Oh Emma so cute bless her, I watched every episode of "watching" I absolutely loved it that I was addicted. I watched all the series. 1987. My dad used to be in stitches with Emma Wray. "Brenda" with her one liners. So made me think of my Dad when I saw "watching" on here. I miss those days brought back many happy memories.
I think it was smart further on the show went that they gave the side characters a lot more screen time. As the first two seasons were just really Malcolm and Brenda in full focus with Pamela and Mal's mom and Perry Fenwick's character having bits and pieces in episodes. Addling the Likes of Pamela's husband and Mal's Aunt was smart for further seasons. I do think the enjoyment of this show is really down to if you buy into the Brenda's humour. If you don't you really struggle in why Malcolm puts up with Brenda at times. Having a charismatic and likeable actress in Emma Wray playing her helps a lot to. And her and Paul Bown as Malcolm have great chemistry that you can't help but root for Brenda's and Malcolm's relationship. I do think she loves Malcolm but at times you do wonder why he puts up with her. But I think that's why he loves her flaws and all. Plus Malcolm isn't always easy himself. It's basically like any real relationship, that we're all flawed really and not every relationship is perfect. Plus they had seven seasons and you have to add some drama for the couple to keep it interesting.
