walrus". Unlike you 2, I thought the overall mix worked pretty well, the ending on the other hand, just plain sucks! Back in the day we'd all get super stoned & be singing along with the ending. Cutting the vocals makes no sense at all to me. As a funny side note, we always thought they were saying "Smoke pot, smoke pot, everybody smoke pot". lol. Just my quick 2 cents.
I'm extremely disappointed in the 2023 remix of Revolution. I saw the Vegas Cirque show Love in 2019 and was blown away by the sound... bought the CD and Revolution was...well, revolutionary! The 2 distorted guitars were seperated left-right - 2 disticnt parts!!! The Beatles presented as a modern day rock band! WHY did Giles Martin revert to the fake stereo that John Lennon himself hated???? I have never seen a band set-up live with the drums on one side of the stage and 2 guitars plugged into one amp on the other side. Ridiculous!!! I am SO disappointed - I've been scouring reviews to see if this was done on the other new mixes...noone else seems to care!?!?!?!? I don't think I'm going to buy these as a result...
I think it is a pity that the voices remain a little recessed throughout the albums. Feeling immersed in a recording is all about being closer to the voices.
The worst mix of "Hey Bulldog" I've ever heard. I'll stick to the Yellow Submarine song track. At least the guitar solo and vocals are more present on that version
Lets see, are the remixes good? A handful are nice. “I Want To Hold Your Hand” is the best on the red. “She Loves You” sounds as dull as dishwater. Look, if you want the best sounding go get the EP Collection and listen to “She Loves You” off of the Million Sellers EP cd in that set. MMT, I guess if you like the song sounding like a Chuck Berry song with Georges guitar yanked up into the mix, ok I Am The Warlus? Eep, terrible how they trampled all over the strings with the radio chatter at the end. Old Brown Shoe? I have no idea what they were thinking. Terrible remix. Revolution- Why not separate the guitars? Go listen to the “Love” remix and tell me which is best? Nowhere Man- I guess if you want the snare and cymbal out of synch, sure. And yes it IS out of synch making Ringo sound like he is an amatuer drummer. Come on Giles. Rly?? The packaging should have something to designate this is a remix on the gatefold Should be a trifold instead of wedging the third lp in the second part of the gatefold. Cheap ass Apple. Come on. The song flow sucks, its all over the place. And the additions/ subs are questionable. Weird choices to include a few of these. Go listen to and do a match up visual analysis of the hi hat and snare on Nowhere Man. Its out of synch. They need to fix the latter before putting out Rubber Soul remix album. If they dont, it shows me they dont give a crap.
I Am the Walrus is a horror show of a mix. Total trash. Completely ruined. Same with Hey Bulldog. Unlistenable amateur-hour mixing. I Saw Her Standing there is crap too. These three songs in particular are not worthy of a Beatles release. The rest of the new mixes aren’t fantastic- some good, some not so good.
!!! NO MORE DEMIXING FOR PSEUDO-REMIXING - demixing means still second or third generation tapes and computer tricks - IT"S NOT SOUND FROM FIRST GENERATION TAPES !!! - Please Please Me sessions on bootlegs still sound much better. Why nobody asks Steven Wilson to do it ? There are good remixes of a lot of albums - and I like the idea of remixing from original first generation tapes without too much other unnecessary job / corrections - like Steven Wilson does it. Why don't they talk to Mark Lewisohn ? - or do they ? How easy can sb may make sb else a fool - too many reviewers I'm afraid repeat the narration from the production team - is it wise ? Examples : I AM THE WALRUS '23 - couldn't the remixing staff try to find the original King Lear recording in the BBC vaults ? REVOLVER - maybe I am wrong here - but - is it really true that they need to use computer programs to do a good job to make better separation of instruments, voices - demixing for remixing (!?) - as far as I remember f.e. from M Lewisohn's book - still exist the first generation tapes and takes that were used for "bouncing" to another tape with reduction of tracks to mono or stereo (this way engeneers were able to use two or more tracks on a new tape) - so there are kind of two masters - one original attempt, master take, and the tape onto which it was copied - I guess we don't need super duper pseudo-modern sound ! - what we need is the best possible SOUND FROM THE FIRST GENERATION TAPES, even if some instruments, voices are on one track - who cares ? However - I see that the idea of putting the evolution of songs somehow is now applied on this new box coming - I wrote about it in my comments before. Demixing squeezed sounds from one track DOES NOT bring us to first generation tapes / sounds ! Also - there is no feeling of a band together now in my opinion. Where are the clear drums now from Got To Get You Into My Life ? And Taxman - the version on one of the session discs has background vocals in both channels, panned