Love it. Scorsese is basically reporting what he'd seen during the years he grew up around the Little Italy section of NYC, and his (and co-writer Mardik Martin's) attention to various details is perfect: the "mook" dialogue, the getting-into-a-fight for no good reason, the drinks served after the fight, the ritual of paying off the cops..The hand-held camera is a great choice too--gives it a documentary-like feeling similar to 'The French Connection.'
This is one of my favorite movie fights ever because it's messy. I had classmates in a film class say that this was scene kinda sucked. Don't get me wrong I'll love me a good choreographed fight any day. But what I love about this scene is because that's how fights are. They're sloppy, the opponents don't give each other chances to fight back, there's scrambling, people flinched because they feared of getting hit. This is good acting.
I recall watching this when I was really young and feeling it sucked too but now think it's brilliant and very true to life. We're inundated with immaculately choreographed fights in film so this feels like a breath of fresh air, funny that given its age. Bar brawls like this are more confusion than they are anger, there's opportunity to really cause harm but that's mostly avoided because everyone involved aren't all that upset--most of them don't even know what it's about, even the people at the source don't seem to have their hearts in it. A mook? No one, not even the guy who said it, even seem to know what that means yet he throws the first punch anyway? Hilarious!
Great scene. More like a real fight. Notice they fight in character. Johnny Boy and Tony both dive in; Charlie tries to talk his way out of it; the guy called mook doesn't know what to do, it's two against one after all, just keeps backing away from it. Goes to show you, training and know-how, would be useful in a fight.
The big fella looks like the guy in Casino who tries to tell Pesci he thought Pesci was laying the bet. If so, what a great cameo. Twice now he tries to stiff Italian wiseguys in Scorsese movies.
This is so funny. They stop fighting then start up again at the slightest provocation. Then the fat guy knocks his own henchmen over like a bowling ball on skittles.
"Up your ass!" Such a great movie. Scorsese is a master of comedy despite his films not being strict genre comedies. Even Last Temptation has wonderful humour, Dafoe is a great actor. The shakedown bar scene is French Connection is equally hilarious, btw! "Hey you, haircut!"
What films that the French connection ?? Is that the one with gene Hackman ? That's another film I havnt watched but I think is on the to watch list ??
+Debra Shelton Yeah, it's based on a real life 1962 heroin bust. Hackman is amazing in it, won the Oscar, great, legendary car chase near the end. Directed by William Friedkin before he did The Exorcist.
This is the most realistic bar brawl I have ever seen put to film. Very few punches landing and just a bunch of awkward shoves and running.
You are so right. I never really thought about that. A real street fight looks exactly like that
Thats exactly what I told my mate just now. We both have worked in bars & clubs and this is exactly what fights look like
@@RonnieRingwood tru. daft cunts wailing.
Nobody was hitting anybody how could you say that was realistic nobody even hardly got hurt
@@truthalways8071 Because this is what a random bar fight looks like. Half drunk, out of shape dudes fight like this. Chaotic and uncoordinated.
You have to respect how they defend each other when the cops show up.
DeNiro on the pool table, fighting off a group of guys with a broken cue. Haha, Best scene in the whole movie :)
Disappointed dunsky is best clip
That long pause before he clocks that guy is hilarious

Great analysis and both great movies. I think he did the same with Raging Bull.
I love how Jimmy’s only technique in a scuffle is to throw a random object in someone’s way in an attempt to obstruct them lmao

FritzIdler and Charlie is knocked down on a pool table all the time because of one good punch also very real thing 😆
i dig the moving camera , it convays the chaos of a bar fite
Crazy how you could see Scorsese's mastery even at this early stage. It was rough, but the sweeping long take was still technically amazing!
this bar is probably a H&M now
joey clams Hahaha
joey clams
Or an AIDS clinic.
Clothes for mooks
Lol probably
Old school New York City almost makes me shed a tear.
LOL I love the joey clams character. "eyyy, eyyyyy, eeyyyyy"
George Memmoli. He's the guy at the ice rink in Rocky. Very funny guy.
De Niro on the pool table hahaha priceless
1:45 Jimmy Boy does the same face than Jimmy Conway in goodfellas, when he kicked Batts.
😂
The way Joey Clams stares at him before giving him a mook 😂😂
Oh man Scorsese really knows how to choose a perfect song for a scene...
something special about this scene. the singer's raspy voice matches the dingy setting and fighting really nicely.
"Going to Philadelphia"... love everything about that line.
"dont fucking touch me scumbag" "eyyyyyyyyy....eyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.....eyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" *whap*
hillarious..look at del nero...when on pool table...fckin beat everyone with stick..lol

So great to see Marco in Everybody Love's Raymond getting involved!
De Niro's kick move will always be iconic and awesome to watch (except in The Irishman)
Just a tremendous cameo by Van Morrison as Joey.
The way De Niro throws his punches reminds me a lot of the bad kids i knew in middle school

"You heard what he said, make it yours. Long as it sounds good nobody's gonna care what it's about."

"You thought I was layin'..."
"No, I'm takin" Its those little lines that are hilarious lol
Didn't see him calling Nicky and Frankie "mooks". Big difference when the made guys come collecting.
+Robert Thomas He's also in Rocky. He let's Rocky and Adrian use the ice skating ring. He was a rat bastard in that, too. lol
The MIGHTY 70's.

The Netflix daredevil series 100% stole this idea with the camera moving area to area in a fight
