    Interesting to learn more about the Charade. It does have a lot in common with the Matiz but I suppose that extra torque gives it an edge. my 2008 Chevrolet Spark passed its MoT on Wednesday. I've had it 11 years and so far it has never failed an MoT.

    My 53 reg silver 3 door charade sadly passed away 2 years ago but I had that car for 4 years and it gave me nothing but fun. I've owned mx5s, clio 172s and civic type Rs but that charade is right up there. Took the plastic intake pipe to the air filter housing off and it sounded incredible, that's how it stayed for 4 years. 100 % reliable passed all the mots in my possession and I hammered it every day, great in the snow. One of my fave cars. Enjoy yours Hubnut! It was replaced by a 02 Ignis which is good but not as fun as the mighty Charade

    My parents first car was a Charade Diesel Turbo C284GHL - never broke down but I remember there was always emission problems and occasional black smoke that put it in the garage a few times. its funny, even though there were a few revisions over the years it was a car you just never saw on the road... maybe because there were no dealerships anywhere close.

    • @hunchanchoc8418
      @hunchanchoc8418 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christineayres7199 Fair points. My car cost £650 and I've added 77k miles to it in 3.5 years with honestly negligible repair costs, so cheap doesn't have to be unreliable if you strike lucky (!) Yes a Leaf or Zoe would be good, if it matches closely with your usage pattern and you can afford the purchase price. Neither of those considerations apply for me, unfortunately ;-)

    The Daihatsu Charade was briefly sold in the USA starting in 1990...they also sold the Rocky here. I remember someone in my apartment complex having an abandoned Daihatsu Rocky around 1993-1994...I think that was just around the time that Daihatsu abandoned the US market. The Charade was about the same size as a mainstay of automotive history in the 1990's in the USA, the Geo Metro (which was a rebranded Suzuki Swift sold in Chevrolet dealers). Suzuki had entered the US automotive market in 1987, with the Samurai (which I believe was called the Jimny everywhere else).

    Like you, Ian, I've always extolled the virtues of a 3-cylinder engine. I owned from brand new the first series Daihatsu Charade in 1980, in the glorious shade of frog green, followed by my next new Charade which was a white 1983 model. Both had 5 speed manual transmissions. My son has owned a 1 litre 3-cylinder 2013 Suzuki Alto for the last 10 years and has had no trouble. I remember Daihatsu claimed the ideal capacity per cylinder for fuel economy and performance was 331cc, hence their 993cc engine capacity.

  • @mervynprice7009
    @mervynprice7009 ปีที่แล้ว

    I reckon the difference in fuel economy between your driving & Miss Hub Nut's is "Wah-wah". I think that is how you explain it when you are enjoying your bit of motoring fun. I think each time said equals possibly 7 MPG less, it proves "Less is more". The 20mph speed limits do not appear to be so disruptive as everyone believed. The mud on the roads looked a bigger speed restriction. You even had to wash Shemi before Miss Hub Nut was allowed to look at her. Pembrokeshire did look the Bees & Es's for this time of year. A part of Wales I have many happy memories of. Mostly, mothballed Flying Boats. Like all your Video's, I really enjoy them.

Why can’t a car manufacturer make a small, lightweight, fuel efficient car to properly seat 5 people (no more, no less), carry enough luggage for a weekend away, park in a supermarket parking space or garage, cruise at 70-80mph but no more, be easily repaired - both mechanically and cosmetically, and be sold for a sensible price………you know, like small cars used to be before they turned into gargantuan gizmo laden rip-offs!

    To help with running out of electricity, have you thought of a power bank? You could keep it charged up from the 12v outlet (what we Old Farts are inclined to forgetfully call the cigarette lighter), and although not the most convenient, there are bits of down time during the day, I'm sure, when you could boost the microphones and phone. Nay, further, you have a small Lithium battery you use on car batteries: some of those have USB outlets to charge Devices (sounds creepy).

    Which form of variable valve timing?Does the cam itself advance or retard or are there separate lobes the cam uses? Its surprising how much grunt a 1 litre lump can provide.Lotus proved that way before variable timing on the fly.

      Believe it's adjustment of the cam itself.

    Isn't the engine the basis for the three cylinder still used in millions of Toyota Aygos, Yaris X etc?

      I'm not sure how much carry-over there is. The Aygo engine has a chain driven cam.

    Confession - at the 7’13” mark , the road on the left ‘Butts Lane’. About a mile down we found several huge polystyrene boulders painted green/grey, probably for a movie set dumped in the quarry. One evening we set them across the road on a blind bend and waited in the hedgerows to see what happened. I apologise now to the three drivers that encountered them.
