Vangelis - The Bounty (Opening Theme)

  • This is the opening theme from the 1984 film, "The Bounty", directed by Roger Donaldson. The film is based on one of most notorious scandals in the history of the British Royal Navy - the seizure of the HMS Bounty by a group of rebellious crew members in 1789. The crew members had apparently become a bit too friendly with the natives of the island of Tahiti, and refused to leave.
The film stars Sir Anthony Hopkins as Lieutenant William Bligh, the Bounty's commander, and Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian, Bligh's best friend turned lead mutineer.
"The Bounty" breaks with some of the conventions established by previous takes on the incident. Traditionally, Bligh was portrayed as a cruel, sadistic tyrant, and Christian as a brave freedom fighter.
However, this film offers a more sympathetic (and realistic) view of Bligh as a verbally abusive but otherwise quite progressive ship's commander simply trying to do his job. At the same time, Christian is given a less sympathetic (and, again, more realistic) portrayal as an opportunistic social climber. In other words, while Bligh was traditionally the villian and Christian the hero, "The Bounty" essentially reverses these roles or at least blurs the distinction.
The greatest break with tradition, however, is the film's haunting, synthesizer-based "space music" soundtrack composed and performed by Vangelis. Despite much demand, however, the soundtrack has never been released on CD, although the opening and ending theme were included Vangelis's 1989 soundtrack compilation, "Themes."
The video itself consists of an animated sequence from an old NASA documentary depicting the formation of the Solar System, combined with some artist's renderings of the formation of Earth in particular. This is the first time that I have included actual video footage in one of my videos.

When I sat down in the theater in North Carolina in 1984, I was looking for an afternoon diversion, I was like "ho, hum, another Bounty movie."
Then Vangelis' music started, and I knew I was in for something special.

I've always felt that there is " just something " about this film that reaches into your mind. Vangelis music, just astounding. Acting standard, Hopkins, Gibson, Neeson - all top oscar professionals. Directing, first class. Script, great.
Also, the beauty of the location and the girl who played Gibson's love interest was a natural lovely looker.
This film should be looked upon as a classic.

My father suffered a mental breakdown after working decades for the NYPD. We escaped from him and his violence when I was 7. I visited him two decades later. He was living alone on a small sailboat in a Florida swamp. He wanted to show me some of his things from that time just after our escape. He had kept for all those years on his tiny boat a little castle and moat I had made in kindergarten. That and many other things from our childhood. He then showed me his badge and police ID photo from that time. The time he was living alone with his madness. This song was playing as he showed me. I'll never forget the look in his eyes in that photo, bright yet lifeless orbs glaring into an abyss.

Haunting, very haunting. Though as beautifully haunting as it is ominously haunting.
Eerily brilliant, and spooky, music such as this activates certain primal and visceral instincts, unnerving the soul YET at the same time unleashing these warped, mystical sensations that reside deep within.
Music such as this is powerfully nostalgic, ominously breathtaking and spiritually captivating.
Definitely touches something deep within, all while smoothly and rhythmically vibrating with this enigmatic, spellbinding foreboding. LOVE IT!!

You're talking about a 1984 movie... that's about an 1789 event. I'm sure you meant vastness, as it is the largest ocean, and quite scary. Vangelis captured it just awesomely!

    • @ThreepwoodForest
      @ThreepwoodForest 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The vastness definitely, but I also hear the chains of Imperial dominance that clatter with their persistent greed and lust for bounty.
The piano section is the shimmers of sunlight that caress the mysterious islands that harbour natives still virgin to the iron Imperial grip.
The menacing background music I agree is all the vastness of endless ocean

I have a bit different opinion. The British Fleet had harsh discipline on board but what Blight introduced was over the bearable by any humans limits.Post-partum trial cleared Blight of all accusation but as a matter of fact what the jury had option ?Making Blight guilty opened door for disputing commander position on board and endless trials for Admiralty.
They preferred to side with Blight and close the case.Anyway blight reputation as commander was tarnished and his carrier was broken forever.
This voyage for Blight was a honourable duty. For Christian and some other on board just a duress.Blight did not feel the mood of the crew and got what he earned.
Anyway he made excellent navigation and saved all his crew being with him in the boat. That deed made him famous in navigation annals .

"The British Fleet had harsh discipline on board but what Blight introduced was over the bearable by any humans limits."
What exactly did he introduce that was over the human leaders? The tyrannical portrayal of Blight in the older movies was mostly fiction.

That was the first place it showed up. Supposedly there was a limited pressing of the entire soundtrack, but never anything official other than "Themes."

@Scifimaster92 And by the way, I didn't mean to be rude or anything, so I apologize if it came out that way.
Oh, and if you like, you can check out my video for the end theme, which consists of space images up until the end, at which point an image of a sailing ship (actually the HMS Bounty itself) appears. This is intended as a "flashback" of sorts to the early days of exploration.
