Hey Doug ✨ I'd like to say that this is honestly the best way to lead, learn and grow throughout 🤯 It was just recently that I found your videos and barely a month of even giving whittling a go. It was my wife's Christmas gift to me, a carving set of knives and the book of whittling 24 easy projects that brought me here and honestly it has begun to feel so wonderful doing it that I wish to keep going and getting better. To have my very own version of you and have abundance of such great talent. Thank you, the time and care you put in to make these sort of things is just mesmerizing. I think you are awesome 👍🏻
I'm not sure how iv ended up on these videos here, but half an hour later I'm subscribed to Mr doug here and bought a small whittling knife on amazon... Dammit doug!
I'm starting to watch your videos more not only to see the techniques you use but partly because you're such a good guy. Thanks for bringing the light.
I've watched several of your videos now. I love that you are knowledgeable, but laid back; detailed but not fussy; and talented but humble. I'm studying your techniques & enjoying carving. Thanks Doug!
really useful as ever - my knives have never been so sharp since watching your videos , plus I have managed to get someone else to start carving by watching your videos - many thanks !
Hi Doug, I'm new to carving over here in England. have watched a couple of your videos when i get chance and intend to watch more, enjoyed the video on painting the Gnome and the natural way you present the videos especially with your sense of humour. I hope to see more of your videos. Best wishes. (Jim )
Learned something new today - dry brushing. I’ve heard the term but didn’t quite understand the application. Thanks for another bit of information that keeps the carving desire alive!
THANK YOU! I always dread painting my carvings, because they always turn out like they were dipped in paint and left to dry😂. This video really helped me out, THANK YOU.
You underestimate your talent Doug, the finish on that gnome's beard and hat is such a simple technique but the results are profound. All hail the "Gnome Master". 😎🇦🇺
Just came on here to rewatch your old painting video before I try and paint a Santa Claus that I've made from your 20 minute wizard video and this was here! It's brilliant, thanks Doug!
Thank you for your great videos! I have made 5 carvings in the past couple of weeks all thanks to you. I even made a little squat penguin from a 1 " square cutoff.
Gotta say Doug loving your channel here in the UK! Like Jack Salt I have ordered a couple of woodcarving knives from Amazon and cannot wait till they arrive so I can make a start!!
Great video, fun explanation. One tip for you, Doug. To get a better effect on the eyes, add a dry brush with grey or dark tan to the upper eyelid. You will find that this makes his 'stare' much softer. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks to you I have been whittling almost every day for the last 6 months. so much fun
Yes, thar hat went from looking smooth to showing the cuts. In the time I've been watching you, the changes in both carving & painting have become obvious. Love that you did the early to current comparison.
I've just returned to whittling and did one of your minimalist lighthouses and want to paint it. Not being an artist or knowing anything about painting, I searched your videos for a tutorial and am glad I did - your guidance is clear and understandable! Thank you for sharing the evolution of your pieces - now I only hope I can take what I've heard/seen from you and apply it to my own. It is a joy to watch your videos, learn from you, and see all of your awesome pieces! Thank you for sharing your work and passion with us!
Thanks for the awesome videos! You are amazing and I want to try this myself. My Dad was an amazing woodworker and as a little girl I would watch him make things. I think that is what got me interested in it. He passed away about 5 years ago but he would have loved watching you. I want to give this a try for him. Thank you not only for your talent but your ability to teach it in a non-intimitating way.
Doug: I am not sure if you read these comments but I wanted to let you know that I have carved fifteen of " the most simple yet satisfying carving ever" These were mainly for grandchildren and their parents plus a few friends. Thank you for the instruction and pattern. David
Thanks. You answered a lot of questions about sealing the wood before painting so you don't get paint bleed. You might think about multi vids for the more advanced. Your growing by leaps and bounds. It's really enjoyable watching you grow. It makes us grow also.
Your wood carving projects are getting better and better. Although every time I think it's impossible to make them better. You made great work, Doug 👍!
Hey again Doug! Really good lesson.... thank you! I've been working my way through your library and I really need to get better in this area. It can take a ho hum carving and make it respectable.
Wife got me some basic stuff to get me started carving for christmas. Glad i have these to look thru for instruction and inspirations. Thanks for the content. And merry christmas
I was content spending time carving, and then just a few minutes carefully slapping on paint. Now you gone and done gotten me paying attention to painting.😄 Thanks for the great video - looking forward to trying these techniques...
One of your old videos showed up on my TH-cam feed. I ended up watching it and loved your little characters. I just started carving after watching every one of your videos. This painting video is absolutely beautiful. Wonderful technique. I can’t wait to try it. I have completed 2 gnomes and about to start your simple Santa. Your carving looks awesome !
Good to see that you are getting your inspiration out of a book that used to be on my fathers bookshelf about 40 years ago.......(and good to see that they translated it to English). Thank you fot the video you have always been a great inspiration to a lot of carvers out there......Cheers

Thats how it works. Happened to me too 😆
I wonder how many of us would have the same testimony. Doug was responsible for getting me started.
And me. I'm just a few days ahead of you!
Yep, same here. I've been wood working for seams like a hundred years and Doug got me to start expanding to carving. Doug you do a great job.
Yeah, Happened to me too about 4 months ago. Good luck finding wood.
I'm starting to watch your videos more not only to see the techniques you use but partly because you're such a good guy. Thanks for bringing the light.
Greate job on those eyes Doug. You just keep getting better and better.
Watching Doug is better than watching the TV. Not only a fantastic carving of a Gnome, but a paint job to finish it.
Doug - you carved a self portrait!
I was about to make the same comment.
I like that you first give a method to keep your hands clean and then show how you measure if the dry brush brush is ready^^
