    It’s definitely not Mikayla’s fault he took the loan, but it’s a huge problem that she kept promising to review it and even lied about using it. Like if she was gonna refuse to use/review it, why not just not promise too!?!? It would have been so easy to not do that.

      I disagree that it’s not her fault. She made a whole point in a video about small businesses not being able to handle the influx of orders that come from her reviews and then promised, with an actual timeline (saying that she would do it the next day) to do the review. He merely acted on her words and advice, assuming she was good to her word.

    As someone from Boston (born and raised) the iconic “Boston accent” is almost died out. The only time I hear it nowadays is when people are playing it up and it’s so annoying. I also just don’t understand her getting bullied for a Boston accent in mass to the point she had to hide it until a certain time and then all of a sudden she doesn’t care. I mean given her past that she has sold out products from her reviews and the product is proven to be good, he predicted that he would sell out and brought more for her review. The obvious reason she wasn't reviewing the product, was because she wasn't being paid, it's known she is a money hungry influencer (only cares about money) and barely reviews products without some coin involved, she always gets paid for reviews and doesn't disclose it, so do many on tiktok. Unpaid reviews are the ones I want personally... becuase the chances are they are going to be an honest review. the probable reason she doesnt do indie brands is because they dont pay so good or expect a free review... i dont trust her opinion one bit

    Tbh I get where everyone is coming from saying that it's his fault for buying the extra stock, but imagine it more this way-- prepping for a video like that is similar to prepping for an event, you have to have stock specifically for that event outside of standard stock. If suddenly the event that is planned for gets canceled or just randomly doesn't happen, that ultimately fucks over the business. I have known many businesses that have lost out due to stuff like that, esp artists.

    • @play-fool
      @play-fool 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      Exactly, I'm not really sure how it's fair to say that she's wrong for breaking a promise, but not acknowledge that part of why that's wrong is that a promise comes with planning and consequences if it's broken... The consequences for him was having spent way too much on stock. Business spending is always a risk, but that doesn't mean that a lack of ethics contributing to a loss isn't worth pointing out.

    • @chika2724
      @chika2724 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Also, among her many response videos, she's stated multiple times, in reply to others asking why she hasn't promoted small businesses lately, that she doesn't do them on the whimsy anymore because she knows her impact and that she doesn't want to overwhelm a small business with sales that they can't fulfill/aren't ready to handle.
      It was a poor decision on his part, but it goes hand-in-hand with the unspoken 'code of ethics' these influencers and businesses are supposed to practice in these scenarios.
      Mikayla continuously assuring him she'd do it, also with the impression that she'd like it, is what gave him the cue to prepare himself, and he did.
      He pounced on the decision thinking that someone as established and supposedly professional would understand the 'unspoken rules' and how valuable they are to practice when you consider the consequence for the business.

    • @zuglymonster
      @zuglymonster 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      And then when businesses DON'T have enough stock everyone gets mad at asks "why didn't they order extra when they knew so and so was reviewing them" so unfortunately it feels like small businesses can't win either way. She never should have lied to him and been honest from the beginning.

I feel like this is all drummed up to get those sales. To get the product shipped to him may still take time. It’s not like he can run up to the store and get immediate product ready to sell/ship to a customer. The quickness of the loan was a poor snap decision.

  • @olga2you
    @olga2you 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    The 10k was a logical business decision. When you are planning a marketing campaign (or any other event) you’re going to spend money to be prepared for incoming orders. You have to project an order # and then prep your manufacturer for that. Not doing that would be insane.
    When people drop out of projects/collaborations it sucks and it’s scummy imo. I was planning an event for the company I work for with an influencer and they dropped out after I had order a bunch of materials for that event. I wouldn’t say they owe me money for those materials (because they didn’t borrow money from me) but I would totally say they’re the reason I lost that money. No, they didn’t tell me to spend money on materials directly, but we were planning an event together that they knew I had to prep for.

  • @writeonshell

    I agree with you on the business decision. Plus it's not like he *lost* money - it's stock he has available for sale now. While I think what Makayla did was pretty crappy and unethical, unless they had a signed agreement it's not really her responsibility if another business makes the choice to invest in their product. Now its his job as a business owner to find other ways to market and clear the 10k of product.

    It a complicated issue because I can see he is reaponsible for the loan but in the other hand Mikayka has stated before that she is hesitant reviewing smaller brands because they don't have enough product to handle the customers she's gonna send. So we have someone who hears what she's saying, she promises to a video and they're preparing ahead. If she's aware enough to know that the traffic will wipe out a small business's products (and make a public comment) she can't be utterly shocked that a small business would prepare in advance either. I agree with you, Adam. It's common business sense to never take out a loan for something based on a verbal promise or agreement. He said himself it was a loan that came in 24 hours to his bank account. I don't think waiting one more day for the review to come out and to get the loan would've made a huge difference for distribution. I think he got excited, it's understandable as to why, but to blame taking out the loan preemptively on her is not entirely warranted in my opinion.

