Zevon came to Richmond in November 1996. The place was called "The Flood Zone". My wife, a proper, well educated person . wanted to see Zevon , and we went. The warm up person had a problem of some note. Bruce Hornsby was present, and incredibly, played so that the show could continue. By the time Warren Zevon came on , it was nearly 11:00 pm. Both of us had to work the next day. I went to the stage and explained our situation. At that time Warren Zevon said "This is for Mrs. Graham" and performed "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner". When Zevon died in 2003, I was serving in the Middle East. I lit a candle to him. Long live Zevon!
I think it was Roland who compelled me to be a fan of Warren Zevon. As a youngster in Germany, I was smitten by the Song of Roland and even went to see his statue in front of the City Hall in Bremen. I can easily understand how an artist would become obsessed with the concept of heroic death
@@Icantthinkofagoodname090 from wiki: A Roland statue is a statue of a knight with a drawn sword, signifying the town privileges of a medieval city. Such statues exist in a number of cities notably in northern and eastern Germany, where they are often placed on the market square or in front of the city hall. There is a statue in Bremen. The song of Roland is a medieval poem.
Not to be an "ummm actshually" guy but that "Uzi" at 6:10 is actually an Ingram M10, more colloquially known as the "MAC-10" fitting someone like Zevon would own an uncontrollable weapon best fit for combat in a phone booth.
Thank you for the correction! I'll fully admit I have no idea about anything related to guns (so I don't talk about them). My excuse is the biography I read referred to it as a Uzi.
My favorite is Lawyers, Guns and Money, the story of the playboy who unintentionally mess with the wrong crowd is so funny. Also love Jungle Work, the hymn for the mercenary world.

I was in airborne school when he passed, and luckily, one of the cadre was a fan and sang Zevon cadence all day. I had bottomless motivation from that.
There is a movie called The Wild Gesse, with Roger Moore. And I think they were mentioned un Metal Gear Solid, which makes sense, since MGS is the biggest depository of pulp fiction. All these guys are truly fiction characters. Life, envious of Art, always tries to imitate it.
The wild Geese is a amazing movie. It's based on Major Mike Hoare, a true legend 👏. A man that lived to be one hundred years old and stomped out communist tyrants for a great bit of it.
I met an older guy once who was special forces and then a mercenary afterwards back then. That's a small world and everyone knows everyone and he claimed Roland and Van Owen were real. Said that what actually happened ass the two faked Roland's death and split the money. All his other stories checked out and if Zevon had help from an actual merc writing this I could see it being true
The similarities between Roland the headless Thompson Gunner, and the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow are interesting to me. The headless horseman was also a mercenary from Europe (Hessian). They are undead fighters roaming previously British Colonies.
On the very limited chance that someone is as interested in the Zevon lore as I am; I did some digging and found a post from the daughter of the previous owner saying that the Dubliner bar used to be located at Calle Isla de Cuba no.9 in Sitges, up the stairs, and is currently a tapas bar called NeM. Don't harrass the current owners of course, I just want to keep this information alive.
Amazing video but Mike Hoare, while approached by the Biafra government never went to fight for them and Che Guevara and Mike Hoare’s 5 Commando did indeed fight, however when Che realized that his Congolese troops weren’t really “in to the cause of true revolution” and when he realized he was on the losing side he fled to Tanzania
Jurassic Park: The Lost World. Two characters are named Roland amd Van Owen, with Roland being a big game hunter from Africa and Van Owen fucking with Rolands gun during a T-Rex attack. I don't know why I posted this, I just had to say. Plus I like the song.
that wasn't an Uzi, it's an Ingram M-10, the gun he sings about in "Jungle Work". for him to even have one during that era would have damn near meant he had to rub shoulders with someone like, say, Mitch WerBell. Now THAT is someone you should do a doc on.....
Its also a movie staring Richard Burton and Roger Moore that Hoare actually advised on too! Also Japanese novel, but that has nothing to do with mercenaries.
It's also called the Mozambique triple tap. It is common tactical practice to stagger/slow and enemy with a body shot and then finish with a headshot when you have any more stable Target picture
Its a bit late to make this point, but the uzi on the inner cover is actually an ingram mac 10, which warren name drops in the song "Jungle Work", about mercenaries in Central America. It's not very important, just a neat detail.
There's a poem about a frankish knight named Roland or Roldan, in Spain is known as "El Cantar de Roldan", and the end of the poem narrates how he was sent to Spain by Charlemagne or one of the descendants to help in the fight against the muslim moors, but after some battles he and his followers fell with the king of Navarre and during the retreat to France they're ambushed by the basques in the Pass of Roncesvalles, where the frankish force is destroyed to the last man.
K-mart was where we got 45 records. I bought the 45 of Warren Zevons hit Werewolves of London. The flip side was Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner. I truly liked it much better than his Werewolf song. I memorized it by playing it over and over. I still recall the lyrics 45 years later.
That is literally the worst explanation of katanga's separation from the rest of the Congo I've ever heard. I know you're just going for the broad strokes, but at least get those right
How many words did I mispronounce in this one? Only you can find out! Enjoy me mangling Norwegian in the last part of the video.
I counted 6.
te absolvo.
Sorry, but I couldn't get past your vocal fry.
Good presentation, though. Thanks, from a real Warren fan.
Sorry, one more thing. I think Roland was a Norwegian mercenary and not African.

The amount of topics cramed into all of your videos is astonishing even more so since its never diverges from the topic at hand

It seems that I need to listen to Zevon. We both enjoy the arabesque and the grotesque.
(Most of) his albums have my full endorsement!
Saw him at a small 100 table dinner club in Raleigh NC in spring of ‘78 on his excitable boy tour…been a fan ever since 😎🇺🇸

Another godly video, I hope your content will be known all across the internet!
If you don’t see the similarities in the skull on his album covers and his friend Hunter S “Thompson” you are blind.
I just listened to The Move the Moon, and damn, the man is good.

Plan to! I enjoy making videos a lot.
I've loved this song since I've heard it, and love the video. Illuminating. Thank you!
If I hear a song I like, I see how much I can learn about it. That is mostly what produces these videos.

As a Zevon fan I clicked right on this
Always a good day when you upload.
I wish I could do it more often.
Had no idea Warren’s dad was a mobster. Kind of explains a lot
Otherwise, an epic and well-crafted piece of documentary work, sir.
Outstanding.
These videos are god-tier
Zevon writes like the rest of us wish we could---insanely, hilariously. fearlessly, humanly.
Great video 👏
Love the Virgil there.
Great video. Learned a lot.
Fantastic song. His last song recorded- “Keep Me in Your Heart”, was so poignant. My funeral tune btw
Fantastic video
Thank you for watching!
Welp you've mentioned Zevon in a video essay that's all you need to do to get my subscription.
