  • Nickelodeon's biggest original show of 1985, Turkey Television saw original shorts from the cast and crew of You Can't Do That On Television, comedy from around the world, stand-up routines and weird music videos! That sounds neat, right? So why isn't it so well remembered?

This was, no shit, my favorite show not called Transformers when I was 8. It's how I discovered Charlie Chaplin (because my mom told me who he was), Weird Al, Dana Carvey, Yakov Smirnoff, Uncle Floyd and "Hardware Wars". Hell, it was my intro to the concept of stand-up comedy. They got away with some crazy stuff (one of the Argentine cartoons was about a flasher who women laughed at, and they ran the Carvey "just as good dammit" bit uncut). Strong memories of the school admins, Vance Vain, the silent films, and various comedians doing their impression of a turkey.
I think the longer non-music bits were left out of the 30m version, as there were definitely some long ones in the 60m version. It absolutely would not hold up for grown me, but it was perfect for an ADHD-as-fuck 3rd grader.

I went to day camp and had to tape it and all the guys at camp taped it too and we could not wait to get home and watch it and would discuss it the next day, rolling on the ground laughing. It was unpolished, raw, idiotic, random, irreverent and fun! Loved the turkey pop ups and the turkey-pilgrim hunting animation. Also loved Super Guy-interesting to learn they were created by the same people. Who hated Turkey Television? PARENTS! My parents were terrified that I loved the show and couldn’t get enough! Surprised Nickelodeon considers this a bomb, but I do think it appealed more to pre teen boys, than girls. Thank you for covering it. I found the history fascinating.

Does anyone remember something called, "The Nick-At-Nite Club"? It wasn't a real show, just a clip of a stand-up comedian that was shown during the commercials when Nick-at-Nite first came on the air in 1988 or 1989, and they would show a sign called, "The Nick-at-Night Club". I loved the show, Mad Movies, too!
One thing that really made me mad, though, was that with the cable system that my family and I had, it was Nickelodeon in the daytime and Arts & Entertainment after 8pm. They would show a few seconds of the Nick-At-Nite show (which was Donna Reed, by the way), then switch it over to A&E. I can still remember when they changed it over to Nick-at-Nite, but not the exact year: I was watching Double Dare at the time, and saw the crawl on the bottom of the screen. At first, we had that old dinosaur, the Jerrold cable box, but then we got a remote control.
Good part about it, though, was they showed a really good serial, The Invisible Man; I have that on dvd now.
One cable channel having to share with two is still going on, though. WLJC-TV Beattyville, KY with religious programming and Cozi-TV, which comes in on channel 19 in my area.

    • @100percentSNAFU
      @100percentSNAFU 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I remember all of that stuff, right down to the ancient cable box with a dial! Nickelodeon was channel 21 where I lived, and it also split with A&E a few minutes after 8pm. I was maybe 10-11 years old or so when Nick at Nite became a thing, and I too remember it getting cut off a few minutes into Donna Reed to switch over the the A&E network. Eventually it got it's own channel and I could enjoy gems like "Car 54 Where are You?", Mr. Ed, My Three Sons, etc. on Nick at Nite.
I remember when my dad first got the cable box. It was such a big deal. We went from 12 channels to the unbelievable number of 21 channels. Wow! The dial in the box went up to 36, but the highest channel available was 25, of which we got 21 (the premium networks were "scrambled"). I remember thinking how crazy it would be to someday use all the channels on that dial. And here we are some 30 years later and we have over a thousand channels of complete garbage.

I want to offer a weak defense of this show. I can understand why Geri Laybourne was unhappy with it. But as a ten year old human in 1986, I loved the shit out of it. It wasn't all good, I agree. I'd say the segments failed more frequently than they landed. But there was still enough good content in this show to keep me watching. Most especially things like that music video you offhandedly made fun of - Commander Cody "Two Triple Cheese" is an absolute all time great video and it was very appropriate for a Nickelodeon audience circa 1986. My sister and I used to sing that song all the time! But yeah I can see how doing a "Night Flight but for kids" show (side note, Night Flight was another show I have very fond memories of) was a problem from a production standpoint. Maybe I just liked it because there wasn't a whole lot of TV for kids in 1986, so spending my afternoons watching this show I just didn't know any better. Anyway, to anyone reading this you owe it to yourself to watch that Commander Cody music video - th-cam.com/video/E0hwTrNkJCg/w-d-xo.html

Cable was in its literal infancy when this show came out and yep, they were throwing all the spaghetti at the wall to see what would stick...but us kids ate it up and we liked it. It was def quirky but witty and weird and fun for after school. Some clips seemed just for adults but they didn't try to dumb it down, and they also got away with a lot more because it was several years before TV audience age-ratings were even a thing. I also think they were trying to be unique by pulling in imported cartoons and old Chaplin/silent film stuff, because those were hard to find back then.

We had Nickelodeon around 1985 at our home so I indeed watched Turkey TV quite a bit. It held my interest most of the time whenever it was on, feeling like something sophisticated (or, sophisticated for KIDS) I could watch in the daytime since I was rarely allowed to stay awake during Best Of SNL and Second City on Nick At Nite (no one believes me when I say Ed Grimley was a hit with five-eight year olds in the 80s.)
Turkey TV was very enjoyable for kids like me though that enjoyed old films, foreign films, and chaotic "punk" skits. Looking back, it was quite a slapdash show, quite uneven, but there wasn't really anything else like it on tv at the time, certainly not kid's tv.
ONE MORE THING: I grew up in the deep inner cities of South Jersey just on the border to Philadelphia in the 80s, and I watched Uncle Floyd new jersey public access, so it was always weird to see him break into cable tv as I knew him as a local figure.

