assuming you are not on a job with a labourer on continuous mixing work, what do you do with the mixer between batches?
Coincidentally I fill with water to the exact same point you showed, I then leave that running between batches so I inevitably then start the next batch with "cementitious" water - does not seem to make a huge different to the colour consistency though.
I do not clean between batches as creates far to much mess to be cleared up / disposed of

I hate people that put bricks in the mixer! Noisy and messy. So long as the mortar hasn’t been left to dry just run water in it and use a brush to clean the rim. Tip out into a wheel barrow and throw one more bucket into the mixer while on and still tipped over and it will be spotless. Just saying my mixer is spotless as I keep a bucket of water and brush around and quickly run around the rim and feet after every mix. Takes 10 seconds after each mix to keep clean. Many ways to skin a cat wasn’t trying to be negative just saying if on a small job you can’t be splashing mucky water everywhere.

Shovel is 2X faster than a bucket system, if you use half a bag of cement each time you can't miss if you can count the same amount of shovel loads each batch....and the cement bags are only half as big as when I first startd....but i will conceed that using a cup or larry pot...or a bucket for measurement when using lime or oxide, is worth the xtra time and effort.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:18 🏗️ This video is part of a four-part series on mixing mortar. This episode focuses on how to mix mortar in a mixer safely and efficiently.
01:11 🚧 The mixer used is a Bell mini mix 150, which is introduced with some wear and tear. It's essential to avoid putting hands or arms inside the mixer while it's running.
02:06 🚰 Before mixing, a bucket of water mixed with mortar plasticizer is prepared to improve workability and resistance to frost.
03:47 🏗️ The proper mix ratio for this demonstration is 5 shovel fulls of sand for every half bag of cement, with appropriate water added to achieve the right consistency.
07:30 🧱 The ideal consistency of the mortar should be a slow-rolling, fluffy texture like Mr. Whippy ice cream, with some small cracks visible when it turns on itself.
09:15 💦 Overly wet mortar should be avoided, as it becomes sloppy and challenging to work with. To correct it, small amounts of sand and cement can be added to maintain the desired color and consistency.
11:20 🧹 Cleaning the mixer can be done effectively by adding bricks or debris, along with a bit of water, and letting it run for a while before brushing it out.
12:24 📅 This video is part 1 of 4, where the other episodes will cover mixing mortar in different ways, such as in a bucket, a wheelbarrow, and by hand on the floor.

We make it wet in Australia. After all it can push up to 40 degrees in summer.

As a diy bodger I can't emphasise enough what a difference making gear of the right consistency is. Tapping bricks level on a dryish bed is virtually impossible and bricks sliding along like Torville and Dean when too wet makes you question your manhood. You know the missus had a sneaky peak while you went the bog and was thinking "time for a proper man in this house".
    THE GEAR MUST BE RIGHT!!!

Hi mate, I'm currently doing a self build. At the moment we are just out of the ground and I was wondering what ratio exactly is a lean mix for a cavity fill. I keep getting mixed messages so your recommendation will be highly appreciated.

Chipped out a few mixer barrels. Custom silicone ear plugs and a set of ear muffs made it so it liveable. Worse than fifth row at the Stones concert.

Haha you are funny. Great tutorial! Do you have one on mixing lime mortar? It is very different and can have no portland cement. It needs to be loads drier than cement. 1 lime to 3 sand only. Do you mix all the dry stuff first without water so the fine lime is evenly mixed with the course sand before the water comes in? It has to be hard to work, a bit dry and crumbly, not even as soft as dough because otherwise it shrinks too much and cracks

great mix. unfortunately in my case no matter what admixtures or ratios I use, under a 35 Celsius sun and an umbrella I am lucky to get 20 mins of good use before more alchemy is needed. A mortar retarder is my best friend.

The million dollar question is... what do you do with the shitty water from the mixer? Especially if you're working at a nice, tidy house with a nice garden.
