  • GM Matthew Sadler and WIM Natasha Regan explain how AlphaZero - DeepMind's general purpose artificial intelligence algorithm - thinks, trains and plays chess.
In this video, we examine the AlphaZero Winawer French, or rather AlphaZero's unusual and very interesting plan for White on move 10 against Stockfish. It opens a new chapter in the highly topical and razor-sharp Poisoned Pawn variation of the Winawer French. The German grandmaster Niclas Hucsenbeth used AlphaZero's idea to defeat 2700-grandmaster Arkadij Naiditsch in a crucial game at the FIDE Worldl Cup in 2019.
Matthew and Natasha's new book "Game Changer" came out on 20th January 2019 and won the prestigious ECF Book of the Year and the FIDE Book of the Year prizes for 2019! The Game Changer chess book is available in print and digital versions from these links:

Matthew Sadler is a Grandmaster and 2-times British Chess Champion, ranked 41st in the world and 2nd in the UK on the December 2019 FIDE Rating List. He is the author of 7 chess books, 3 of which - The Queen's Gambit Declined and Chess for Life (also co-authored with Natasha Regan) and of course Game Changer! - won the prestigious English Chess Federation Book of the Year Prize.

    AlphaZero revives (invents?) a virtually unknown idea against the super-sharp Poisoned variation of the French Winawer : 10.Qd3! It put Stockfish under great pressure and sets Black new and difficult problems. Interestingly, GM Niclas Huschenbeth credited this video as the inspiration for playing 10.Qd3 against super-GM Arkadij Naiditsch at the World Cup 2019. He won the game and the match! He even won with AlphaZero's favourite opposite-coloured bishops :-) The game is below: 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 Bb4 4. e5 c5 5. a3 Bxc3+ 6. bxc3 Ne7 7. Qg4 cxd4 8. Qxg7 Rg8 9. Qxh7 Qc7 10. Qd3 Qxe5+ 11. Ne2 dxc3 12. Qxc3 Nbc6 13. Qxe5 Nxe5 14. Ng3 f6 15. Bb2 Kf7 16. Nh5 Nd7 17. O-O-O b6 18. Rg1 Bb7 19. g4 Rh8 20. f4 Rh6 21. Be2 Rah8 22. Nxf6 Nxf6 23. g5 Rxh2 24. gxf6 Nf5 25. Bd3 R8h7 26. Bxf5 exf5 27. Bd4 Ba6 28. Rg7+ Rxg7 29. fxg7 Be2 30. Rg1 Bg4 31. Re1 Be2 32. Rg1 Bg4 33. Re1 Be2 34. a4 Kg8 35. Kb2 a5 36. Ka1 Kf7 37. Rb1 Rh6 38. Rg1 Kg8 39. Rg3 1-0

You are going to cover all 1,000 games (TC 180/15) that were played in the big match, no? *fingers crossed*
Seriously how many games/positions in the book? Altho I suppose I can uncross my fingers and Google it.

If it is one thing that could be said about AZ0's style of play, it's mobility! Actually, I have begun stressing mobility & (the related concept of) space more and more with my students, as I want to see more people playing the way AZ0 plays (= with harmony)! AZ0 respects its DSB in the French Winawer and also wants to create more space / mobility with h-pawn pushes. The title of your excellent book, "Game Changer," is actually quite apt! BTW, I have toyed with 10. Qd3 in blitz before, but now I think I have a good reason to play it :).

Thanks! Yes 10.Qd3 is a really nice idea: at the very least, something completely fresh in this line. There were a couple of very interesting Winawers too in the Lc0-SF10 match recently (games 91 and 92) Well worth seeing!

Woah it would be awesome if DeepMind releases an opening book with AlphaZero's openings!

Indeed... but there is a surprising amount of information in the released games! Lots of ideas in various openings and some pointers as to the variations and types of structures it prefers. We have a lot more planned on this channel so watch this space :-)

    Grunfeld Idea
6:33 This idea of f4 was seen in
    So, Wesley (2754) ½-½ Carlsen, Magnus (2875) 7th Norway Armageddon, June 2019.
This video was released in January 2019, so I am guessing Magnus was aware of this idea, hence he used it in this Armageddon game versus So.

Amazing video! This is wha t I'm curious about! Also, will you make video's about AlphaZero's first choice openings? Of course we have seen how it crushed the Queen's Indian Defense and that it uses the King's Indian Defense with black, but I am so curious about how he reacts to other openings/defenses.

Hi, thanks for your comment! We are planning to do quite a few videos about all sorts of openings played by AlphaZero. It's just finding the time! Looking at some Queen's Indians at the moment, and we'll try and cover as many as possible! Best Wishes Matthew

Why do you talk about a computer as a human or a person? It cannot feel, it has no emotions. IT is a machine that calculates very complex aglo with optimized TPUs (tensor processing units) nothing more. Nevertheless, interesting video!

It's a very common and time-saving metaphor for explaining machine behaviour. Why not use it?
