As a mexican, I was really surprised of how Mignola and Corben captured the spirit of mexican spooky folklore. Everybody can borrow a mythological name and create a monster, a character or a McGuffin. But the team really portrayed the *vibe* of mexican ghosts stories; how weird and surreal they are. Ask any mexican and we all have a story of an uncle or a grandma that encountered a devil disguised as a black dog with red eyes, or a coven of witches gathering in the branches of willows. Mignola's story, weird as it reads, its in tone with this kind of folklore.
Best Hellboy comic ever. I'm a kind of amateur-newsman-critic of comics in México. Once upon a time, I was on a table with the new editor of a new editorial that was going to publish Hellboy again, but again (by third time) they wanted to start with Seed Of Destruction. And I sayed: "dude you better start with the BEST and the best is Hellboy in Mexico". They reconsidered and thanks to that, it was publish on Mexico. I'm so proud of that meeting. It is a sad and scary great comic.
I’ve been a big fan of Corbin since I first saw his work in a Heavy Metal that I snaked from an older uncle ( circa: 1980 ) and also a big fan of Mignola since his turn on the Rocket Raccoon mini-series back in the mid-ish eighties! Having them both together for the Hellboy work was a dream for me! Thanks for taking a closer look at this stuff (and at Corbin’s work in general ), good on yer boys👍! Thanks for your work guys, the very best to you!
This one and done comic is in my sweet spot! I’ve been with Corben since Den in Heavy Metal! Richard alongside Guy Davis,Duncan Fercredo, John Arcudi were all welcome to Hellboy by me because it really made for some great stories ! Thanks again, guys!
wow talk about timing - i got a copy of hellboy: the complete short stories vol 1, and read these very stories for the first time last night :) recently got a job in a comic shop here in sheffield UK, and i recommend this channel to everyone - keep up the good work
Interesting to hear Ed talk about Corben's inking as kind of blunt, the thing that struck me about Corben's Hellboy stuff was the textures (especially rendering those knobbly pebbly demon/zombie skin textures). I'm sure Corben leaned into those solid blacks because it's Mignola and Hellboy, but man. You look at some of the zombies and vampire faces, the rock textures on the walls, and even the vampire bat face reveal during the match, there's some great textural fine linework in there, and in Crooked Man too.
I love the Hellboy in Mexico story. The mystique and lore behind lucha libre translates so well not just to comics but to the folklore/ ghost story heavy world of Mignola

I had those Bigfoot issues, the story was pretty horrible but I loved the art. I was in and out of comics at the time and didn't know who Richard Corben was. They got ruined during a move, it makes me sad. I'll have to track them down
This IS the intro for the most recent Hellboy movie. He wrestles his partner who he realizes is a vampire and impales him into the turnbuckle. Great comic! Bad movie!

Corben's tools at this point are Sharpies. He also forwent penciling. Besides a couple preliminary sketches he went right in there.
The 2019 Hellboy movie it must of took inspiration from the comic book.

The more I look at Corben's work, the more I start to see the brilliance in his art. The dude is a GENIUS.
He truly was, a great visionary. Sad to see he is not a staple name among comics fans.
