Mike G you seem to have a modern purist mindset. It was very common in the early 20th century and prior for performers/composers to offer their own takes on other composer’s music. Liszt, Rachmaninov, Busoni, Godowsky, and many others did this extensively. Heck, even Bach did it.
that's just beautiful! I think you're just used to modern sound of pianos. (and I'd say Steinway has changed very little over the years, but since 1890 it was already this powerful beautiful piano it is today)

More studies on the already challenging enough studies from a player point of view.
Not to quibble but I feel that "conquer" was not the best wrod choice . A pianist should not be "conquering" music but flowing with it.
