I actually watched the first two episodes because I thought it was a comedy-satire like "The Romance of Tiger and Rose." It actually tries to be a drama and the plot is as ridiculous as Avenue X says. Despite the fine stunts and costumes, I don't think I can watch any more. What a waste.
Tbh it can still work and be good but like... make it entertaining or like slow burn the relationship and then boom make the physical contact hit differently. Bc it would make more sense and fitting if the build up was good tbh. If its just bland ass accidental kiss nuh-uh 🙅♀️
I just accept this as one of the Chinese TV tropes. Add the ML catching the FL and they may or may not twirl around in the air. I think these Chinese TV tropes actually set Cdramas from dramas from other countries.

If they wanted to keep the "Mary Sue" wish-fulfilling angle they could've just did a historically accurate take on Xiao Chuo and not do the Every Man Loves Her Love Triangle again? Like, she was a dowager empress that lead entire armies? She kicked pretty much every kingdom's ass in her general vicinity? The Song emperor had to go "I will give you 20k silver and 10k silk every year and acknowledge you as my aunt so can you please stop hitting us I am literally begging you" to get her to stop. Give us some of that
It's a drama that indeed does get better as it goes, but the overly forced narrative of the script kept insisting that the FL "isn't like any other girl". I was completely unsold in this narrative as the FL has only shown how childish and self-centered she had been with her actions...which is masked as bravery??

I mean what do you expect though ? This is Tang Yan drama. As pretty as she is, she usually choose a Mary Sue character when she played the Lead role. Even weiyang who supposed to be strong and full vengeance on the book, became a Mary Sue on the drama. I suspect her acting ability is the one to blame as well. She is a one note actress.

I like the drama. It's getting better and better after episode 10. There is absolutely no chemistry between the two leads but I like the political parts of the drama.

The legend of Xiao Chuo is awesome. It's entertaining, like the Story of Yanxi Palace. It's Entertainment and a darn good one that gets better and better. I love the legend of xiao chuo.
Story of yanxi is so much better. yanyan's character can't be compared to wei yingluo's. It's an insult to yingluo who is 100x more intelligent and independent than yanyan. A lot of decisions made by yanyan is out of her own selfish reasons and she would never get to where she is in the drama if it wasn't because of the men around her and hunian who she ends up effing over as well. Yanyan is such a classic mary-sue character...honestly the drama is ruined because of this character- I don't think I ever wanted a protagonist to fail so bad as much as I do yanyan's.

Wow, I started watching this with such high hopes since I loved Princess Weiyoung, but yeah the first episode made her character seem ignorant. Even later everyone just rescues when she gets in trouble and the romance is kind of underdeveloped, but I love Tiffany Tang, so I'm watching it on double speed with my hand on the fast forward button. Great rant AvenueX, love watching you tear it apart! : )
I made it to ep. 43 and a lot of crappy things happened as the story progress. like ep 40 when the king was very sick and met a beautiful girl, fell inlove with her became his concubine and impregnate her in that condition without telling the queen... man you are dying and still has the ability... hats off to mingyi 😂
Well historically he was really, really sick for years and still managed to get like 6-7 kids with his wife. So really, it might be like those girls who starve themselves so they can binge drink, except he lies in bed to recuperate so he can *hm* procreate. What? It's his kingly duty.

sometimes i think the drama's we see is a reflection of what ppl think. the production companies are obviously here to make money. they want to hire actors/actresses that ppl likes. they want stories that ppl want to hear. etc etc. there is so much mary sue, probably because there is a huge demand for mary sue in society. The later episodes are better. After the female lead gets married to the Emperor she gets smarter. The Emperor(Mingyi, they killed the crazy Emperor so Mingyi can take the throne) is more interesting. I also watch it to see how Charmaine Sheh(eldest sister) is doing these days. Needless to say, I much more prefer Charmaine's acting in TVB period dramas.
I really wished tang yan played more serious roles. Her only role where I really liked her was when she played zixuan from chinese palladin 3. That role gave her so much range. I dont know why she or her team chose to let her play these mary xue characters
I tried watching the first episode and literally couldn't even get past the scene where she tries to get his horse from him. So glad I quit while I was ahead.
This drama is SO GOOD hehehe the real historical narrative behind it is fascinating. The sisters' connection is emotional and Tiffany Thang is gorgeous. It has many mistakes, but then again, most c dramas have it. (The characters make up and big hairdos even while they are in bed is the worst for me). Yan Yan becomes a truly intelligent character early on, as soon as shes is not, you know, 15 years old. It kept me and my family hooked. Its worth watching and reading about the real historical figures!
I love your rant! I think if audiences want a silly but funny show, they would be far better off watching "My Unicorn Girl." It has appealing actors, a ridiculous plot (tiny Sebrina Chen posing as a male collegiate hockey player), silly tropes (athletes who keep tripping and falling into each other) and no pretensions to winning any awards. But I enjoyed it, along with "Su Yu" with the sublime Fiction Guo as the clueless hero. Sometimes we just need to laugh.

