- Ever have a plant COVERED in aphids? If so, take a closer look, you just may see this BENEFICIAL insect. It can easily be mistaken for caterpillars. But it is the larvae of the Four-speckled Hoverfly (Dioprosopa clavata). In the larval stage shown here in this video, they are voracious eaters of Aphids. And they can devour up to 400 aphids during it lifecycle. As flying adults they are important pollinators. To me, as an adult this specific species reminds me of a mini dragonfly. Knowing that this insect is beneficial in both stages makes my heart so happy. There are several species of hover flies, and all of them are beneficial for your habitat or garden. I get very excited when I see aphids, because I know that very soon, these will show up for lunch. ✌🏼💝🦋🦋
