    Also, don't replace regular shopping with Dollar Tree and thrift store shopping because it's cheaper. $20 at the thrift store vs $20 at Mac is still $20. I learned this the hard way. It's so easy to spend way too much at Dollar Tree. Good finds there, though.

      Aston Haley this is the thing with society today. We are fed the idea by consumerism, celebrities, media etc that we need to buy stuff to be happy but all it does is leave us miserable as nothing will ever be good enough and after an initial rush we just keep looking for the next hit. It's trying to fill a void we can't fill and we just end up wasting money and hoarding stuff we don't need. And also just because celebrities etc have all these things doesn't mean they are happy, many of them aren't! If money and materialism made us happy, then every rich person would be happy! People are better off getting good at something, learning new skills, seeing new cultures and helping others than shopping for things they don't need.

    My best tip is to literally transfer all of your extra funds straight into a savings account. It sounds straightforward, but I used to REFUSE to do this because I thought I could keep track of it well enough. Surprise! I couldn’t. So I was always spending more money than I should’ve. Now that I transfer all the extra into my savings, it is out of sight, out of mind! And I have to stick to my budget or else I’ll overdraw my account. It also feels really good when I transfer large sums of extra money into my savings! Hurray!

      Great stuff 👍 What I do is immediately when I get paid I transfer 1/3 of it into my savings and then do not touch it and live with the rest. Get into a rhythm of doing it and you get to the point where you can't not do it. People boast about not saving and say you should enjoy your money but there is a difference between enjoying your money and just blowing it. If you blow it all through lack of self discipline you have no savings for emergencies or back up and who needs that stress? Just save a bit each month and be ok with living with what you can afford. That's all cool 😎

But as you are saying in your video, what made me realize that I was spending too much, is when I became so in debt that my father had to step in, help me out, but took control of my bank account... I could not use it unless it was for gas, groceries, car payments, rent, and other necessities. He did this for a year and I was amazed by how much money I had saved by having not spent any money on useless, materialistic objects and always going out to eat/drink. I learned it the hard way but the best way.

    • @laurakf
      @laurakf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yup, it encourages you to spend your money wisely. Saving up loads of money isn't doing anybody any good - not from a governmental perspective at least. They want to see you investing money so that their GDP goes up. Interest rates are low so that you can easily get money to buy a house (→ investment) and so that, instead of leaving your money to rot in a bank account, you invest in the stock market. There's advantages and disadvantages to that, but that's the current policy of at least the bank that's responsible for all things concerning the Euro in Europe. Interest rates are low so you invest your money. Simple stuff.

    I’ve become really good at saving money the past few years, which is huge because I was a huge spender and had years of living week to week. It’s been an evolution, but the first thing I did was work out all my bills for the whole year and then divided it by 26, and I put that money in a bills account every two weeks. All my bills are paid out of that account. This year I also set a really big financial goal that I’m excited to work towards. So now every time I think of spending I am naturally questioning myself and mostly preferring to save the money. Just two things I’ve done. The Barefoot Investor is a great book to help work out your finances too.

    Thank you so much for these videos Maddie! I am a new subscriber in the process of decluttering my life and practicing more sustainable habits to save money. I used to be an AWFUL shopaholic, I even had my car re-possessed at one point because of my spending problem (my rock bottom for sure :( )
    I wanted to share a tip that really opened my eyes and kicked my butt into saving mode. I challenged myself to not shop for anything other than groceries and absolute essentials (soap, toilet paper, etc.) for one month. The amount I saw in my bank account at the end of my challenge shocked me! After seeing how much I saved by just NOT shopping, it seriously motivated me to keep doing this every month. Seeing my savings gave me a bigger kick than the clothing/jewelry/makeup/shoes ever did. This opened up doors of travel, retirement, REAL rewards rather than short little bits of happiness from material objects. If anyone out there is struggling and not sure where to start, give yourself a small challenge, maybe even just a couple weeks and then see the money you save, Its really great motivation! THANK YOU again Madeleine, you have been an inspiring resource to me on this journey so far!

    I so relate to your point about gaining the same level of satisfaction (perhaps even more so) from decluttering that you once obtained from shopping! Your spirit and your space feel lighter from removing items that no longer serve you and you realize that you don't actually need as much stuff as you once thought you did to truly thrive. This is a really important message to spread in a world where conscious consumerism is at its infancy.

