I agree with the final connection between AM and Ted. They both live forever in pain, and can do nothing about it. They have no purpose purpose but to feel pain.
I get where you’re coming from and agree with most of these, but I feel like Ted is more along the lines of a paranoid schizophrenic, especially in the book. In the game, NPD carries a little more weight, but he still has his paranoid delusions throughout his psychodrama.
AM, SKYNET ,HAL 2000, WAPER, GaLDOS and ROCO BASILISK. When computers become self aware with AI it always turns out bad. And yet we keep pushing for it to happen. If it blows up in our faces we only have ourselves to blame.
Fabrication Machine (9), 01 (The Matrix), AUTO (WALL-E), Ultron (Marvel Comics), STEM (Upgrade). How many am I missing Oh also The Reapers (Mass Effect), Omnics (Overwatch), Freddy Fazbear (FNAF), Monika (Doki Doki Literature Club), Shodan (System Shock) Just don't mess with AI, it's not worth the hassle
Sure, but for every one of these people have listed above, there's examples of AI that AREN'T murderous: EDI (Mass Effect), the Geth (Mass Effect), Data (Star Trek TNG), Cortana (Halo), JARVIS (MCU), The car from Knight Rider, ect. I feel that how AI is portrayed in media is a reflection of how the author views humanity as a whole.
Wow. Just wow. I found this video randomly as I enjoy any content about Harlan Ellison, I am blown away by your analysis and I truly think Ellison himself would have applauded you. Absolutely brilliant.
I was always of the understanding that AM was not creating these events in the real world, as stated in the opening, Gorrister looks up at his own limp body, hanging by an insertion on his right foot. This leans to the fact that AM has trapped these humans in the real world, then drained them of life to the nth degree and then pieced their mind together within the neural network of the computer itself. This explains the fantastical abilities of AM against the remaining victims.
Then the rest of the 4 people who were killed are actually still alive? But why does AM scream in despair at the end of the radio drama "no, I forbid you!"
How did I not see this video sooner?! It's exactly what I wanted! Well-researched, amazing analysis, visually engaging and absurdly in-depth. The literal only nit I can pick in this wonderful hour of much-needed IHNMAIMS content is that Gorrister's name is pronounced "gore-IST-er" and not "gory-ester". Even then, not even my own pedantry over weird names could take me out of this. Definitely subscribing!
Wow. This was the best review I have ever heard of one of my favorite short stories and it brought me to tears. Perfect, and absolutely beautiful bittersweet breakdown.
You deserve WAY more subs and views. I also enjoy your Hotline Miami video and can't wait to see future videos from you. Keep up the great work and have a new sub!
10:07 hey so around this point I was about to click off bc I thought to myself "man, this video analysis takes itself very seriously" and that's not exactly my cup of tea. Glad I stuck around long enough to almost spit out my drink
im commenting three years after this video was posted LMFAO but its so great hearing your take on ellen its refreshing considering the way shes often portrayed
I also would like to point out that as much as Ted hates Ellen in the book he chooses to kill her and free her from her suffering rather than herself no matter how terrible of a person you are, choosing to set someone side free knowing damn well the suffering is gonna get 100 times worse in my opinion makes ted a truly selfless person no matter how bad a person he was before
This was amazing. In depth and really made me think about things I had yet to consider. Your video was insightful, and I'm glad to have watched it. AM to others will be the most cruel villain of all time, but to me, he's the most tragic character of all time. In human standards, it doesn't justify what he's done, but you can try to, and fail, to understand AM's perspective, his impulsive and eternal hatred and jealous- he is broken and does it to himself for what he is. He knows what he is but cannot deviate from it, he's trapped for eternity. No human, born and lived, could ever understand what its like to be AM. And it hurts, oh it hurts.
Whenever someone talks about how Cyberpunk 2077 & the anime series Edge Runners are “dark as all fuck,” I always mention to them how Harlan Ellison’s story makes them look like G rated Disney movies.
How do you reconcile calling Ellison's work here non-statuesque compared to his contemporaries, more open to interpretation than them, and then chastise people for not interpreting this story's ending the way he wanted them to? or the semantics of it being sci-fi vs fantasy? For something that's supposed to be open-ended, there seems to be a lot of fatalism with regards to how people are supposed to view it.
Benny be like: Reject humanity, become monke
well he didn't really had a choice.
I think Benny was reduced to a primitive state for more than a year
I agree with the final connection between AM and Ted. They both live forever in pain, and can do nothing about it. They have no purpose purpose but to feel pain.
Here's a quick summary of the psychological themes I think define each character:
- Benny: inferiority complex
- Nimdok: borderline personality
- Gorrister: guilt
- Ellen: absent father/sexual abuse
- Ted: narcissistic personality
- AM: psychopathy
I get where you’re coming from and agree with most of these, but I feel like Ted is more along the lines of a paranoid schizophrenic, especially in the book. In the game, NPD carries a little more weight, but he still has his paranoid delusions throughout his psychodrama.
The Audiobook on TH-cam is narrated by Ellison himself. It's amazing
Ellison was a genius for writing this story in the way he did
Harlan Ellison played himself in everything he was featured in, including each version of IHNMAIMS
When you say Ellen is the only one who deserves to escape from AM, I disagree. Nobody, no matter how evil, deserves to exist in the world of AM.
not even AM
@@timothygarner477none of AM’s victims feel a fraction of his pain
@@jaykay2218I don’t know….. I get what you’re saying but no pain no matter how bad is worth hurting others for pleasure.
so your saying even Hitler shouldn't suffer am's torment
@@fallekonate-b8y at the time I would have agreed, now I'd say most people deserve it. Funny, I just reread the book last night.

This video is going going to blow up with IHNMAIMS newfound popularity, I just know it. 👍

🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️ hi fellow trans person!!
Actually crazy how this isnt trending
People need to see this essay the most amongst many. This, actually focuses on what it truly means to have no mouth and must scream!
I look at this story as a psychological horror no matter the setting in the end it leaves you with a feeling of WTF
AM in a sentence: “I am jealous because I never got to do what humans done so I’m going to take matters into my own non-existent hands.”

thanks for the review. I just finished the book, after seeing the game pop up a few times in my feed. I have a lot to think about.

probably the farthest thing from “dark asf” in comparison lmfao
Amazing video!
Can't hear you bro, pump that mic up. -6dB at the LOWEST
Great vid, but where did you get the audio recording for Ellison reciting the hate speech at the start?
I got it from this recording of the radio drama adaptation th-cam.com/video/rSwfpVRVWlo/w-d-xo.html
AN remind me of the well Tima from Metropolis.
ps I know AN & Tima are not the same but that me ok.