It exactly how I saw it too, very precise. Love your rant, it feels just like helping me rant. Also since most people are not protective of Tifanny Tang, with lots people also complaining like us, it's very easy to criticize her acting. I feel you are more careful and lenient with very popular stars because the fans cannot be offended. Like example Zhao Liying from Story of Minglan was also very bad, the only ok things to criticize can only be the lights and clothes. But who would really dare to mention the unrealistic acting like when Liying ran into bandits, cried like laughing and hopped on the bandit's head to bite his ear off, the other bandits watch laughing because she acts sexual. So unreal. The lead actor saved her but she didn't find it a relief, would she enjoy the bandits more. Then next thing she also wanted the freaken horse to find the emperor herself. The acting was a thousand miles lower than Tifanny but I'm shocked how easy it is Tifanny let us tell her our honest thoughts, she brushed it off well. This show makes Tifanny look bad but I compliment her in reality.

Having watched some of the later episodes (and clips of episodes), you are spot on. So much variation from logic and what could have reasonably happened. There are so many points where I have asked out loud, what the heck!? And I’m sure that would continue if I continue watching it.

Wei Yingluo is FAR MORE INTELLIGENT then Yanyan.
Yan Yan is a great character and the relationship between the sisters is far more important than the ML. The drama has amazing political plots

sometimes i think the drama's we see is a reflection of what ppl think. the production companies are obviously here to make money. they want to hire actors/actresses that ppl likes. they want stories that ppl want to hear. etc etc.
there is so much mary sue, probably because there is a huge demand for mary sue in society.

The later episodes are better. After the female lead gets married to the Emperor she gets smarter.
The Emperor(Mingyi, they killed the crazy Emperor so Mingyi can take the throne) is more interesting.
I also watch it to see how Charmaine Sheh(eldest sister) is doing these days. Needless to say, I much more prefer Charmaine's acting in TVB period dramas.
I dropped it after the market scene. I forgot about it. Thank you, I almost watch it again because I completely erased it from mind.

I really wished tang yan played more serious roles. Her only role where I really liked her was when she played zixuan from chinese palladin 3. That role gave her so much range. I dont know why she or her team chose to let her play these mary xue characters
I tried watching the first episode and literally couldn't even get past the scene where she tries to get his horse from him. So glad I quit while I was ahead.
I dropped the drama in the middle of the fight scene in ep 1. I felt these vibes
This drama is SO GOOD hehehe the real historical narrative behind it is fascinating. The sisters' connection is emotional and Tiffany Thang is gorgeous. It has many mistakes, but then again, most c dramas have it. (The characters make up and big hairdos even while they are in bed is the worst for me). Yan Yan becomes a truly intelligent character early on, as soon as shes is not, you know, 15 years old. It kept me and my family hooked. Its worth watching and reading about the real historical figures!
I am now inspired to also get a fan that says 槽多无口......so many opportunities to take it out lmao.

I love your rant! I think if audiences want a silly but funny show, they would be far better off watching "My Unicorn Girl." It has appealing actors, a ridiculous plot (tiny Sebrina Chen posing as a male collegiate hockey player), silly tropes (athletes who keep tripping and falling into each other) and no pretensions to winning any awards. But I enjoyed it, along with "Su Yu" with the sublime Fiction Guo as the clueless hero. Sometimes we just need to laugh.

It exactly how I saw it too, very precise. Love your rant, it feels just like helping me rant. Also since most people are not protective of Tifanny Tang, with lots people also complaining like us, it's very easy to criticize her acting. I feel you are more careful and lenient with very popular stars because the fans cannot be offended. Like example Zhao Liying from Story of Minglan was also very bad, the only ok things to criticize can only be the lights and clothes. But who would really dare to mention the unrealistic acting like when Liying ran into bandits, cried like laughing and hopped on the bandit's head to bite his ear off, the other bandits watch laughing because she acts sexual. So unreal. The lead actor saved her but she didn't find it a relief, would she enjoy the bandits more. Then next thing she also wanted the freaken horse to find the emperor herself. The acting was a thousand miles lower than Tifanny but I'm shocked how easy it is Tifanny let us tell her our honest thoughts, she brushed it off well. This show makes Tifanny look bad but I compliment her in reality.
I crawled my way back to Avenue x. Why I didn’t watch her review before wasting my time to watch this drama, I’ll never know. I’m so mad that I wasted precious brain cells. Ah! my poor brain. I don’t usually rant about Chinese dramas because I know what to expect. But this! This one made me cry because of how bad it was. I didn’t think it was possible to cry because a drama was so bad!!! My favorite actress is (Tiffany tang yan) when she played the strong intelligent female lead . the drama called "The princess weiyoung" omgosh i was like...yes! Best drama ever. I fell in love with her acting. But N E WAYZ...I was looking foward to this. But honestly..I couldn't even finish the 1st episode 😭 I tried to keep watching it hopefully it will get better. I was a bit confused. I believe every first episode should capture your attention. To make you want to see what will happen to the next episode. But unfortunately it didn't. So I have to pass on it 😞

Having watched some of the later episodes (and clips of episodes), you are spot on. So much variation from logic and what could have reasonably happened. There are so many points where I have asked out loud, what the heck!? And I’m sure that would continue if I continue watching it.
I've heard people say it gets better after 20 episodes or so but I won't waste my time with it.. I felt this rant because it's basically what I was thinking while watching episode 1 which I didn't even finish.. Gave up halfway and decided to forget about it
