I thought my husband was a crazy prepper UNTIL the storm of the century, blizzard of 1993. I was pregnant with our fifth child and had no electricity for two weeks. We lived on a steep ridge and could not get off of it. We lived in complete comfort because of my husband's foresight. We had a generator which we turned on for one hour per day (one gallon of gasoline). We took baths (had propane water heaters), washed clothes vacuumed the floors, everything. Some people had no electricity for a month, and were unable to take a bath, wash clothes, and had very little food. I felt kind of guilty. We now prep for our neighbors who think we are "fringe" because of their lack of grip on reality. People become rather irritable when they do not eat for a while. We prefer to feed them rather than shoot them when they come to steal our preps. I am totally unashamed of being thought of as fringe. I am not on this Earth to be popular.

@@Keachybean I know, I wish more would say something along these lines as well, BUT I have found out that many who talk all pro-shoot-em ( or whose husbands r the ones who talk that way, more flippantly ) really do plan to share as they can, just they realize that wayyyy more people r gunna be hungry in many scenarios, than they can have ability to feed, and these same folks do seem to feel quite entitled to what others have worked hard for, in addition to their otherwise also very busy, hard-working, lives. Tho, again, the Christians oughta be a little more prayerful, and ready to do good as possible with a smile & a prayer for the food to miraculously not run out, imo ( as a Christian myself - but I admit I get fed-up with people too. And it will be very hard for me to share, then we all go to the aid tent together, as I have allergies & other issues, and DO NOT want to be eating what is handed out. In the case there is any such aid available.) .

We are seniors and live in a remote area of WV. We have the same exact view of things in our small area. We would rather feed our neighbors, who are mostly seniors also. Since earlier in the year, alot more of our neighbors are preparedness minded. Bravo, if more people had your mindset, our country would be a lot nicer place to live👍

I can't prep for all those who don't. But I have been able to share. This covid-19 had hurt many of our younger families. I've been lucky to have been able to share some of my hens. Two families with small children now have means to fresh eggs. It's the little things we all can do to help. In time it will be good for the whole community we each call home. We can do the same with seeds and know how.

Bri, you really could do a whole series of videos geared to newer homesteaders and farmers, or those who are trying to be, showing how you plan your food for a year. Like, right down to how you decide what to grow or raise on the homestead, and what you buy. How often different things get used, how do you plan meals to make sure you rotate through all your stored items and keep meals interesting, how much food do you calculate per person. How do you even know what you need to store the food in, what makes you decide to buy another freezer instead of buying more canning jars and building shelving. We all can look at what we currently eat and do the simple math version, but if we're transitioning from all store bought to home grown, food preservation and bulk buying, we're going to need those new skills, its a different mind set. Part of your "grocery" budget is seeds, soil amendments and livestock feed, really. And then follow up with skills like how to use dried beans and other things a lot of people probably dont know how to cook, or use in their cooking.

If you don't want to run to the store every week for things you don't grow, you buy in bulk. When you are poor, you buy as much on sale as you you can afford. It is just a smart thing to do. Whether or not you are a serious prepper (regardless of your reasons) there's a lot of useful information here. Buying in bulk is definitely cheaper as long as you can store it without spoiling as so much food is wasted because people don't store it correctly. It also makes sense to have a store of food in case of bad weather, loss of income etc and there is nothing quite like a home cooked meal with friends or gifting a meal to someone who needs it. Looking forward to learning more about this from you.

How funny, never thought I was considered a prepper. My great grand parents, grand parents and Mom and Dad taught us all, down the line, on how to preserve the food we grew and the harvesting of our animals. When we bought our home we did as they did......we built shelving in the back of every closet in the house. It was used to store all our caning goods and dry goods too. The garage had shelving from top to bottom holding onions, garlic, corn, sweet potatoes and tons of regular potatoes, herbs and so on. Seeds every where, drying and packaged for the spring and fall plantings. The freezers had all the meat, fruit and veggies. My favorite freezer because of the frozen grapes, lol. They were like candy to me! We did barter for meat because our land wasn't large enough for grazing animals. But it was a whole animal that we bartered for every year. We had fruit orchards and veggie gardens and that was used as money to get the meat we needed. Fish was plenty because of the large deep creek that ran through the land. Now that we are great grand parents, we do like you and buy in bulk only the items we use a lot. We still have meat birds and hens for eggs. And small raised gardens for veggies and 20 fruit trees. We have family that helps during the fruit harvest. It's to much for us in our old age. Thank you for sharing, it reminded me of the days way back when it was just a way of living. Love and Blessings from south Texas.