    • @greenkitty82

      fashionisbliss yes I totally agree. My space felt better once I decluttered. More at peace. But consumerism knows how to trick us and you really need to fight the power as its just polluting our planet and wasting our money. Second hand clothing is the best bet for clothes so it gets circulated around and not ending up in landfill but it's hard to get people to buy second hand when they are anal about something someone else has worn and are ego driven to elevate their social and sexual status.

And that I never really had to "learn the hard way" because I've always been frugal with my money and knew how to manage it since I got my first job. Young people definitely need to be taught this mentality in school or even just by their parents. Being this way has really helped me with being able to get my own car (that's only 4 yrs old) with my own money and still being able to live comfortably and not buy dumb things I don't need. A tool I can't be more positive about is YNAB (You Need A Budget). My boyfriend and I use it every day and helped us save more money and be thoughful about where to spend our money on.
    Basically, you need to give every penny that comes in a category and a purpose. You need to put in every expense you do, withdrawing it from the right category. You can see exactly where you spend your money on. Say, you have $20 every month available for make-up, and if you buy for $35 that month, you need to take out $15 from another category to make up (pun not intended) for your overspending. That leaves you with $15 less in, let's say, your 'vacation' category. That makes you more mindful of the things you value most and where you spend your money! Thanks for the vid!

    Sell your clutter from decluttering :D then donate them if they dont sell 🤷🏻‍♀️ and charity / secondhand shopping for clothes (and house stuff and furniture??) saves you money, plus you don’t contribute to fast fashion “capitalist consumerism trends” and its unethical / unsustainable practices that comes from the industry. Win win. 👏🏼

    I've never been a Shopaholic....hate shopping in stores. Grocery shopping is an itemized list i stick to, like glue. I do shop online and have Wishlists, also keep a running tab on Necessities so i don't spend hella money (I do indulge myself, budget permitting). I have a great Financial Adviser who has led me through the past 13 years (except in 2008 when everyone fell short) but...i took you up on the SkillShare offer for the next 2 months.....thank you so much for this video.

    I stopped going out in October (kinda sober october thing) and also tried out "saving my hundreds". So the idea is that let's say you getting paid £367 a week. £300 goes to savings account and you try to get by for the £67 (and whatever else you had in your account). It worked miracles for me

      You get paid 367 a week, right okay. But explain to me who (living normal independent life) can afford to put away 300??? What about rent, all the bills, food shopping and other necessary stuff like shampoo. Like seriously I don't get a lot at all and I struggle to save even 100 a month becasue most is bills, rent and food becasue I need to exist.

    • @potattoprincess9708
      @potattoprincess9708 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@niewiem00030 i do still have to pay all those things, and bills and food shopping etc. And I do pay it from mix of paycheck and savings. The fact that I put money away doesn't mean that they are untouchable. Putting them in separate account helps me not spend them all over the place but I still use them for stuff.

    one thing I have learned buying clothes or better to say I ask myself is which is the porpoise of it, for example right now I have bought an expensive jacket for rain, that it will be hardshell for the next winter...I live in a country with hard winter, uncomfortable fall and not so sunny spring so this jacket will be with me many days per year for several years, the old one I have thrown after 10 years of using it. While a jacket for a southern Europe spring it is totally unuseful so I will never buy or I will spend very little on it. This is just an example...

    I'm not a shopaholic, but as an American there were still some impulse purchases I would do but they were mostly to buy things for someone else. Bad habit since they weren't looking out for me like I was looking out for them. So I'm cutting down on the impulse buying, and focusing on making more money with a seasonal job, paying off some debt, and saving money to invest in a duplex next year to live in one side and rent out the other since in Florida the rent is higher than the mortgage. Wish me luck!

The new trends bore me and are now too young for me. I don't need any more clothes and accessories. I have all the basics and a lot of "good" clothes. I don't need anything for my house. But still somehow, somewhere the money is still disappearing. Great tips and great video.

