It's tough. He completely earned his contract and deserves it for all that he did in OKC. He does. But at this point in time, his game does not align with how much he is getting paid. His value is 20 million maximum. Two years ago, I had a feeling this could happen. Once he left OKC and joined the Rockets and then left there after a season I knew his career was going to spiral out of control if he didn't stay in one place and prove is worth. So while you are right that 5 years ago no one could have predicted this. If you were paying attention a few years back, you could see that his career was in jeopardy. This was a perfect storm. Russ had a terrible decline in the last year, meanwhile the Lakers traded away all of their depth, youth, size and defense. Everything that won them the championship, is gone. Lebron and AD are 2 years older. Nothing about this situation is good and I believe this may go down as one of the worst trades in NBA history given the circumstances and other opportunities available.

I feel like the Lakers should be looking into keeping Melo, Dwight, and/or Ellington. Build their depth with proven role players. They already fumbled with Monk by not re-signing him. I think it’s a good thing that KD and kyrie want out of Brooklyn. If they get what they wish for it provides the perfect team for the most ungrateful and most emotional player in the NBA, Ben Simmons. His skill and value isn’t worth having other superstars around him because he doesn’t share the same winning mindset and mentality as they do. With a starless Brooklyn team it will give him the perfect opportunity to play away from the spotlight and stick to his comfort zone.

That Russ trade was the dumbest trade ever. Why would you replace role players for such a huge single contract of a player that does none of the things those role players did and his main function is what your best player already does but significantly less efficiently with less IQ.