This year I think has taught us to use due diligence. You guys are smart to do what you can. Due to space we can only store for 3-6 months. We are townies, so we can't grow our own meat. We buy organic from a local market.
Not sure how to initiate the process but hope to connect with some local farmers to see if we could share raising some meat.
I have 3 new raised garden beds ready for next next year and I hope to do better.
Word to the wise... I know you want to be transparent and show the daily true lives of people like yourselves, but I think you need some form of security at your homestead. I haven't done much preserving in the way of pickling, fermenting, or canning yet, though I did buy various sizes of canning jars last summer, anticipating growing lots of veggies. Unfortunately I hadn't prepared the beds in the previous fall, & then had injuries that held me back from extensive yard work, & still limit me, but if I had a good amount of freezer space, I could make the soups & stews I enjoy eating, & then freezing them in smaller portions, which suits my life today.
The one soup I routinely make is a dried bean & veggie base, which I can change up in many ways. I usually cook it up in a large pot then dole out portions to freeze.
When I want to make a new batch based upon veggies on sale or that will come from my next garden, I can add a frozen portion or two to heated up boxed organic broth to heat up with more fresh or self frozen veggies or meats, to defrost along with the container of homemade condensed soup base. It thickens after cooking the beans in fresh water, for a long enough time that it takes the dry beans to cook.
I use an old French method of cooking beans which removes the chemicals that cause gas 1st. After that process, I can begin to cook the veggies with the beans, starting with the hardest veggies 1st, added when the beans are nearly cooked., followed by the smaller cut veggies, along with herbs & spices, which are added near the end. With the veggies it makes its own broth, but sometimes it thickens up so much, when stored in the fridge, and that's when I'm willing to try a trusted boxed organic broth when reheating a thickened soup. It's a good way to use up small amounts of leftover meats & veggies too.
It's yet another way to preserve food, in the form of home made vats of soups & stews stored in plastic containers in numerous sizes. They keep for a few months when frozen.

Our whole block is prepping now and our neighbors have started growing crops for each season which leaves me wanting to do the same.
Right now we’ve been bartering bread for little bags here and there of their vegetables.
I’m having issues growing & have no idea where to start with it.
I’ve found a lot of people have the mentality to not help others start in the community.
I bought the seeds and am currently trying to figure out where and how to start the seeds and when to plant them and in what area of the yard and soil to use?? I live in California. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Our children I feel are going to become a whole generation of preppers. It would be nice if it started with me.
I learn by seeing so I just really appreciate it.
Where do we get the buckets from? What are good books to get? For the canning and jarring where do we get the supplies for that? And again what are some good books?
Starting from the bottom here. I’ve been buying from the stores week by week to stock up on small boxes, bottles and cans and this way just seems way more practical and cheaper! Thanks again for the awesome video.

Granny bought meats & breads on sale and froze them, canned goods on sale and stored those. They always fished. We bartered with neighbors when they went hunting. Everyone can stock up even if its only $5 or $10 worth every time you buy food. Go for basics. And try to get a small variety. Pasta, beans, lentils, rice, even a few canned meats, and fish. Then buy the items that turn these basics into great tasting dishes and a little will feed a lot of people.I have an extremely tiny income and I've been able to put back some food basics. I may not be eating exciting gourmet dishes, but I will be eating a smal variety of foods should there come a time the stores do not have food. Which I think with everything that has happened & what is happening right now, that this winter will be our first test to see if we have prepared well enough to survive.

@@nonamepainter I think what Jesus Loving Freedom Fighter is saying that loose lips sink ships. Sometimes people brag about what they are doing. Her husband should be concerned about her “feeling” safe. That is one of his responsibilities as a husband. Certainly, they will probably share with loved ones. Have a great day.

YET AGAIN! Y'all have opened my eyes to some realizations. I will be coming back to this video that's for sure! My wife and I love your channel and what your family is about/stands for. We just moved to the midwest and we're trying to find a home and start our own place. You are right though, there is no better time to learn the trade than now. Thanks as usual 😉

Since you're not living at the farm, aren't you concerned that someone will empty your freezers while you're gone? Just wondering

Hi Art and Bri! Thank you for the information! I live in the city and I started stocking up on food 2 months ago. I live in a 566 sq foot house so I've had to get very creative as to where I store my food as I only have 1 closet in the entire house but I'm doing it though! I've learned how to pressure can meat and dehydrate fruits and vegetables! Will you keep sharing about food storage please. I knew about the gamma lids and the food grade buckets I even bought 90 mil food grade buckets because you can see through the 70 mil buckets didn't think that was thick enough but didn't know about the mylar bags ( I needed that ) much success to ya'll!

I normally just watch your channel for pure entertainment but I want to thankyou for this video. Really has me thinking about food storage and the different things I can do. At my parents we already have an xtra fridge and a seperate freezer in the basement and my mother is a smart shopper but at the same time this video shows me that there is so much more that we cld do (especially during this pandemic) Weve had to all be tested this past week, my grandmother is in the hospital with covid. we were already wearing masks and taking this pandemic serious but now it has made it even more a reality how serious we really need to be about not running to the grocery store needlessly. I was never into the (conspiracy theory prepper idea) but you've laid it out in a logical reasonable way and I appreciate that. 👏

Yes yes yes! I love this! I store dry goods also, and I love the charity aspect. Not just for a large emergency, but what if my neighbor gets laid off and needs food? I can give them a whole grocery load! Love your channel!