between speakers (like done on Yellow Submarine new mixes) - beautiful - so why not on the new mix of this song opening the album ? Couldn't they remake-remix TNKnows into a kind of mantra lasting f.e. 7 or maybe even 9 minutes ? The WHITE ALBUM 50th Anniversary is wrong in many places, maybe apart from the two original discs remixed - only when I consider the much better sound, natural, but also with mixed emotions - Birthday remix with voices now compressed to the centre - the fun was in the voices on the sides, in the speakers. It is cheating fans and drawing money from our pockets - there should be an additional disc (nr3) including final remixex/mixes of Hey Jude, Inner Light, Not Guilty, What's the New Mary Jane, Lady Madonna, Revolution (single ver), full fast version of Helter Skelter leading to Ringo's shouting "I have blisters on my fingers," also could probably include You Know My Name since recording sessions span 1967 - 69, also Hey Bulldog (recorded with Lady Madonna) - like on Sgt. Pepper's 50th - there are final mixes of Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane, the session discs could include two/three versions of Sexy Sadie, Not Guilty, and others, showing evolution of the songs, and not the same as on the Anthology series (including the same versions as on Anthology is really not fair), also are we interested in instrumental versions ? - NOT in J. Lennon's voice ? And why Not Guilty is repeated from Anthology without a proper final remix - it still sounds as a session - the modern technology allows to create a final mix out of fragments, snippets, in case of Not Guilty there are around 100 takes, many probably false-starts, abandoned, also in different keys - but it needs some time and working on it. The next time they return to White Album will be in around 20 years - me dead. Sgt. PEPPER 2017 remix - for me it's a crime to have sped up She's Leaving Home, and also - the whole colour and magic is gone with the band and other instruments squeezed to the centre now - "stereo based on mono" as they say - lunatics at the consoles ! ABBEY ROAD - sounds great BUT why Ringo has soooo long hands now ? - my speakers are circa 2.5 metres apart, so I hear drums on the right in Come Together, and suddenly the snare is now in the centre - again - insanity. Why do bootlegers have access to better stuff ? - You Never Give Me Your Money (very long version with improvisation, poor quality, but interesting (probably take 30)). Why have we lost chance to have better quality "Because" vocals only version. Why there aren't masters without strings like f.e. "Something" - would be really interesting. TAKE THIS GUY GILES MARTIN AWAY FROM IT ! - the only professional at remixing classic albums who I really respect is Steven Wilson these days - he has done GentleGiant, JethroTull, Yes, KingCrimson, Marillion, TangerineDream - well done, good job. I doubt if there will ever be a better sounding RUBBER SOUL album compared to the George Martin's 2009 remix. ENOUGH OF THIS SHIT MADE AND TOLD BY GILES M. But I buy and listen to the products - what else can I do ?
..... Seek psychiatric help? Lay off the meds for a bit?....You seem a bit wound up and all over the place. By the way Giles Martin followed the proper Sgt Pepper mono mix notes to produce the 2017 stereo version. She's Leaving Home is now at the speed they originally wanted. But if your happy with your crappy 1987 or 2009 cd remasters(Not remixes) complete with instruments coming out of one speaker and vocals out the other that's fine.
@@scottandrewbrass1931 the Beatles decided that the speed of SLHome to be slowed down I hate it being sped up - probably problems with hering somebody has - and poor equipment
It's incredible how Ringo sounds in these mixes. He hit those drums incredibly hard... a beast!
Yes! My biggest takeaway from the 2023 mixes is how great Ringo's drums sound!
Agree, "Don't Bother Me" is a stronger Beatle track than "Roll Over Beethoven." Thanks for checking in!
Yep. Don't Bother Me would have been a good early George song. Also, No Reply and I'll Follow The Sun should both have been on the Red.
I love BFS too! But it seems we'll have to wait for its complete remixed edition.
Beatles for Sale is a wonderful album
What about changing it to Do You Want To Know A Secret, an actual hit and on streaming way more popular than the other George tracks
New version takes a lot away from that songs. Horrible mix.
It’s been mentioned but I Am The Walrus was remixed for the Love album and it is far and away the best version out there
Same. Christmas 1975. Got the Red set for Christmas and a few days later, I bought the Blue set with the money I got from Aunts and Uncles etc. Life changing. Thanks for this clip. Cool.
Thanks for watching>
The James Bond intro on Help! was on the American red album, not the UK.
also on the the Capital " Help " soundtrack. Do you know if it was on the original single?
@@davidgreenberg5517Not on the proper British version.
You guys are babies. I am 73. I watched the Ed Sullivan show. I was 13 1/2. I grew up with them but unfortunately I never saw them live.
