I live in Virginia and you have officially inspired me to start my own European skull mountain business. You are a true legend for helping me with this. Thanks! Love this channel
Holy Crap!! I wish I would have watched your video a month ago. I had on surgical gloves, but while shaving off some meat after maceration, I punctured my finger ever so slightly, just a slight prick. 4 days later my finger blew up and was absolutely infected. Since then, I have been on 3 rounds of antibiotics and probably going to have to have a doctor slice open my index finger and irrigate it. To anyone who follows 5M, what he said about infection is absolutely true and important!
Thank you you’re awesome dude. I’m just getting into cleaning bones I have been collecting for a while thank you for your videos !! You’re helping people like me so much and saving us so much money on our collections lol.
Your videos are awesome and I wish I had found them earlier. My husband usually does our skulls but I thought I would try it out myself so he gave me a down and dirty period of instruction then let me have at it. I didn’t use the maceration process, instead I fleshed out my skull then boiled it with water, 1/2 cup of baking soda and a heavy squirt of Dawn Dish Soap. During the boil I added some Landmark TSP Heavy Duty Cleaner, about 1/3 cup. When the meat started coming off I cleaned/power washed all the skulls until clean. I let them dry over night, then I put the creme mixture on the skulls for 24 hours, then rinsed. My question is, can I re-whiten a skulls that I have already whitened with a powder lightener/40 volume creme developer mixture after boiling and cleaning? I did 1 mule deer and 2 black bear skulls in the same manner together. All skulls have areas that are grayish and it appears that there is a little bit of flaking on areas of the skulls, but not much. Also, the bear skulls appear to still have grease in the skulls. Can I rehydrate these skulls in water and use your whitening method without damaging the skulls? I really want them to be nice and white and I would like to get the remaining grease out of the bear skulls. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Not sure if you’ll answer, but what is a benefit in using the developer opposed to some peroxide? I just recently got into this myself, and trying to learn as much as I can!
Regular peroxide isn't as strong as the developer. Using the salon strength developer will make the white in the bone pop. I'm sure regular peroxide would work, but it may be more time consuming and won't get bright white results. Hope this helps!
@@OurTopPinLife It definitely is a big help! I have a ton of 20 & 30 volume developer on hand. My next question though, the smaller the species should I reduce the amount of time it’s in it?
For smaller species we use the cream developer with a whitening powder. Both can be found at the salon store. We have found the smaller ones are super fragile, and tend to fall apart when they are put in the hot developer. The cream method is less harsh. You just paint it on, and leave it in the sun for the day. It will be just as white!
Can I just dump the water I use onto the ground next to a river? I'm sure there is probably some run off of the 5 gallons but those natural bacteria won't hurt anything right?
That skull could be done in half the time if you change the water every 2-3 days. If you want to keep the lower jaw in tact take it out a few days earlier.
I can do them in 4 days in my maceration tank without changing the water. Bacteria is what breaks down the flesh. When you change the water you throw away most of the bacteria...
i found a rat and im gonna try the mason jar maceration. but i live in the netherlands we dont have hunters or hunting grounds so there is like no easy way to come by death animals.
Ok, this may sound gross, but what of we find a coyote carcass and want to finish the process that nature started.... we can't exactly skin it....just throw it all in and it will come off the bones?
@@OurTopPinLife got ya. I bought one this morning to try out. I normally just boil and pressure washer but work schedule doesn’t allow much time right now. The temperature on it can be adjusted up to around 90 degrees.
Yes. Then add water to the 3/4 line of the pot. It can be reused multiple times, as you will see when it starts to loose its strength. Things won't whiten as much.

Okay now I’ll watch video 😎! Love y’all hope all is well!

Sounds like you need to degrease more then re whiten.
Bears and hogs are almost impossible to degrease and can take months.
thanks for the in depth video guide!
Sure!
Very interesting
Thank you!
Fantastic video, man! Thanks
Helpful video.
Thanks.
👍👍
Looks good
Thank you!
Thank you for your detailed explanation, Can this process be done for smaller skulls?
Yes. In fact, this is the process we use on most smaller animals.
Thanks for the education.
Thanks for watching!

How many times can you reuse the 20 volume peroxide and how do you store it after using it?
I re-use it until it looses it's strength.
I store it in a 5 gallon bucket

Thank you nice work😅
is there a way to repair the split between the nasals on top, or is that just part of the process when they are degreasing/drying?
If you take a rubber band, and close the gap, then add a super thin layer along the crack, it will hold after it dries.
@@OurTopPinLife Thank you!
Cool video! With the peroxide do you think it will degrease long nose gar without damaging the heads?
I have done 1 gar, and it fell apart before it made it to the peroxide. So, I'm not much help.
Do you reuse your developer after you boil with it? Or once you boil it once it’s done?
You can reuse it several times
How many gallons of peroxide do you use in the pot?
Enough to fill up the pot🤷♂️
What do you use to glue the skull when it is a bit loose.?
We use super glue. It doesn't take much.
Just wondering if you remove the brain and eyes matter before you put it in the bucket
Not usually
What if you added some Rid-X to the water just to help create bacteria quicker?
I have tried that. Not sure that it helps much.

Not gross to me. If you soak it long enough the hide should come off. Be careful to not loose any of the small teeth.
What about the cartlidge on the back of the skull, there's two knobs near the brain that just won't rot off
Yeah it will. And anything that's left will come off with a water hose or power washer
thats an adjustable temp heater do you just turn it too the highest setting?
Yes
What kind of fish tank heater do you recommend?
The link is in the description
@@OurTopPinLife Thanks!
@@OurTopPinLife Would 110w be alright in your opion. I’m using a 5 gallon pale.
also very much worried about infection. so i have a mask and goggles, and 2 layers of gloves . beter looking stupid than death right
thank you! the process i’ve been doing has taken me weeks to months for 1 skull and i’ve just wanted a way to speed up the process, thank you!
Do you know what temperature your water is?
No idea. Using this method you will never get it to hot..

Do you still have beetles?
No I do not.
Do you add the whole gallon of developer when you are going to bleach it or half and half

Wearing a back the blue shirt while getting covered in stink is way too appropriate 🤣
