Ian Anderson wrote in his autobiography that a classical guitar student living in his building drove him crazy playing Bach's Bouree in D minor over and over. He decided to write a rock/jazz piece based on the Bach piece as revenge. One of my all-time favorite pieces of music. The rest of this album is a must-listen, every song is unique and excellent. It was the 2nd Tull album, and the first where Ian Anderson had all the writing credits, with no covers. The next album, Benefit, is at least as good.
Incredible tune with Ian mastering the flute. This song comes or derived from a 17th century French dance! The bass playing was also spectacular. First time I heard this goes back to 1972 or ‘’73. I was 12 at the time and it was off of my brothers Livin’ in the Past live album!
Love the way Tull showcase all the instruments in this song. Yes, the flute and the bass but also the drums and electric lead guitar play their roles perfectly.
@@sixbladeknife44 Two real gems from this band; I'd also give the slight nod to Benefit, but oh how I especially love "We Used to Know" and "Reasons for Waiting" off Stand Up.
@@tkengathegrateful4844 Those are def. two superb tracks. I think it’s the whole flow of Benefit that gives it a slight edge for me, but I do love all the songs on Stand Up. The bonus track “17” off of Stand Up is also great and one of my Tull favorites.
All of the songs on Stand Up are great. I saw them live in 1969 shortly after Stand Up was released. It is hard to pick one song. Suggestions: WeUsed to Know and Nothing is Easy.
There's a great live video of this on TH-cam ~~ JethroTull Bouree French TV 1969 "La Joconde". A lot of fun to watch Ian flamingo & Glenn Cornick lose himself in his bass. Same album: "New Day Yesterday" .....a banger
This always reminds me of Steeleye Span - JT here takes a classical piece and give it a jazz/funk treatment. Steeleye Span tends to take a traditional English folk song and give it a hard rock treatment. But the base idea is roughly the same: taking something hundreds of years old and giving it a totally modern treatment.
Also wanted to add, two of the most beautiful and meaningful songs ever are on Stand Up: Look Into the Sun, and We Used to Know (now infamous as the source of the chord progression that the Eagles stole for Hotel California). Check them out for yourself or react, but don't miss them.
If this piece appealed to you, you may be interested in By Kind Permission Of off of their Living In The Past album. It borrows, heavily, from Beethoven, but with a jazz feel.
Here's a link to the original J.S. Bach composition - it's only about two minutes long and worth a listen and comparison: th-cam.com/video/9wPq5N_FVnI/w-d-xo.html . The whole "Stand Up" album is excellent - and contains possibly my favourite Jethro Tull track, the beautiful love song "Reasons for Waiting", which also features a flute duet.
Stand Up is one of my favorite albums. When people ask me what Jethro Tull sounds like, I tell them anything they want to sound like. Their own genre.

From this same album (Stand Up) hit 1st and 2nd track on Side Two (NOTHING IS EASY and FAT MAN).
It's a very creative take on Bach's famous bouree.

'69, to be precise, and it's a Bach piece that all classical guitar players learn as a basic piece.
Yea bro, this whole album is fire. Really like these guys.
The great Glenn Cornick(RIP) on Bass here.
Martin Barre the 'new' lead guitarist for JT on this their 2nd lp is playing the second flute
Love, love, love this. Jethro Tull was such a favorite of mine. I can almost smell the strawberry incense we burned 24/7. Blessings all..
My favourite Jethro Tull music (credit to Bach of course).
Bouree is Ian's solo spot in his live show. Find any live performance of it and it will blow your mind.
I think this was my 1st JT album, now my family didn't appreciate most of my rock albums, but this got their approval
The opening and closing melody is recognizably Bach's, but the syncopation, arrangement, and development were all from Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull.
My first Jethro Tull album. Rest of the songs on it deserve a listen
Love your reactions. Love my 60's and 70's music the best. 😊
Yes! That’s my favorite time too!!!!
One is never the same after hearing this song
If you enjoyed that try Elegy from the Storm Watch album. Another very pretty instrumental
Love the way Tull showcase all the instruments in this song. Yes, the flute and the bass but also the drums and electric lead guitar play their roles perfectly.
Must watch a live version. Ian throws in everything but the kitchen sink.
Stand Up is possibly even better than Aqualung. This song is under appreciated by the reaction crowd so props to you!
Ian is so creative putting his own interpretation into this recording. Love it so much.❤❤❤❤
This whole Stand Up might be their best.
One of my favourites and would love Shawn to react to "New Day Yesterday".
It’s right up there, although I give a slight edge to Benefit.

Two fantastic choices. The whole album is amazing.

Pure Artistry ❤
A very personal song for me as I heard it first while in the house of a girl on whom I had a crush. This song was the opening gate to the crisis.
That song was the second Tull song I heard and it got me hooked to them really quick )
Rahsaan Roland Kirk influenced Ian Anderson to learn to play the flute, check out his music too.

Great album.
Love this!❤
❤❤❤
You could probably spend a fair bit of an enjoyable day finding and listening to many versions of this song. :)

And "Look Into the Sun" as my favorite lost love song.
The classics survive. Bach rocks.
Loved this! 🥰⭐️
This was said to be stole from J S Bach

Led Zeppelin also incorporated Renaissance music into their compositions.
BEEN A SMALL WHILE ON SOME TULL HUH? 😮HEY MAN YOU'RE ONLYYYYY ONE MAN RIGHT SHAWN! 😊I HAVE TO LOOK AT YOUR TULL STUFF SO I DON'T REPEAT MYSELF!👍
Ah , Bach
Here's a version of the original Bach piece played on baroque lute: th-cam.com/video/rKebYt6m0t0/w-d-xo.html
I try to watch music reaction videos, but the videos gets paused continually. And the commentary is boring. You, however, are very interesting
Please check out " MY GOD " by JT
Classic. Most TH-cam reactors do the live Isle version, but I greatly prefer the studio one. How do you feel about it?
@@nyrocks5580 right on. Absolutely agree.
