Not sure what happened. I left a long comment, but it disappeared. Loved your video! So much great info. The sites you recommended are great as well. Favourite pigments - PV15 Smalt, PY129, PY150, PR206, PV16, all Perylenes, and W&N Transparent Orange and Aqua Green. Thanks for the great video!
Ah yes, pthalo greens, the ones that refuse to wash out of my brush bristles. Sometimes it takes me a good few minutes with the brush soap to get the pthalo greens out
You must have put a lot of work into this info-packed video. The world of pigments can be confusing and intimidating. You've presented it with a clear, concise, and engaging approach. I think this is an excellent introduction to pigments for beginning watercolorists. As an intermediate/advanced painter, I also found a whole lot of value in this. Thank you!
Amazing viedo! Haven't come accross alot of people who explained pigments so thanks alot! But I think I have to rewatch it a few times specially when I'm buying new watercolors. My favorite watercolors are New gamboge (W&N), Indigo (W&N) and Quinacridone magenta (schminke).
😮 Wow - this video was SOOOO insightful. Watercolors are fun to play with, but scare me when trying to create “serious” pieces as wall art. Knowing this info makes it a little less scary. 😇 Thanks so much for sharing!
I don’t know how you put these super informational videos together with your full time job, Doc!!❤❤❤Supergranulating paints are my fav, too many to list!!
Thank you so much for making this video. I’m new to watercolours and painting and you have answered my questions about pigments and lightfastness etc. I’m making my way through your video collection and learning so much. You energy and enthusiasm is infectious!
Thank you so much for your really useful owerview! I‘ve been getting really interested in the rather complicated topic of pigments lately and didn‘t find a lot of sources - so your video really helps a lot! 🎨🤗⭐️
That was an incredible education. Thank you so much for putting this together. You literally answered all of my questions, and now I want to go deeper down the rabbit hole. Appreciate this video very much!
Thank you so much for your lovely message! I am so glad that you found it helpful :D I initially went down a confusing rabbit hole when I started, to know that I've hopefully made it intriguing as opposed to confusing... is awesome! I hope that you are still enjoying the wonders of watercolour xx
Thank you for such a great video on a very hazy subject (for me,at least)! It took me 2 years to finally understand, that paints containing the same pigment could have different names! I thought, if it's called differently, it's different colour. 😂 But, to coin a fraze - it's not shameful not to know, it's shameful not to learn! Love your humour and enthusiasm, your haul videos are pure joy to watch, because your delight with your new goodies just jumps off the screen and feels a bit like watching a kid getting a Christmas gift, which was dreamed of since forever!
Loved this video! So much work!! I really enjoy watching / reading about pigments. I first started digging after hearing people mention light-fastness and I was intrigued by that, then some of the other properties caught my attention. I love Dr Oto Kano and Jane Blundell’s sites/channel. I need to check out Handprint by Bruce. My main interest in pigments these days is to understand how to use the information to my advantage for better mixes. As for favourite pigment? That’s a tough ask. I do enjoy granulating pigments for landscapes, so depending on what I’m painting, I might choose a granulating pigment. Too many colours to narrow down further!
Thank you so much for your clarity, thoroughness, and honesty. I'm starting to scratch the basics and really appreciate the complexity of water color's fluidity... that's why it's so challenging. Thank you.
You are so welcome! I’m really glad it was helpful James! Happy creating! If you have any questions asking the way - feel free to ask 😊 I know watercolor can feel quite complex at first 💛
Wow you have put in so much effort into this video. It is so easy to follow and understand. Your swatches are different to normal per pallete swatch witch makes it very useful. You are so knowledgeable. You should become a watercolour personal shopper for people like me and am sure many out there. Who have to adhere to certain budget to work with. You have very friendly and kind nature, are full of knowledge and you are very authentic. You give so much of your time, sharing your knowledge and trying out so much with your own money to give right information to others. Thank you. I am very grateful to you for creating this channel and am sure you will be a great personal shopper people would love to work with when it comes to watercolour. I know my friend who started being a personal shopper for clothing and accessories from just doing it with friends and family and now has built up a huge clientèle. You are awesomely amazing.
@SketchesnScrubs you are most welcome and well deserved. Totally understand,, you work and also do these elaborated informative videos. Since watching you on regular bases I have now got about 36 roman szmal watercolours. I also have rosa gallery and w&n cotman, currently using those. Once again thank you so much. I do hope to join your kofi soon.
