You should not be breathing in that dust sanding the bottom paint ! Invest in a good respirator ! Check out the label on the can of bottom paint before you work with that or any product ! These chemicals all have a thing called an MSDS sheet that is available for all chemicals that in detail tell you the safe handling and exposure limits plus what to do if you have a reaction from the toxic exposure ! The marina should have the information you need ! be safe

The hydrovane is going to be an absolute game changer for you, without a doubt the best bit of kit you'll ever have on your boat, especially on your boat with your swim platform/transom setup and dual helms, a servo pendulum vane would never have been a feasible self steering option, great bit of kit for sure

It is great to have your dad helping. Not just to help with repairs but the time you get to spend with him while you are an adult and not a young girl. On a project that is yours. I admire that in you. I grew up in Kansas near Pittsburgh Kansas went to Vietnam for 2 tours then returned and became 🎉😢an aircraft mechanic. He passed at 72 years and I missed working with him. Enjoy your time with him.😊

I would drop the keel, clean it all up and check it thoroughly, make any repairs, and REPLACE the keel bedding as well as those keel bolts with new ones, and NOT using 316 stainless. Most keels are not adequately fastened fore and aft,

A Benneteau actually does NOT HAVE KEEL BOLTS. A keel bolt is traditionally a long J shaped root, maybe 2-3 feet long, permanently embedded in the keel. The top of it is threaded, yes. But Bene usually saved money buying cast iron keels, only usind lead on their racers.
Bene actually drills a threaded hole, maybe 6" deep, in the top of the iron keel. Then they put a traditional keel NUT on top to secure the keel.
This actually makes sense, because rusty keel nuts can be removed and replaced, one at a time, while the boat is in the water. If the keel STUD has rusted, it can be replaced the same way.
With traditional keel bolts, you have to haul the boat, cut them out of the keel or sister in new ones, work with molten lead, a MAJOR job.
The hardest part of a Bene keel job, is finding a big enough wrench (rent or borrow it) and the biggest breaker bar you can find to turn it. You also MUST use a huge torque wrench to reinstall them. Torque is critical.
Using a torch to bust the rust, or using dry ice or liquid nitrogen to freeze crack the rust instead, can make the job much easier.
Ask around. Call Bene. This is how owners and yards do it.
Then wax, grease, or gob on your choice to make sure the new ones don't rust.
    Happy thanksgiving.
Remember, the boat is stronger than you are--so you have to outsmart it.

You have an awesome dad! This is coming from another dad. If I could just make a suggestion, for the next rebuild, I’m a building contractor and I worked on boats, Homes planes, trains. Invest in a Random orbital sander. Plus a couple extra batteries would help for your oscillating tool, which is great for tight spots, but a random orbital will get those large areas, much quicker and smoother and you have a much wider variety and grits and types of paper for Wood/fiberglass/metal. Good luck. It’s fun watching you guys.

Oh the joys of cutlas bearings and shaft couplers. I wish you could have been around when I replaced both of mine in a 76 Luhrs with velvet drive transmissions. At least your hands fit! Its also great that you let your Dad come and help you. I don't have to tell you how much it means to Him to be be there making sure His little girl is safe and everything is done perfectly. You're a one in a million Lauren. And I see how proud your Father is of you. Keep up the great work! And before I forget,, Girl you so dirty!!! I love boats dearly, but when its time scrape and grind its Filthy!! But you have to admit, they look so pretty when its finished. And thank God its not an annual ritual!
How did your keel bolts look? When i pulled mine i wound up just replacing them all even though only two showed signs of corrosion. And used locktight and used 4000 around them and 5200 for the outside of the keel. Two annuals later they looked like brand new. No intrusion at all. And i bumped a few times. Hey, it happens... She's coming along great! And please, go over your new vain system, I really like the way its set up. It looks like it has been a part of the boat and not like most that look slapped on. Ive been doing the boatyard babble for a while, you've got plenty to do besides reading. So ill end here with. Great job and enjoy the time with your Dad. Fair skies hopefully!

You will just have to accept the "S" track while sailing, but it is worth the few extra miles you sail on passage. Congratulations on getting a Hydrovane! We are in the Madeira Archipelago, headed to Brazil.

I'm glad to see that you have help. I know that you have a tendency to get overwhelmed. Just focus on one thing at a time and before you know it, its completed. Soon you'll be back on the water where you seem to be happiest.
I watch another sailing blog. Their name is S V Cuba. They just had a major game changer happen to them. They got T-boned by a 60 catamaran at anchor. It did major damage to their vessel. Cracked hull and separation of deck to hull. Soon they will get more evaluation done when its on the hard. Just think of what they are going through right now. They are full live aboard. And they are on the islands close to you. I forgot which island but they are having problems getting their boat out of the water and getting it inspected plus they will have more problems finding the qualified people to work on the boat. I feel for them. But anyways I just wanted to let you know that just keep trying and don't give up because its your dream and its your life and you've worked hard for it so you deserve it. Okay I'll see you next week and take your time it'll all come together soon enough. 😊

This reminds me of reading Laura Dekkers book One Girl One Dream and how her Dad flew to some ports to help her with boat projects :) Hope you read her book :)

Try making outlines for todo lists, update as you knock items off. Another power trick is multiple clip boards, one for each major topic of concern or interest. My life changed the day I grasped the multi clip board theory.

When your dad finishes with your ship, I'd appreciate you sending him over to help me with mine. A good helper is hard to find, and a qualified marine mechanic is nearly impossible to find.

    Happy New Year 2024 Lauren You have had one hell of a good Season. Hope you have a wonderful time exploring. You motivate the ones that live vivaciously through your adventures. Be safe out there and keep the updates rolling. Windvanes work like a charm. Smooth sailing and may the wind always blow in your direction. ( ;

My Girl, you've heard the saying that "there's a tool for every job"..? Well, I can assure you that doesn't apply to the tiny battery operated multi saw that you're using on the keel. I'm surprised that others in the yard who have seen you working on that, haven't advised you before now. Heavy duty jobs require heavy duty tools. Good on you for having a go at what you have however. A heavy duty angle grinder (some battery operated ones are very good these days) would see that work done very quickly, and better. (Just some friendly advice from an old dude who has done it all before..)

The hydrovane is fascinating. Can’t wait to hear about how it works and the benefits. I get it for emergency but what I’m wondering is what benefit it has compared to using the regular rudder. I hear they are more efficient I just don’t know how exactly but super cool and offers a ton of peace of mind.