Remember the Beatles before the break up in 70. The red an blue albums are still must haves. All their albums are.
Hi guys. I'm surprised you didn't mention the stereo remixes of Love Me Do and She Loves You. Those are big breakthroughs.
Great in depth analysis. Thanks!
I’ve never Heard Help with a James Bond intro and I’m nearly 63. Maybe because I’m from the UK.
I have been told (since posting this video) that it was only on the American pressings. This as something, I had not heard till yesterday
George Harrison played the bass on Old brown shoe my friends...
I think I SAW HER STANDING THERE is the best remix of the entire red and blue albums, it sounds so energetic and exciting.
i would’ve subbed out rain for you really got a hold on me, but other than that i’m so impressed by these collections. the new mix of i am the walrus is absolutely my highlight - the drums and vocals absolutely MURDER, and i adore how loud they cranked the radio sample sound collage at the end!! it’s like a mini revolution 9, which i can understand might turn some ppl off lmao. this song has never sounded more experimental and bizarre, and i love it
It’s crap. Can’t even hear the bass. Those things that are highlighted weren’t meant to be highlighted. You’ll see, in time it will sound like shit to you, I’m sure.
TJ iam with you the new beatles red album is glorious thanks for the great video
Loved 🥰 it ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The previously used Giles mixes get a slight upgrade too because the overall compilation gets mastered to streamline the sound etc.
Technically I Am the Walrus has been remixed before on the Love album. That's probably more enjoyable to me than this new version
Thanks. I had forgotten about the “Love” album.
@@TJRtheOriginal "Love", still the place to find the best version of Revolution.
By far. New mix is useless to me.
Thanks for the video! Enjoyed your takes on this release.
Glad you enjoyed it! We appreciate you watching.
Were you guys listening to vinyl or cd versions? I have vinyl. Thanks for the review.
The James Bond intro was only available on the Capitol version of the Red album. It also had the added reverb on I Feel Fine. I think Capitol used all the US mixes on their Red album? I remember the US versions even had Red and Blue Capitol labels.
The James Bond intro was originally only on the Capital " Help " soundtrack - I don't know if it was on the original single.
@@davidgreenberg5517 Yeah, I meant as far as the red album goes. Capitol took the song and the intro from the album.
@@davidgreenberg5517It wasn't and it shouldn't have been put on there in the first place.
Actually the end of ‘I am the walrus’ sounds like Radiohead,, to new generations it’s going to be great
Well said. Exactly !
Where’s the friggin’ bass, too!
That being said we need better quality control here…
👍
I had to have the 4 CD "Red" and "Blue" slipcase edition. I kind of regret it now, because I have to wait a little for it.
Dear Prudence has a clean intro on this too, like A Day In the Life.
i don’t see why they just couldn’t let “Back In The USSR” just sync into “Dear Prudence” on the CD since they were both on there.
No it's addition was a Crapitol decision. Nothing to do with The Beatles.
I'm disturbed that "Nowhere Man" doesn't have the reverb on the vocals.
Isn't it "Oompah, oompah, stick it up your jumper" ?
That too
I heard it was “Everybody smoke pot”..😄
MUCH better.
Oh my, with Now & Then no 1, they are gonna need to release 1+ again. It will be a cash grab,
The Red Album is very impressive.
Old Brown Shoe and Walrus were both ruined!!
MMT, I guess if you like the song sounding like a Chuck Berry song with Georges guitar yanked up into the mix, ok
I Am The Warlus? Eep, terrible how they trampled all over the strings with the radio chatter at the end.
Old Brown Shoe? I have no idea what they were thinking. Terrible remix.
Revolution- Why not separate the guitars? Go listen to the “Love” remix and tell me which is best?
Nowhere Man- I guess if you want the snare and cymbal out of synch, sure. And yes it IS out of synch making Ringo sound like he is an amatuer drummer. Come on Giles. Rly??
The packaging should have something to designate this is a remix on the gatefold
Should be a trifold instead of wedging the third lp in the second part of the gatefold.
You're absolutely right!
On nearly every track on the red album the percussion is mixed way too loud, maybe even the drums in general too.
You're absolutely right!
I did not like the ending of I Am The Walrus. Something very wrong there!
Both albums stink - with the exception of maybe 10 songs total. Some awful sound throughout.
Examples :
I AM THE WALRUS '23 - couldn't the remixing staff try to find the original King Lear recording in the BBC vaults ?
@@scottandrewbrass1931 I report violation of the YTube rules
@@scottandrewbrass1931 the Beatles decided that the speed of SLHome to be slowed down I hate it being sped up - probably problems with hering somebody has - and poor equipment