You may be thinking of one of the clips from The Uncle Floyd Show that they aired, a recurring bit about "how to eat _____ like a slob" where he would do all kinds of weird, often disgusting gags with different foods (karate chopping a cake in half, slamming it into his face like a pie, some strange stuff with pancakes, etc.). One of these involved red Jell-O, and he re-enacted the scene from The Blob where it oozes into the movie theater, though in this case, he just smooshed the Jell-O through an air conditioning vent with his hands.

It was like a children’s tv magazine style show, with kids interviewing other kids doing interesting things. Covering 4-H fairs and answering kids letters. It was on the local CBS channel here, just before the cartoon cycle would begin. Not a local show, I assume it was in syndication. I loved this show when it was on. There was a segement "A day in the life of a food" where pieces of food would scream as they were eating. My young brain loved it. The only one I really remember was when a guy was eating walnuts and one of them laughed when the nut cracker didn't work then there was an "uh-oh" when the guy brought out a hammer.

I miss that era of experimental shows that the '80s had such as Turkey TV and Night Flight (from USA Channel). I used to try to catch Turkey TV as much as possible when I was a kid. I mainly remember seeing it late night. Anyway, shows like that are probably why I mainly watch TH-cam over any other streaming site all because of the randomness of topics I can watch compared to other streaming sites.

Fantastic, insightful work as per always!
These little oddball failures I find more fascinating than some of the more well remembered properties. I do remember this show (not well I was 5 or 6), and I remember thinking the same that I thought about out of control: that it was loud, kind of gross, and not all that funny. Even watching the clips now, they seem more schitzophrenic than anything.
(I assume the next in house production is Double Dare- so id say they learned their lesson pretty quick)

Matthew Daley The concept was fine, and I really enjoyed the early episodes. Even though they got steamrolled when they invited Siskel and Ebert, they still looked like they had a good time. The “jump the shark” moment occurred afterward, when they started incorporating comedy skits with the critics in between the movie reviews. This made no sense: were they “Rated K” or “YCDTOT”? Also, losing all four original critics for that sealed its fate.

  • @Fangarius

Turkey TV was definitely a lost classic for me, but wasn't well remembered. I also recall in a TV Guide article which panned it, where Ms. Laybourne admitted she knew they were in trouble just by the name alone. I loved the black and white shorts they dubbed, such as Stewed Prunes and Liver Milkshake. I also recall them adding shorts I once saw on Showtime (such as Hardware Wars). Though as you pointed out, they lacked a VJ of any kind, the first season did have some Thurman Turkey shorts, a la Roadrunner, where Thurman was outwitting a pilgrim for the most part.
Nevertheless, the reason why I suspect it was attempted was about the time in 1985, animated cartoons were fading due to syndication, and the trend was now to make packaged shows with random shorts and nonsense, due to shortened attention spans. And with YCDTOT about to enter its swan song, I suspect Nick wanted to do a spin-off but with a different format. To me, as I watched with my cousins (I was about to be a Junior in High School), I noticed while most of the shorts got their attention, the music videos, not so much.
The problem, of course, wasn't the parody songs, like the Burger One, Fish Heads (which allegedly starred Joel Hodgson from MST3K), and Ricky from Weird Al. There were some which made my cousins wonder what exactly were they watching. The first odd one I recall was one from France, where apparently the man is ranting more than he is singing, the other was an instrumental one with some guys playing a bizarre street game with fuzzy dice, golf putters, and other sports related items. Think the first season intro from Kids in the Hall, but being over several minutes long. Though interesting and too strange for MTV, VH1 or other video channels at the time, it didn't really hold any interest.
The show itself was intriguing because it was the only one which simultaneously was a hit and a miss at the same time. I recall when they even changed the intro format of the show before it went off-the-air, fading into obscurity until now. To me it was one of Nickelodeon's better attempts at producing an original series with packaged content. But sadly, it didn't really catch on like some had hoped it would, but I still loved seeing it from time to time when it did air back then.

It’s a genuine surprise to learn this was a regular program. My only, very dim, memory of it airing was on Thanksgiving, so I thought it was a really weird special. The only sketch I remembered was one of the animated interstitials with the turkey & a pilgrim based around a really strained take on a “Watch - Children at Play” sign. I’m sure part of the reason for my hazy memories is the content, but I’ll bet using “turkey” to mean “something dumb” well after that slang usage had fallen out of use has apart.

The other clips here took me back as well: the short about the mini-flying saucer, with Tomy wind-up robots as the aliens (one got flushed down a toilet, I recall). Those wacky British hospital sketches, like the one where it's revealed that one patient had an elephant stepped on his crotch, and another where they had to deal with a pipe stuck on a patient's, uh, unspecified body part.
      Also, R.I.P. Commander Cody.

I loved Turkey TV. It had great humor and I don't necessarily think the mixed up skits hurt it. I loved their use of stock footage for that skit about how the military was deployed to stop an old woman from stewing prunes. I loved the skit from England about the disgusting French restaurant where the head waiter warns us about the skit - and keeps breaking the forth wall to tell us to switch off. Shows like this just introduced us to things we weren't going to see anywhere else and I think that was the nature of early Nickelodeon. It is because of Nickelodeon we learned there were countries outside our own. It expanded our horizons. I'm sorry the programmers didn't see it that way. But at least they experimented which all companies need to do especially now.
