argcam29 People are upset s out “mixing politics with music”, or so I was told on the last episode (as if this music and all these scenes weren’t birthed out of a political context, and aren’t still functioning in one.. lol). That’s my guess, anyway. It’s just the times we live in, my friend. People are very bothered, even upset (imo also threatened) by folks talking about race, and their own experiences relating to race and identity. If the UK, and rest of Europe, is anything like my country (US), many people see this as racist.. lol
You can't just 'leave politics out of music'. For some people it isn't that simple. For those who believe that they (or their parents or their grandparents) have suffered due to systemic racism, whether in the past or in the present, they rightly feel incredibly strongly about these issues. If music is meant to be an avenue for personal expression, then how on earth can you be expected to 'leave politics out of music' if those politics have had an enormous role in defining your identity and your family/community's identity? These aren't stupid people, they're not completely delusional and brainwashed - as you can see in part 2 of this documentary, racist violence is still fresh in the memories of countless caribbean people. Please get out of your bubble and try and look at things from a different perspective.
And isn't it ironic that this is all in the context of a Boiler Room video? The same Boiler Room that is a platform for sharing dance music and hip hop/grime both of which were invented and pioneered by black people. They listen to this music and enjoy a musical and artistic culture by black people and yet don't want to hear black stories. Funny.
