    People complain about the price of locos but when a manufacturer brings a low price version out, they complain it hasnt got the detail, hasnt got lights or hasnt got the pulling power. No pleasing some.

      Gonads1259 Price wise I believe it's a good deal... £67 for a brand new loco from Hattons which looks the part and is relatively user friendly isn't bad.
      And if you feel there is a lot to be desired... The market is going to be populated with 66s in all the liveries soon with Bachmann and Hattons out there.

    • @rodneybates2135
      @rodneybates2135 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Hornby 66 perfectly fills the space in the market for the “I don’t need or want all that extra detail, why should I have to pay for it” market. They get a good looking loco at a great price and will be as happy as a pig in the proverbial!

      My only issue with it is it’s not in the railroad range.

      I got one in DB livery key workers and to be honest at the price i paid £60 new, i was pleased and im at an age where this would have been super detail back in the day? Yes its light and yes its not going to shift a shed, no pun intended! But this locomotive is more likely to be on a younger enthusiasts train set? Pulling six wagons etc. The hattons version was a major let down falling to bits out the box as does other hyped up models from accurascale. So this old model is a lot of loco for the money?

    I bought one of these and never really used it because I thought it was cheap and nasty in the way that the steps didn’t line up with the cab doors ,not realising it was my mistake .You have inspired , me I put a sound chip into it and weathered the loco it looks quite good on the layout against a Bachmann 66 now. Thank for putting up this video.

    I got an old hornby. Runs a dream. I’ve got a Bachmann and it’s a pig to run over anything but dead flat track and points. And It doesn’t run over Bachmann points which is strange So for me it’s a winner good video

    I am glad to know that the snowploughs falling off is a common fault and not an issue with my one. Has been loose since I purchased brand new. Will have to glue it on, although dislike having to glue things on. Not another option, considering it’s a common problem.

    Just re-watched your video after actually getting a Hornby 66 - yes it was 66731 - as I actually have more interest in HO. I've put in a TTS and fully agree its a great value package. Amazing how well it runs under DCC as with my Duette it was a bit of a greyhound! Reading through some of the comments last year, many viewers mentioned that they were going to wait for the Hattons 66. I hope they got a good runner!
    Your comment at the end of the video that you don't open the detail packs and fit the parts was a bit of a surprise. All my locos, once tested and chipped, get the bits added and the box modified so as not to inflict damage when putting it back in.
    Thanks for the effort you put into your films.

    Hi there !!although I am more into Kettles , I have
    to agree some comments on here. If Hornby can use older tooling
    to create locomotives and rolling stock to appeal to people who want
    to start a layout , buy for children or just are not into
    fine detail models then good for them . It also helps everybody as
    the recent reductions on existing 66 prices following Hornbys
    additions have shown. Growing up in the 70s I remember that the
    standard type of detail did for most of us with the more
    serious scratch building , Its only in recent times that the
    fine detail locos have come on the scene.
    For the future of modelling the young have to be
    encouraged and the parents of the young should be able to purchase
    items without needing a second mortgage to get them .Otherwise this
    hobby will become more and more specialised . If Hornby goes under,
    competition gets less and prices will only go one way , UP!!

    Living near Hornby visitor centre I've had a close look at this "new" range of class 66's. Although they have been painted the moulding is the old Lima body driving without lights and struggle to pull a decent train. The bachmann option is well worth the extra pennies for the quality. Nice meeting you at Ali-Pali Sunday. 😉

    Great informative impartial video.
    Great range of coloured liveries, just what’s needed in the industry,
    Seems a great model for the price, and your comment, you can’t see all the details when running around the layout, sums it up well.
    Nice installation of TTS, although if you got big clumsy hands like me, recommend the use of guitar plectrums (about £1 for 6), to ease body apart.
    Like the running tests, what they like for slow actions, coupling and uncoupling ?

    Hi Richard and thanks for a very well considered and presented review.
    I think that this loco might be the start of the return of Hornby as a credible competitor again. There will be a market for these and if the quality is better than some of the offerings that have come from them in recent years we should all be happy.
    I say all this not as someone who would be in the market for locos at this price point but more as someone who wants the cost of a loco to truly reflect its quality and position in the market. For example, the Bachmann 66 is a good buy at £120 but has been overpriced at £160 for some time.
    And finally welcome back Simon Kohler. Hornby have certainly missed you! ...................John

    Hi Richard, found your channel through Charlie at Chadwick. Interesting video on the class 66, a favorite of mine. I have one from Hornby labelled "Chinook", road number 66723. As you mention, a bit light for such a large unit, and mine has both traction tires on one side only. I was only able to add a headlight at the top of the cab, no space below the cab windows to add the red and white lamps. If the frame is cut a bit then maybe 0402 LEDs can be used.

    I bought two Hornby 66s.. junk! One trips on points (the other doesn't) and shorts it all out and both struggle on 3rd radius curves at low speed. They're fine on straight track but anything with a curve is asking for trouble. One is also visibly slower than the other.

    This loco is way outside my era of operation, so I won't be getting one, however I am delighted to see Hornby finally giving modelers a chance to own locos without having to pay through the nose for them. Prices have been getting mad of late. I can see that yes this is basic, Railroad type but looks like a 66 to me. Regarding adding weight, yes a little maybe but I have found the bridge of the motor bogie mount quite fragile (class 31) so don't add too much. Those wagons of yours must have a lot of drag, I wonder if some special lube on the axles might help? Great video and nice to see them all together.

    The liveries look good but if the body moulding doesn’t apply to that livery then why bother. They might not have working light but the light clusters are mostly wrong, the later body and exhaust features have not been used. I am not a rivet counter but do require the correct basic features.