    I see a lot of people talking about how it's his fault for taking out the loan and blah blah blah. But no one mentions that he made a video saying he made the decision and it was 100% on him. He's providing details to the story. He never explicitly blamed Mikayla for him choosing to take out the loan. I took this more as him, letting people know how Mikayla was while also getting the exposure he was essentially promised with that review.

    I agree with you Adam. If he could have gotten the loan so fast he could have waited another day or two to see the demand if she made the video. Also, just because she was possibly going to make a video about it, a smart person wouldn't take a financial risk on something like that. He made a bad bussiness decision unfortunately

    Yes, he did make the active decision to take out that big of a loan knowing she was obviously unreliable. However, the same person also basically was giving this small business owner a chance that she wouldn't normally give others because they "cannot keep up with the demand of her fame and product recommendation" which in my opinion is a bs reason not to support small businesses. Customers ordering from small business should understand and expect that when a small business blows up, they will run out of stock but will eventually restock at some point. Its kinda common sense? I think there are more reasons to support small businesses as a creator than not honestly. And holding back from doing so obviously backfired in her face. And him taking the extra step to make more product after being given the green light from Mikayla so he would avoid running out of stock, I can see how taking out the loan would make sense in the moment to him. He felt like she owed him for promoting the brand that ripped him off and then repeatedly blowing him off. And if he was dealing with someone with positive social media influence and who was reliable, it could have been a really good business decision.

    No he shouldn’t have trusted her but it’s hard to understand the pressure and anxiety of being a small business owner right now especially in this economy. Unfortunately he let it get to him before she could make good on her word. No, she didn’t owe him but she could have said I don’t have time right now I’ll let you know when I do it. Hopefully he learned his lesson to never put trust in her again as she’s shown the public many times that she can’t be trusted.

    To me she is partially to blame for the 10k, cause she told him she was going to review it so he believed her and got ready for it. Its kinda like you and your friend decide to go on a trip, your friends says yeah I’ll pay half you go and purchase everything and then your friend bails on you and you stuck with the full amount cause you went off their word. She should have never made the promise. I’m not saying she’s fully to blame but she is partly to blame I feel cause if she would had just been truthful he wouldn’t had bought it.

      @@FabiolaRVelaI disagree with this take her review wouldn’t be for free, she still makes money of off the platforms she shares like Tiktok, Instagram and such so she would make money through that. Also her job is to review things not being a mouthpiece for the brand so I imagine her not being paid by the products she reviews is a plus for her reviews.

    Her most recent videos really blow my mind. The fact she did a video showing how much PR she gets so she obviously can't always test things right away was bitchy. It's fair to say you can't get to everything quickly but the way she said it was, in my opinion, rude. And promising to do it and then not is shady. Just say you can't do it. That's way less problematic than lying.
    She also kind of slammed Meredith, her friend, by bashing the deal Morphe supposedly offered her a while back. She just so happened to mention this right after Meredith got the exact same deal and was so excited. That to me seemed deliberate and shady because why are you just now mentioning turning down this deal the same week Meredith was celebrating hers? Great friend

    As a business owner, this is on him. He should have had a plan for when the post happened. You can get pre-approved for a loan but hold off on taking it and restart the process quickly. He didn't need 10k in stock immediately waiting for mikayla, and even if something sells out THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT. You want the demand. You want the drama. I dont like mikayla at all. Shes absolutely obnoxious in the absolute worst way. But this guy put a lot of stock in, lets face it, a promise. It wasnt a contract, it wasnt a sponsorship, he asked and she said sure. She went with the paid promotions first. Shitty? Yep.

  • @maybee3435

    Its not her fault he decided to take the loan BUT when these big reviewers do review products the products usually end up out of stock and he was just acting on her word so i dont think its fair to say that its his fault. Usually if someone says they will do something you trust that they keep their word. He had a business to run and when you expect a big order you obviously buy more. Anyway…

    I agree with you Adam, it was this person's business decision that this person choose to make and unfortunately the first time that Makayla didn't post the video that should have been the sign that she is flighty and won't follow through. • @MeeraReads

    Mad Catster said he might cover this. The law recognizes something called “promissory estoppel” where a person can be on the hook for promises if the other person reasonably relied on that promise and lost money.
    So, for example, you say “I promise to paint your house this weekend, so long as you buy the paint.” And then I go out and buy $200 worth of paint. Then the weekend arrives and you say “nah, I’ve changed my mind, I won’t do it.” Hypothetically I could take you to small claims court for the $200 I spent on the paint in reliance on your promise.
    I don’t know whether he would *win* on a promissory estoppel claim, but I believe he could bring that claim against her and it wouldn’t be frivolous
