  • Stuart Hinds demonstrates how he approaches treatment of these important muscles that come sometimes be difficult to reach.
    Whilst the splenius capitius and cervicis muscles are technically referred to as deep muscles of the back. these muscles run like broad bands into the neck and work both together and independently to extend the head and neck.
    It is quite common to experience active trigger points in these muscles, which can sometimes be difficult to locate and treat.
    This video includes soft tissue release technique, passive release technique, and deep stroking massage.
    Stuart is a lecturer at Victoria University, Melbourne, where he teaches Soft Tissue Techniques.
    Stuart works primarily with elite athletes and has been part of the Australian Olympic manual therapy team for over 20 years (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012).
    In 2016, Stuart received a lifetime achievement award from the Australian Association of Massage Therapy.

    Could you please do a video on how to do this to yourself, this has been giving me hell for over 2 years I haven't been able to leave my house because I cant wash my hair 😢 or do anything really

    Are these muscles along with traps involved in whiplash trauma?. Soreness including an onset of tinnitus /hissing which worsens when pressing on head and jutting jaw forward? I went over backwards in a skate park banging back of head ( helmet on).

      I have also tinnitus and neck discomfort with pain. I feel a knot in the spot of left image in 2:03 in the video when I massage the splenius capitis. I also feel that my neck is always leaning forward and also I feel pain when I tilt my head up. My neck problems started from a muscle stretch on right trap muscle.

    I live in Los Angeles and am suffering greatly from dizziness when moving my eyeballs around. I have extreme tension at the base of my skull where you are treating this patient. I suffer from anxiety and clenching as well. I am able to sort of push on it myself, and I get a few seconds of relief but it immediately comes back. I am at my wits end! I don't know the right type of person to look for around here who knows what they are doing. Is there a specific type of therapist that I need to do a search for? What exact words do I type in to find a local person who can do this sort of work professionally and knows what to look for?

    The right side is where it hurts for me. Massage helps a little, sometimes I get pain in my temples. Is there anyway to prevent pain ?

    Interesting topic, thanks! What i dont understand is that you laterally flex the head to the opposite side which stretches the splenius capitis but at the same time you rotate the head to the same side which shortens the length of the muscle. So at the passive release technique we want a muscle to be fully stretched or to be fully shortened as we work on it with our fingers?

      It's literally flexed in the opposite direction. Rotated toward the same side though.

    When I get mingrain see my splenius capitis seen yo be loose why is that they move when I put my finger on them but when my mingrain goes away they seem to be more stiff and feel better

    That just looks like passive movements of the neck
