    I definitely got the impression that those English speaking scenes were written by S.Koreans FOR S.Koreans. Meaning, to a S.Korean who doesn't speak English, it didn't sound weird or unnatural or badly acted at all - they wouldn't notice anything out of the ordinary. But to native English speaker, it sounds absolutely shite. I don't know if it was their acting or just the writing and direction. Maybe no English speaking actors could pull those scenes off in a way that felt convincing.

      It's like that wee lady in Shin Godzilla that spoke absolute shite english every other sentence to show that she was from the US CIA. But because she was native Japanese it was just no good. But Squid Games was weird cause it had what seemed to be native English speaking actors but it was like it was dubbed over or something and their delivery was just so bad. Those moments always just take me out of it.

    • @dropit7694
      @dropit7694 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@peedfarded It's not just the acting but the writing. The same thing happens in English speaking productions where foreign characters are poorly written and out of style that natives would not think they are realistic.

      That is 100% what it was about.
      Imagine all the foreign characters who have appeared in western TV/film. I bet everyone who's actually from that country thinks the performances are OTT. I'm a Scot and it tends to be extremely cringeworthy for us when a Scottish character comes up.

  • @Jonathan-we6lc
    @Jonathan-we6lc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I thought the whole thing was 'a bit of fun'. If you can overlook its flaws, it's great - the story isn't particularly original, it's a bit cheesy, but it has high production values, great cinematography, it's pretty gripping, has some great performances (if you're willing to look past the Korean soap style acting and the Americans). People who hated it probably misconstrued the hype as meaning that this was the next Sopranos, and just had to attack it to feel better

  • @scottdaniels4981
    @scottdaniels4981 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    He's dead on. I've lived in Korea for 3 years and have tried to learn Korean while I was here. I'm fluent in French and part of developing fluency was watching French television shows. I've tried watching multiple Korean shows while I was here (Prison Playbook, Bad Guys, Squid Game and Vincenzo) and the acting comes across as fucking atrocious to me. I've never finsihed watching a Korean television show as a result. Limmy hit the nail on the head when he used the word "Panto". I think it's just a cultural disconnect. I imagine it's how a lot of asians feel when Westerners show them something like Monty Python.
    Honestly, I think it's just a cultural thing that we'll never get because South Korea is so different to Western countries. For instance, when I started working here I was talking to a Korean colleague and she kept saying "yes, yes, yes, yes" over and over as I was talking to her. I thought she was just being dead rude, but Koreans do that to signal they're showing interest in what you have to say and that you're listening. There's other stuff like asking people your age and if you're married which comes across as quite abrupt and rude to us. They do it because how you speak to someone here is dependent upon titles and the age of the person. You conjugate verbs here depending on whether or not someone is your boss, is older than you, younger than you etc. and if you get it wrong it's quite rude.
    I also find Koreans to be way more expressive and "exaggerated" in expressing themselves.
    Anyway, the Koreans, a great bunch of lads.

      Yes and the "changes allegiances" woman was constantly overacting and shouting at the top of her lungs, speaking at a frantic pace just like some anime characters. It just doesn't translate well into live action and tbh, always feels weird in animes too.
      I enjoyed the concept, set desing and plot so watched to the end, but had to look past a lot of awkward pacing and shitty dialogue to get there. Can't wait for the remake in 10/15 years.. hopefully will be a bit more down to earth.

    I'm pretty sure the acting was supposed to be exaggerated like an anime.

    Reminded me of 13 beloved the Thai film, it was entertaining for a Netflix film that the masses will lap up.

      Yes. 13: game of death. I felt it was a very close match to this movie in many ways.

    So sick of these absurdly heavy handed shows. People act as if they're geniuses going on about "its not just battle royale, its about inequality and oppression". Like, yeah, obviously it is. A 5 year year old could see that. Just because its about an important issue doesn't mean it has anything important to say or is entertaining.

    Even if you watched the dubbed version.... The Americans would not have been dubbed and therefore you end up with the same result, so dubbed or subbed it doesn't make a effing difference

    SQ is an interesting thing to witness being reviewed by people who do not watch anime and dramas. It's a classic acting/writing, down to characterisation and plot, but it seems like such a mishmash to people who aren't used to it.

  • @dddgtsd

    Started well but my god the ending was dogshit. Loved all the set design etc and it was a great sort hybrid of reality tv, game shows but in a drama which I think is why it was so successful. But yes the ending seemed like they changed the original idea to make it open to a new series which the writer hasn't yet thought about.
    I also could overlook the pants style acting as I think sometimes in Korean cinema they can overact and it seems like a stylistic thing on the most part.

    i liked it, but i knew nothing about it, so zero expectation... had the same initial, this is a sad bastard film, but it picked up and drew me in for the binge. sure the dialog was basic, probably something of cultural difference, given its a korean property. subs over dubs anyday, unless the subs are shite.

      It's good. Some, to me, really shit parts/aspects, but overall good. It's just got one of those mass-appeal fun concepts in it that everyone goes wild for. And because it's a fun concept executed decently, people mistake that for overall quality. And because it's popular, criticism gets outright denied.