    I started watching your videos over the summer and found them really inspiring! It motivated me to do a massive clear out before moving Ireland-USA for grad school. I came here with only one normal sized suitcase!!! Past me would genuinely never have thought that was possible. When I lived in England I had a FAMILY size suitcase (big enough for four!!!) and a normal sized suitcase AND a small suitcase. Mad. Since I moved here on August 28th I've bought 3 dresses secondhand (there was a ridiculous heatwave and I hadn't packed summer clothes), a secondhand book, two plants, and a notebook. Honestly, I will never go back to fast fashion or buying myself stuff every weekend. I'm using the money I've saved to go home for Christmas- small changes add up to big savings! Keep doing what you're doing and I'm v excited for more clear-out and packing videos as you get ready to head to Cornwall :)

    I have a friend who constantly shops and constantly declutters. She's in a constant cycle. On the other hand I am a hoarder, but I rotate my stuff, or when I need something I look through what I already have. If I need something, I already know I probably have something that will work. So I focus more on bringing in less and using what I have, even if its not "perfect."

    I found it helpful to set a separate account for clothes, makeup, house stuff etc. After paycheck I sent some monet to that account every month and I only spend that much on stuff that I want to buy. I quicky realized that I dont buy stuff that often because I see clearly how much I spend on extra things and how much I have left. I started to think that meybe I really dont need to buy something and rather keep that money in my side account and save for something else. Also I really agree that money is a taboo! Hi, Maddie! I'm not a shopaholic but I have some trouble managing my money... Great advice in general, with some really great tips ;) Just wanted to let everyone know that if you can't afford something like Skillshare (specially if you have a tight budget) that there is a great channel, specially for people on their 20s and 30s, called The Financial Diet that has great advice as well. Not sponsored, just trying to help!
    Love seeing (almost) all of your videos (also on the other channel); I'm not vegan but you inspire me to be more creative with vegetables and in general ;) I have had IBS D since I was 20 (I'm 36 now) and even though it is very different from your kind I love how in - what it seems - so little time you have found a way not to let it hold you back (something that I still struggle with). It is very inspiring and it makes me really proud! :) I wish all the best for you and Alex and, thank you for sharing ;)
    Oh, and when you come back to Porto next year, know this: women should say "obrigada" and men should say "obrigado" (it depends on your gender and not on the other person's - even portuguese people get this wrong ;) ) :*

    You’re so right. Specifically I can relate to your advice on unsubscribing from those you tubers who sell and sell to us . I found myself buying more after watching those channels. The problem here is that they earn money by advertising and selling to us meanwhile we are just wasting our money. This is horrible moral issue but here we are that’s what people do to earn nice comfy money for themselves - capitalism ..... so 🥴 we need to smarten up for ourselves

    I was brought up in the 80ies and find it very alarming that shopping today is such a big thing. Just when I look at what people buy and then throw away, it's insane! Can you young guys imagine that I only had two trousers and two sweaters when I was 22? LOL We didn't buy so much stuff and - with Xmas coming up - I have to say that we also didn't make so big presents (and definitely not to everyone we occasionally know...). We had less, we didn't need more and we were happy. Sometimes I think the urge to "need" more is a sort of side-effect from the world-wide social-media "epidemic". Nowadays you can see what people have around the globe and that creates "needs" or better: desires.
    I'm happy to see that more and more young people are into that minimalism-thing. To me it seems like I was brought up to be a minimalist, just that nobody called it that way ;)

    I must be "lucky" because I live in a poor country and I am a teacher with a minimum wage in a poorer area of my country, which means I am a minimalist without even wanting to be one because I just don't have the money to spend on STUFF. xD It's kind of a problem that I work till night every day and I can't afford to buy a new laptop after my 7 years old one started acting up this month. These are my kind of problems. I need to find a way to make more money but working even more is just not an option because there are only 24 hours in a day.

    • @greenkitty82
      @greenkitty82 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes for you you a minimalist out of force but you still lack for necessities. That's is the problem of the west is that many people have good paying jobs and yet waste their money on shopping for things they don't need and really can't afford which can go to the necessities that you need as you say a laptop. I grew up not really poor but not rich either to afford new things, so I learnt from a child to be resourceful and get second hand things (none of my clothes were new) and free things wherever I could. I have bought new clothes in my adult life but even now if I have some money I always revert back to the second hand and free stuff again simply because it's ingrained in my mindset and I'm experienced with it. You obviously don't want to work yourself to burnout and then be very unwell so if there is no way to make more money e.g. with a side job or pay rise, see if you can get the laptop second hand as many people want to upgrade even though there is nothing wrong with their old one. If you treasure hunt you may find one at a really good price! Hope things work out for you. It makes you a stronger individual!. 😊💪