My favourite colours (subject to change) are Schmincke's quinachridone magenta PR202, Sennelier's or White Night's raw Sienna PBr7 and W&N Antwerp blue PB27. Thank so much for all the work you invested in this highly interesting and educational video 🥰
Thank you for creating this video! I am new to watercolors and I was curious about what the names meant. Your video explained this and more. I feel more informed now when the time comes to try different brands.
Excellent information! This information, as you said, is out there to be had. But, it is so scattered, difficult to find and sometimes hard to understand! You did an incredible job of gathering all of this information in one place and presented it in a very clear, concise easy to understand manner! Thank you for all the hard work you put into this!
8:29 - I love those paints tubes and the brushes as backdrop to your swatches!! Great idea, so much so that I have just created my own little stamp of a paint tube! The brushes are supercool too, I might steal this idea too for my swatches. Thank you so much for your inspiration - and also for all that interesting info you give in this video!!
This is such a great video! It must have taken hours & hours to put together. Thank you so much! My favorite color is Cascade Green by DS PB15 & PBr7. 😍
Thanks so much for this video. I teach a Behavior of Pigments workshop every year. I like to update my info as I learn more. Your presentation was clear and informative. Can’t wait to share with my students. I will include your video link in my handout.
This was so much information! I will have a look to my schmincke watercolours soon just to see what I've learned! 🥰 And for your question, my favourite colour is London red (I hope I have the name correctly in my mind, I'll edit it if I was wrong soon) from my schmincke set! I just love how it looks for any reason. Maybe also because I just love London and England in general 😝 but it's such a beautiful and lovely colour! 😍 Edit: it's English red! Not London red. Thanks to Maddy 🙈
@@cazumbandoartmaddy1728 oh oopsi! You're totally right. It's "English red".. I just checked the package again 🙈😂 I just love how this colour looks like 😍
Excellent video! Very easy to understand I am so grateful for the pdf it's alot to remember, bless you! I was watching a tutorial the blend of colours were stunning to my eyes, I tried it and it was OK but not close to what I hoped for, so I watched the video again and she mentioned single pigments, which peeked my sudden interest, as a newbie I'm not sure which pigments are my favourites yet but the knowledge is very important. loving your hair and the blooper 🤣 hugs❤
Before this I was never interested in pigments. As long as I had my colours, I was happy, but you brought up some interesting points and made me a little bit more aware of what can and cannot harm someone. Very knowledgeable and interesting. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Keep creating 💛💙💜 (work made me miss the live 😫)
Thank you so much for making this video. I’ve had artist grade watercolors for a bout 2-3 years now but for a while I was scared to use them because I didn’t know which pigments are toxic and which are safe and around that time I developed really bad anxiety that made it difficult for me to use any art supplies (even regular graphite because I was so scared of harming my health) 😭 turns out I the only toxic colors that I have were the Holbein cerulean blue (although it doesn’t have a sticker on it and does have the AP logo) and quinacridone opera and a few colors that might cause skin sensitization. I’ve now kind of gotten over my fear of using them although I really do wish I could use cobalts but I heard the way it’s extracted is very unethical and it’s still toxic and expensive :,) do you know of any hues that are close?
Thank you for watching and your lovely words. I'm sorry to hear about your health anxiety and I am glad that things have improved. Some brands will have "cobalt hue" or "cerulean hue" which won't contain the cobalts ... they are usually phthalo blue mixed with white. Hope that helps xx
Thank you for the video I've been thinking about looking into pigments and stuff but I always get lost 😂 But you definitely helped me to understand more 💖
Hello, i just found your channel and this video is packed with information, thank you! Im fairly new to watercolor and when im watching a youtube tutorial quite often i will need a substitute for a color as the person is using one i dont have in my palette. Is there a way with the pigments that i could create a substitute and if so how would you do that. Thank you:)
Thank you Janelle! That’s a good point 😂 I never really thought of them s as a family as I only use ultramarine blue , it’s main properties are that it is a large pigment and thus tends to be granulating, easy to lift / non staining and lightfast. 💙
Great video! Does anyone know of a database that has info on toxicity in pigments that is easy to understand? I’m avoiding toxicity in my paints because of my cats but all the info the brands put out is hard to understand and some colours arent as obviously documented as toxic as, say, the cadmium’s. Also my favourite colours are the dark violet brown pr101 colours. Sometimes called caput mortuum or Indian red!😍 earth tones in general ROCK!
My favourites are cobalts, cobalt green deep, cobalt violet and cobalt turquoise, the violet isn’t very strong but love the color. I like how cool and refreshing those hues look.
I would love more videos on pigments in watercolors. I found this so helpful & it answered so many questions
