I have a few different stereo systems in the house, but I do have a modest HT setup in the den that suffices.
I am using a $75 LG Blu-Ray, DVD, CD player (pretty much plays any disc we have here) through a $15 HDMI cable, and frankly I do not regret that purchase one bit. It was well worth saving several hundred dollars for that purpose, for me anyway.

The CD player produces a little better midrange frequencies, but I'm surprised how a budget DVD holds up.

I’m pretty sure the TTS button (text to speech) will stop the robot voice, it’s probably there because it doesn’t have a display to confirm the action selected 👍🏼
I could definitely hear the difference and the C was the best sounding to me personally.

I got them right. The bass was powerful with the CD player as a transporter. This was captured by my Momentums 4 even though I listened throughout Bluetooth.
    Edit:
And maybe the most important aspect that a cd player does, maybe not all is gapless playback.
My Denon cdc600 does and I still use it as a transport😉.

I am using a Pioneer dvd player for cd playback bought in 2007. However I am using the coax digital out and using an external DAC (schiit modi 3). The performance is good, very satisfactory. The dvd player never faced any repairs, not even a lens change. In between I used a NAD cd player for couple of years. Lot of problem faced, repairs, lens changed twice, analog out (Dac)on the cd player developed a non repairable problem.

I have a Pioneer DV-550 (2007 too) Bought it for £5 off market place. Although a flimsy feel, the draw is solid and slick on open/close, and inside i noticed a lot of Rubycon caps which suprised me, in a good way. The only gripe is the mirror front which makes it look a tad cheap.

@@CM-dw3gh I have a DV 300. It is old tech with no provision to play pen drive or memory card. The front is a silver and black combo which is decent enough. I use this to play only CD's. The switches on the component do not function properly so only remote use.

I feel at an average price point a branded dvd player do a decent job if routed through an external decent quality DAC. Good option for someone who want to build an audio system on a tight budget.

It is pointless buying a CD player (at any price) these days. Get a cheap PC (refurb will do) and a USB DVD reader, and a modern class 2 audio DAC with a moderately decent USB receiver and clock and modern DAC chipset from one of the usual suppliers (ESS, AKM, etc). They are incredibly linear. The driver will read the CDs at a high speed and the PC will buffer it and the USB chipset will buffer too, all error detected/corrected - it will be clocked out *under the control of the DAC clock circuits*; USB streaming is flow controlled by the receiver these days. Using an expensive digital transport and SPDIF or coax is a unidirectional flow with the signal and timing on the same connection and it is clocked by the transport and then the DAC must try to recover the clock from the signal to drive its timers. Its subject to timing variations and jitter - there's just one clock in the USB scenario. And you can rip the music to disk and replay easily without juggling pieces of plastic, and have playlists that span disks etc.

The Rotel definitely had a better sound stage but the DVD with external DAC did pretty well to be honest. The music wasn't great but that's just a matter of what you can get away with on the TH-cams.

      A was muffled,
      B was ok, not
so terrible in comparison to C, but C was clearly a win. Back to A, that internal DAC was cheaper and worse than those $5 cable dacs they have for phones lol

It's unfair to buy an obviously "bargain basement" DVD Player, and to say how crappy it's going to be! ... Is it claiming to be "high end?" ... This attitude reminds me of the food channel I follow, where people expect too much of inexpensive products, and then rubbish them! ... That DVD Player looks okay for the ridiculously low price. Great for kids bedrooms, or somebody who doesn't want to spend a fortune. Using it in Hi-Fi is questionable though!

Thank you. That was very interesting.
I am using the cheapest Sony DVD player as my CD transport, but it cost me twice as much as your ONN!
When/if I am feeling rich I may upgrade to a Sony Bluray player (twice as much again), so that I can play my few audio Bluray discs, although I don't expect that my old and abused ears will be able to appreciate any improvement in sound quality.
Meanwhile any suggestions for how to clean snot and public hairs off CDs?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but it seems you used the Marantz DAC for the Rotel as well as the ONN POS.
In other words, you're ONLY hearing that Marantz dac no matter what sound sample is played.
I'd bet a shit ton of money the internal dac or dacs in the Rotel are superior to the one in the Marantz.
Also, be advised DVDs and CD's are clocked differently.

Hi Marty, I still have an old pioneer dvd player (in the loft! )that I used to use in my set up as it supported SACD!! the on board DAC didn’t sound to bad either tbh. Although, I have now returned back to my trusty old MARANTZ CD50, which carries the good old trusty Philips TDA1541A DAC chip. Still sounds great all these years later, 💪💪👌👌ps very little noticeable difference when used as a transport. Listening on my qc35’s 💪💪👍 great vid mate. Thank you. 🙏🔥

One of the few DVD players that could compete with a decent, mid range CD player was the Sony DVP-S7700. It had a twin laser arrangement, one for playing CDs/CD-R and the other for playing DVDs. it was an awesome machine that sounded detailed and weighty with both formats. Build quality was superb; copper chassis and high spec components internally, it also weighed a ton. Put up against my Oracle CD2500, the Sony had slightly more bass presence, however, the Oracle had more space and depth of field.

Any Pioneer DVD from 1999 to 2005 (preferably "ELITE" models or a step down "DV- like 400 /440 etc") work wonders as a digi transfer to an outside DAC. Pioneer transport shelves are used in $1200 CD players at times, they are that good, plus they load fast, have great screens with a lot of info and lastly are very quiet. This all adds up to less vibration, jitter and electrical noises. I used to run my audio CDs from a Pioneer DV-440 coax to a Schiit Modi 3+ then a Loki then a Magni+ as my desktop headphone system and it was crazy hiFi, honestly. peace.

    Spend £20 on a DVD player then £100~£1000 on a DAC 🤦

  • @thethirdman225
    @thethirdman225 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I do think that there is a very slight difference between the amp DAC and the CD player but I wouldn't want to have to live on the difference. This comes from someone who is normally extremely cynical about such tests. I listened to this through headphones several times.
But I have always believed that the source - in this case a DVD player - was as near perfect as it gets. Digital either works or it doesn't. It's the signal processing that makes the difference. Otherwise, what would be the point of using portable DVD drives for ripping?
    So yeah, good test.

  • @45oldies10
    @45oldies10 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Biggest advantage a DVD player has when spinning cd's is the fact it handles scratches a lot better because of the way the laser reacts.
Bit of a long story but people can search the differences between cd lasers and dvd lasers.
Downside of a DVD player is that it's display has less functions.

Having a serious transport, clock, and dac component stack with some Transparent reference cables was the way to go and I used to only reserve DVD/Blu-Ray players for movies, now I use them as a reliable playback companion because at their best they can still reproduce excellent audio quality. DVD/Blu-Ray players also can play a wider range of audio (standard and High-Res music) encoded CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, and more with far less playback issues than even many flagship single-tray CD ensembles. The price of these machines for what they can do on the cheap would have been unbelievable technology many decades ago before I was born. 👍