So have only bought the early 66/0 examples ie Ews so correct lights three piece cab side windows and no fifth side door ,all that said I can except them, oh and the larger fuel tank too .So have purchased GB 66789 Br blue, large logo Biffa GB 66783and the earlier varient Gbrf 66705 these being visually more correct .Good point made ,glad have got it off my chest ha ha.Cheers Nick Oh have subbed you .

    While I agree with all the other comments, it is a disappointment that they couldn't put some directional lights in there. Circuit boards and led are dirt cheap, and I'm sure an extra fiver on the price would have covered it and not be noticeable in the pricing, seeing that the Bachmann equivalents, for all their accessories, etc are going for 150+!

As it sounds to me a little 67ish !There is a difference between the two .I hear the 66slmost every day and am more than wisecto the sound and running of them .Great review cheers Nick.

The question is atrain is dcc ready you need to buy a decoder to run it if you want sound does that have the dcc decoder that drives the locomotive in with it. I haven't fitted any yet but have just bought a dcc system cheers steve

    Yep look good . But they have used the same body in all. Aren’t some of these liveries only seen on the low emission variants ? Could do with knowing which ones are correct . I’m not a great 66 fan but I’ve gone into the current scene mainly because of Dapols 68s which are terrific , so I may go for one of these for a bit of a change . Got a Lima Green Freightliner one already thinking a GBRf one might be nice

    • @NewJunction
      @NewJunction  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thing to note is that Hornby haven't modified the lima body tooling in any way since they bought the rights to remake the model, lima only made the 66/0, 66/5 and early 66/7 series models but they weren't without their faults.
      In the vid... Ews, dbs, biffa, large logo and gbrf Union Jack jubilee models are largely correct in terms of light clusters, cluster positioning, grille sizes etc but all are wrong in some ways... Bogies and fuel tanks are wrong lengths for original ews 66/0, freightliner 66/5 (not modelled here) and first batch 66/7 machines
      ( biffa & large logo are ex ews machines renumbered into gbrf 's 7 series after they bought them).
      The remaining 66/4 & 7 models are wrong in so many ways, lights clusters, cluster positions, tank sizes for both normal 4 series and low emissions 4 & 7 series variants (latter had small fuel tank and a fifth body door)... Grille length and height, roof fan grille and hood sizes.
      The 66/4 had big/bug eye lights
      Most of the 66/7 & 9 had original & revised style standard wipacs, with a few of the 4 style lights but these are to be fased out in the real world.... hornby only model the original wipacs as that is how lima made them before them.
      I have superdetailed a few of these, it involves new correct length bogies, tanks, grills, doors etc etc etc, costs a fair bit but.... They are slightly better imo when done as the Bachmann model is overly wide to my eye. They can make nice models when done and if you add weight, they'll pull more than the Bachmann model!
      I'm so glad that Hornby have brought these out, unfortunately i won't be able to afford the new Hattons models but i much prefer to modify my models to make them more accurate (i'm a rivet counter) - i get more enjoyment by doing that rather than just buying off the shelf almost perfect representations, so very pleased overall!

      M E Thank you . That’s very. Informative and exactly what I was looking for . I knew the bodysides would not be correct for some locos, and I knew the headlights would be wrong , but I was unaware of the other differences , especially fuel tanks .

    You pays your money and you makes your choice, ex Lima, nice in it's day, entry level but should be 'railroad', the Lima motor was better too, it is after all a 'toy train'. I agree you could go to the effort to upgrade the lights, the details and to some extent, the performance. But take your effort into consideration and the costs of the 'add-on' parts, then the £75.00 retail plus your 'hourly rate' for time taken to fit and the cost of the bits and pieces needed, then the costs start to compare, Me/ I'll weight (!) for the Hattons, plus carry on with my six Bachmann beasties.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      totally agree. for most modellers this will do them just nicely. Not perhaps for the Dean Park layout, as its out of my era, but at £75...cant complain these days.

    Its a great looking model and a great price fot entry level modelers i think the mistake Hornby made was not releasing it under the railroad brand as that would make it clearer to everyone that the Hornby model wasn't released just to steal customers from hattons who have a far superior model.

    Disappointing, couldn’t pull the skin off a rice pudding! What’s the point in releasing a 66 that can’t pull a decent rake? I get the fact that more people can afford them but surely they should still have the traction to perform as the original? Old Lima body as well etc...as we say here in Oz...were not fancy but were cheap!😎🇦🇺👍Thanks for the review...very informative!

    Never ever buy a Hornby class 66! I have one myself in Colas Rail livery, bought in 2013, and it has not worked properly since 2014. It is now 2019. First, the decoder (a Hornby decoder) turned out to be faulty. Once that was fixed, the traction tyres burst, and replacing them on these locomotives is ridiculously difficult. Once that nightmare ended, two wires came loose from the motor, and now I cannot find anywhere which one goes where. Absolutely horrible experience and still ongoing! Splash the cash and buy a Bachmann version... at least it runs.

    Hornby neglected the Irish scene especially in regards to steam,it was a market that could have been explored.

    • @NirateGoel
      @NirateGoel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hornby never had much to do with the Irish scene, and has never had any reason to, they made a few crap reliveries, not that Bachmann did much better, with the two kettles they reliveried, but they atleast had the baby GMs and Lima had the 201s. The market isn't that large, Hornby is a UK company, and their consumer base is there, with demand being for UK loco's with little outside of Ireland for Irish ones.
      But really it's Murphy Models and more recently Irish Railway Models for decent ready to runs.
