- James O'Brien speaks to Peter Geoghegan, an investigative journalist who's found that those who funded Liz Truss' 'disastrous' mini-budget are pumping millions into Rishi Sunak's election campaign.
Leading advisors of three right-wing think tanks have reportedly donated more than £5.5m to the Conservatives since Sunak replaced Truss as Prime Minister back in October 2022.
In the last four years, they've reportedly had more than 150 meetings with Tory ministers - lobbying on on a range of subjects.
'If you think Liz Truss was so bad, why would you make one of her donors your right-hand man?', Geoghegan tells James.

The smell of Conservative Britain. Its not just the rivers.
Bribers is a more fitting name to describe donors. The funny thing is these guys have 2 way bets, a win win situation.
Like football, snooker, rugby, F1, tennis, etc. all politicians should wear their sponsors' logos openly and with pride.
You don't think they have enough pride already? Are you serious?
@@Andrew-rc3vh too much. no, sarcastic.
Politicians should wear a large Union Flag on their coat fronts and a bigger bulls-eye on the back!
Literally pumping money into the furnace at this point, it wont save him
Brilliant Journalism you won't find in the Tory Press .
@martin How would you know? That would mean reading the "tory press" and making up your own mind and and we can't have that!
@@chatham43 oh its the tory simpbot back again
@@chatham43 I look at both the Tory press, non aligned press and Labour supporting press. The Tory press by and large parrot the Tories' policies or defend them. The others challenge and analyse them.
Now, you were saying?
Whenever it comes to political donations always ask yourself “what do they expect to get for their money?”
Millionaires don’t get that way by giving away money for nothing.
Exactly there's always a quid pro quo.
I'm centre right and I agree it should be outright illegal it's buying favour

@nick Labour will welcome them when they change sides.
Millions down the drain. The Tories are finished.
Led by Donkeys.
They should be forced to show who funds them
Trumpy Truss shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the reigns of power - again 😅
Classic tax right off for future favours...
In the USA political donations are not tax deductible, are they in UK?
@@dpagain2167 As a normal human who pays regular income tax etc. I am not certain what is available to me - but I am certain when you are at the level of donor these guys are - there are some special tax loopholes (or not even loopholes) you can use. For instance, when calculating average salaries in UK etc. the top earners aren't even included as they pay so little tax if any - due to offshoring/reworking the system...
It should be a conflict for Lord's to donate to a party.
Truss’s constituency is near where I live, her Bill board at Stoke Ferry was defaced, her name changed to Trump, this was over a week ago & still there
How much of this Tufton St money comes from right wing US sources?
Probably the same far-right extremists who funded convicted felon Trump's violent attempted coup.

It’s not how much they are willing to lose .it’s how much they stand to gain!,🤔🤔

I want my country back. A country that used to believe tolerance, honesty, decency, work, justice, and fair play mattered. Farage and Boris killed that.
LOL.
Corruption.
The honours system is so corrupt that my heuristic is not to trust anyone with a title unless I know their probity by some other means.
I can hear one of those football chants now... WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY
I wonder if Modhi has sent any rupees to pump up the funds.......
😊😊😊😊😊
It's such a small amount of money to buy a political party and an entire country.
Donors switch from Lettuce to toast, wheres the beef?.
Bojo was kicked out.

Imagine being so well off that you can donate 4m pounds without flinching
Soumds a lot like money laundering to me...
Definitely worth following Peter on socials.
Why is it that the BBC gives air time to these shady think tanks…
Robbie Gibb the Tory installed Non-executive director for BBC England region.
We really shouldn't be surprised at this
Imagine having £4 million spare and consciously deciding to give it to the Tory Party
Our government are far right!!
Get this money out of our politics
You'ed think they would increase payments as so many of them could become unemployed real soon.
If everybody in Britain read his book there would be carnage on the streets
Sounds like you have a similar situation as the US has for decades now. Moneyed interests purchased the vast majority of both of our two main parties.
Yep, they used media to do it and now we have Tories in the BBC our other main political parties don't ever get a mention. It's like whole wings of politics just disappeared under the Tories. Only two parties now
@@andys5626Reform/UKIP also gets far more media attention than their vote share merits, never mind that Reform have never had an MP and UKIP had a grand total of two! Meanwhile barely a peep about the Greens or the Lib Dems. The billionaire-owned right-wing media bias is a joke.
Full transparency is the only solution. EVERY donation is declared with full disclosure of source. Every contact with a minister - the meeting has to disclose the full financial sourcing of the lobbyist.
Our major problem is they have no experience in business only politics couldn't run a bath we need top business people 27 years of madness
All political funding should be publicly accessable information. It would keep any funny business to a minimum...
Great vid
How can on one hand O'Brien and co acknowledge all of this influence, and then on other talk about us being in a democracy? There's never been one, the ruling class just went into the shadows
Looking forward to listening to Peter's book on holiday in a few weeks
No different to the US Conservative CEO group that Cruella visited (who were underwheelmed, reportedly).
Well that's a waste of money
Are donations to think tanks taxed?
some are but the majority are listed as charlty status
Charitable status needs to be looked at as it seems so many are not very charitable and money that could be raised in tax could have an effect on govt income
The Tories need to be audited, investigated and jailed
I do not care what Sunac has to say, he can double my pension and i still will not vote for him.
👏👏👏
It's 100% obvious to anybody that understand this sort of thing... Rishi has no idea what he is doing, just like Liz Truss had no idea what she was doing, and so both have relied heavily on advisors - Their advisors are all from these think tanks, and so anytime the PM or previous PM opens their mouth it is think tanks talking.
You can't transfer money out of your own account to another account without answering questions about it and then there's this? It's a crazy world we're living in, that's for sure.

All political funding should be made public by law.
Too many bankers in government. A banker's purpose is to optimise rewards for customers. We are not and never were The Lettruss or Rish!'s customers. We are the field they plough, the till they dip in.
What are the rules, if there are any, about donating to political Parties? What are the rules about financial disclosures, such as sources of funding, by these so-called "independent think tanks"? What controls are there on lobbyists and their activities?
if minimum living wage of £30 an hr is not mentioned in Labour Party manifesto and immediate effect before 4th July election in first year then my big single working family and friends will Not be voting labour, cost of living has risen 3 times more making our wages worthless pennies that we cannot afford food and basic hygiene

The Tories used to be the industrialists party people who made stuff. Now it’s the party of Speculators,Hedgefund managers and government contractors looking for juicy government contracts for as little work as possible.
